The Curse of Sixth Place

Blackpool FC are the last side to finish sixth in the Championship and gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs, achieving that feat in 2010. Since then, 12 teams have been promoted, none of whom finished sixth

Sunderland for me. They seem to be replicating our season that year. Scraping into the top 6 on the last day and the top 6 changing so many times during the last match. We clung to a 0-0 at home to Swansea and somehow made it in, largely down to Billy Davies playing his reserves in the Forest league game at home, shortly before the end of the season. These little nuances affect the whole outcome of a season, and for some reason, i think the Black Cats are heading up again. Good luck to them - great fans, very congenial outside the stadium and in the local bars etc - they deserve another crack at the big-time for sure.

That’s because we are “Fookin’ ace” at play offs and no matter the finishing position we sing the lads to victory.

Opposition teams fans just crumble.

(For proof of this statement please observe a team that is always a bridesmaid and how poor their fans are)

🤔 Now which team of prolonged stagnation could you possibly be talking about

🤣 But of course who else could it be

Eh? We hammered Swansea at home in the March and drew 1-1 with Brizzle last game.

Think it will be Middlesbrough myself.

But usually the sixth team is the form team like we were before beating Forest where the say 3rd and 4th teams are a bit down/off form missing out on automatic. Thanks Ollie for the very best trip I’ve ever been on 👍

Interesting that, means there is a false perception amongst Blackpool fans that finishing in the last place of the play-offs gives you an advantage because you're going in with momentum!

Might just be us it works for.

I think it’s a fairly level playing field this year in the Champ because neither Luton or the Boro will be thinking “we blew promotion”, they were clearly not going to get automatic 4 weeks ago.

So that leaves all 4 teams in a fairly similar place. Sunderland Coventry and Luton are all unbeaten in the last 6 per the form table. Middlesbrough have lost 2 in the last 6.

Personally I would like to see a few soft arse Premier League teams have to cope with the delights of Luton….
