The airport

Watching the chaos at Manchester airport, makes me think that if Squires gate was operating, many would choose to fly from there, especially if they’re north of Manchester.

In addition, thousands of new houses have been built around the Fylde Coast and thousands more are being built. This means many more local people who fly on holiday.

Is it now viable?

Funny thing about those pictures from Manchester airport my parents had no issues Sunday and my lad who got the 6.55 train this morning has just gone through with no problems.

As to Blackpool who knows I never used it for some reason it was cheaper to get a taxi and back to Man than fly from there.

I used it quite a lot...flying to Stansted and once to Tenerife. It is only a 5 minute walk from where I live though.
….ah but how long with your bursting at the seams suitcase😁

…despite the fact we can now take a local bus( the 313) to the airport ( MIA or Ringway as we still call it) ….free on our National bus pass …and be there in less than 20 minutes the chances of us taking a flight anywhere right now is Zero….they are totally understaffed in key areas and we know people who previously worked there and were laid off who have been offered jobs but at rates( and less hours🤔) less than they were being paid pre pandemic and are simply not interested in return because of it.

as for Blackpool Airport reopening for commercial flights why not indeed.

post edit….my very first flight was from Blackpool Airport to South Shields as we went to visit the family of the lady who used to help look after us( different story but basically because my parents split up when I was very young ) .I believe the flight then went on to somewhere in Germany ..Düsseldorf perhaps. My second was from Ringway to Munich to stay with a family there to help with my German which I was due to take at O level the following year.

I went back the following Summer and stayed with them again. It was 1966 and I actually watched the World Cup final on a very small black and white tv on their house with the commentary obviously in German.I may have posted this before but the father had been a political prisoner of the Nazi‘s and was lucky not to have gone the way that Putin would no doubt do if the ** gets his way.

oh and I passed the o level but sadly have forgotten most of the words😡

Where’s Jaffa when you need him for the latest update?
What do you want to know?

A lot of work is ongoing in the back ground.

Flybe relaunch on the 15th April and we’ve asked them to look at Squires gate as a potential for new services.

A brand new airport managing director takes up his new position in the next couple of Weeks.

We've got a meeting with Scott Benton in the coming weeks so hopefully some news to follow.

Don't expect any positive outcome after meeting that tit.

Manchester airport bosses blaming the Government now for this farce because we came out of the Covid pandemic too early.

You couldn’t make it up. 🤣

So when in covid restrictions they wanted them gone so people would fly, now they are...well its too early.

Sounds a tosser to me.

Two weeks ago my wife and I arrived a full FIVE HOURS before our flight time to Barbados due to covid-19 regulations regarding our flight.
After being directed to a LFT centre (near the train station) and having to wait 40 minutes for the results we then proceded to check in. We then had to fill in another form whilst waiting to check in!
Once at the desk we had to provide the evidence of a fit to fly check, results of an independent PCR test (that cost £80 each !) plus numerous other stuff that Mrs Wizz had collated (requirements from P&O)
We then had the joy of queueing for the best part of 40 minutes to get through security (think we joined the queue at Stockport!)
Finally we got through to departures 60 minutes before our flight time.

We fly to Italy in May and I sincerely hope we don't have to go through the same rigmarole flying to Europe as we did flying to the Caribbean!!

Arrived at Changi Airport Singapore today for my 9.15am flight.

5 mins to check in, 2 mins at the border and having a brew five mins later.

Security tends to be done at every gate (unless you are at Terminal 4) - no queue when we got there and through in less than a minute.

They also have the latest scanners which allows you to leave everything in your bag.

....and the airport was heaving.

It can be done, it just needs a bit of Singapore organisation.

Although compared to some airports in Asia, Manchester is a finely run, smooth operation!!

He didn't actually say that.

He said that the recovery in passenger numbers following lifting of Covid restrictions had been quicker and greater than they had planned for. Jet2 are reporting passenger numbers greater than pre-pandemic. Industry consensus was that it would take a year or 2 for short-haul to recover to pre-pandemic levels and longer-haul of 2 to 3 years. Personally I thought that short-haul recovery would be pretty quick due to pent-up demand basically compensating for Covid nervousness.

In general standards of airports in the UK are low. Manchester however is particularly poor, the building layout in general is chaotic, passenger flows are over complicated but I've got to say I have never seen any as badly designed as the terminal 1 arrivals route to passport control. Its farcical.

But the number 1 thing that makes Manchester fail so badly and has done for years is the hand luggage and passenger screening checks. No other airport does it that way, no other airport makes such a pigs ear of the whole thing.

Whoever designed the screening and conveyor belt system at Manchester has hopefully never been given an important job since. Its incredibly labour intensive, it confuses passengers who don't use it often and the backlog and delays caused is intolerable. It must be very stressful for the staff, I am sure they have a dreadful time most days.

No wonder all the staff who got laid off due to covid didn't come back. I wouldn't go back there once I'd got out either.

As far as recruiting new staff, let's face it, it would have to be your last option.

I used it a couple of times, when working, if I had a job in Northern Ireland. It was cheaper to drive across from Yorkshire, park up and fly via the IOM than it was to fly direct from Leeds/Bradford.

So in other words he did say it and it was blamed on coming out of Covid much early earlier than expected which was exactly what I said.

I was told to arrive 3hrs before my flight, which we duly did, only to stand around waiting for the check in desk to open 2hrs before take off??

Total waste of time.... I hate Manchester airport with a vengeance, this last couple of weeks, I have been through Amsterdam, Edmonton, Calgary (all bigger busier airports than Ringway) airports, who all had no problems with security queues ???

If the Airport we had, had been used more then we would still have have it. Even at it's height it wasn't making money hnce it shut down. Why would any think opening it again would be any ddifferent.

One word ‘Contracts’

Contracts with Jet2 and Ryanair were pretty much written on the back of a fag packet basically the airlines dictated the contract not the airport owners hence the airport was losing money from the early years and never actually made any which is just ridiculous.

Let’s not forget Jet2 took the then owners of Blackpool airport (Balfour Beatty) to court over slot times and they won because of a fag packet contract it had with the owners.
