Might be a bit of a long post this as I'm sat on a train

Listening to the Seasider podcast last night got me thinking this morning, so i thought i would share some thoughts based on some of the stuff i heard and read last night on the podcast and also some of the Twitter content I've seen this week

Firstly i thought the podcast was pretty decent, to be honest i don't always listen to it as it comes across a bit dull sometimes with the same blokes saying the same things week in week out, however last night was good

The Raggy speech was fantastic and summed up some of how i feel about the goings on at our club, Andy with his marketing background also made some really good points that i agree with and i urge fans who haven't listened to it to give it a whirl, i think there were less than 200 people watching it last night so not massive numbers

In the words of that tw@t from Dragons Den this is where I'm at

Firstly I'm not anti Simon Sadler, this is something that I've been accused of recently and I'm not. I was actually pleased when he bought the club and I've been supportive and critical in equal measures i think. When he first bought the club he did what i think was right in getting rid of his first manager Grayson and bringing in a fresh faced younger coach in Critchley, it was difficult for NC in the early days and his inexperience showed and it wasn't until he changed his formation and playing style that the results improved. Simon Sadler was also instrumental in this early journey by backing NC in both transfer windows with some really good loans like Ellis Simms and some key experienced players like Kenny Dougal who had been playing at a higher level. We paid money for young hungry players like Marv, Jerry and Keshi who were all key to our promotion. Promotion was very much a joint effort between the owner, board and coach, the fans played a small part as it was mainly during covid but Oxford at home and the win at Wembley were fantastic. ALL LOOKED GOOD ........

We had a feel good factor about the place as the club went into the new Championship season on a high, we made some decent signings but mainly focusing on younger players who had been at bigger clubs, Josh Bowler being the main man and what a delight he was to watch, a couple of decent loans in Ryan Wintle and Djon Sterling but if I'm being honest looking back we were still a little short in key areas. The first half of the season was good, we had some great results and away days and it really felt like the club was aligned with fans buying in to the process, the North stand and the work done by a few individuals to get that stand rocking was something really special, it was probably the most passionate home end in the country.

Then something changed in my opinion around January time, i was a poor transfer window and we looked a bit under cooked in several positions, NC also looked like he had lost his mojo a bit, it was strange as we weren't actually that far from the play off places and the season just fizzled out, losing at PNE was one of the worst performances i can remember for a long time, bizarre post match interviews form NC and club just seemed dead with very little coming from the board or owner

NC left amid some rumours about a lack of backing from the owner and we went into the new season looking miles off, poor marketing from the club at season ticket time and a ludicrous match day price point didn't help the mood. I've also never understood why the club don't do a 12 month direct debit option like other clubs do, Andy and Raggy spoke about this last night. It was a right mess from top to bottom, poor signings, a new old manager in Appleton (who the fans were never going to get behind) and a shed full of loan players it was a cluster fuck of incompetence from top to bottom. We heard very little form the owner whilst the ship was sinking and any feel good factor from the start of the season before had gone. it was like people at the club just weren't @rsed

And so it continued

Relegation was nailed on and McCarthy was probably up there with our worst ever manager and that takes some doing when you consider idiots like Carr, Clark, Hendry and Riga

We still heard very little from the owner unless of course it was the NC welcome back interview or the telling off to fans, NC was always going to divide fans just like the MA appointment its almost like its been done on purpose

This season hasn't been much better than last season and that takes some doing, boring football, poor tactics and players played out of position, losing Yates was a blow as he was the heartbeat of the club, similarly with Dougal and this January transfer window was garbage

The club is just sleep walking again and everything we as a fanbase fought for appears to be lost, the atmosphere at games is poor and some crowds have been really low we as a club have become as dull as dishwater, you only hear from the club when they want something and all this talk of fans parliaments and charters are a complete waste of everybody's time and effort except of course for the 3 FSA people who appear to run BST and their 800 members, they love all this sort of shite

We are a unique fantastic club in the party capital of the UK and when we are all united we are hard to stop, we have a fantastic passionate support that is dwindling and this malaise needs to stop NOW, even my kids aren't that bothered about going to matches, Port Vale and Burton in a week saw to that

I want to hear from Simon Sadler, i want to know what the plan is for the future, i want to know what's happening with the stand and training ground projects, I want to know how the club is going to get back to how it was 2 and a half years ago and i want to know what is going to happen with our current manager who appears to have lost his mojo again' he either needs help or sacking as the whole club is in a steady decline.

I expected better from life long fan Simon Sadler (if some cnut thinks that makes me entitled then so be it its nonsense word used by folk with zero ambition anyway)

Lets get this club back aligned and everyone moving in the same direction, it has to come from the top though

Over to you Mr Sadler

Good post Phil.
Fair and balanced.

I can’t add to it really. I want to reiterate that we need to hear from the owner though. This should be before the next game.

Very good thought out post Phil, which I am glad you didn’t do on Tuesday night 😉
Just a couple of points to add,
You missed out Megson in your list of poor managers and (I have no idea how long you have supported the club Phil) we have been in far worse positions than this where fans have left and then as soon as things improve they are back on the bandwagon spouting about having supported the club all their lives, which, to me, is the epitomy of fickleness.
As you quite rightly say if SS wants to prevent the decline and fall out of the fan base then he needs do something positive now.

Yeah i forgot Megson but Worthington was probably worse

I've been supporting the club all my life and have being going to games since i was at school so 40 years or so

Things have been worse, re election, Oystons etc but just because things were worse then doesn't by default mean we should just be happy to have a club

Great post Phil and much more well thought out and measured, unlike some when you go off on one. Although I must say I agree with most of them also. Anyone who disagrees with the feeling behind this statement, hasn’t got the welfare or ambition for the future of the club at heart.

Very good post and a good read, i get the frustration on the training ground and the stand issues but this in the main this falls down to the results, players and manager, if we were in the top 2 we wouldn't be moaning about things. I don't know what the answers are.

Yeah that's a good point it was more about the communication aspect though, we hear very little

The lack of information, and general communication is poor. I had a read of the Fleetwood board when Charlie was appointed.
From first team down there are proper, regular features on all their teams, community schemes, feel good stories, junior player spotlights etc etc.
If Fleetwood can get it right why do we continue to be so far off the market and have been for sometime .
Blackpool F.C feels a bit random and , dare I say it, half hearted at the moment .
Some have commented on the palpable lack of buzz about the place and that has become a tangible thing .
Shouldn't be like this . During a transitional spell upbeat communication , intent of purpose etc is all the more vital . Get and keep the fan base on board .

Yep can't argue with any of that

All easy stuff to sort as well, believe it or not i would like to know how the under 16's got on or even the under 13s

good post Phil and agree with everything you said. It really is terrible how the club have taken a great opportunity on the back of getting rid of the stains and somehow managed to fck it up. No body expects us to be in the Premier League - we do expect to be told what is happening, a team that at least looks like it cares and a Manager who knows how to change things when his plan A fails. What Simon does now is how he will be judged.

Your post sums up the feelings of most of us Phil. I think there’s a diary card that comes out every 12/18 months to give an update on the (non) progress of the training ground - just lip service. And why we don’t have a monthly direct debit for season tickets is beyond me (other than the fact that the club will need a credit licence if they haven’t got one already, but easy to fix if they haven’t).

It drives me mad that in recent times we’ve turned to old faces for managers when other clubs seem capable of unearthing young, hungry and talented coaches. And Simon Sadler being persuaded or offering a long contract to somebody who, as you correctly say, had lost his drive/mojo here is barmy. It is beginning to show again that his enthusiasm is waning and that is rubbing off on the players. Offering that length contract to anyone is barmy anyway unless they’re the calibre of Klopp or Gardiola, which Critchley clearly isn’t.

We have some cracking young players who we seem frightened of trying out in the 3rd Division, farming them out and taking on other clubs’ development players instead, who also don’t get a game here?

There’s much to change and your post sums up most of it Phil.

That's the worry

If for whatever reason he feels he cant or doesn't want to own our club and state what his ambition is - he should come out and say that. I don't expect him to spend loads of his money if that's not what he wants to do, but many (including me) saw him as somebody who wanted to match the fans ambition for this club. That has not materialised and more and more are losing faith. I have a spare season ticket I bought for the odd occasion my wife wants to come - I cant give that seat away most weeks. There is a very depressing sad familiar feel about our club and to some extent our town - this slow decline and starvation of ambition and vision. In my 50 odd years of watching the Pool only Holloway actually ever backed us to get promotion. Why cant we at least give it a go and I am not advocating spending millions either. We are a unique colourful and fun town - we need clever marketing, good management and an engaged fan base - that's all we had from Olly and look where that took us! It all starts with Simon being honest and talking to us - tell us what he wants and what we can do.

Yeah that's a good point it was more about the communication aspect though, we hear very little
I fully get that point and do we have a right to know the answer is probably yes but will we probably not, but as they say knowledge is power., and what we don't know doesn't hurt us

Very good post and a good read, i get the frustration on the training ground and the stand issues but this in the main this falls down to the results, players and manager, if we were in the top 2 we wouldn't be moaning about things. I don't know what the answers are.
Great Post

Sensible, balanced, realistic o/p. 2 points to add: 1) SS appointed NC last summer when we had no board and no senior football experience at the club. Thought that was madness at the time 2) Am sure SS now feels stuck. I believe there’s no way he want us to decline/stagnate, will want to change things but with frequent change of manager and senior staff (only 8 months ago Jonty and McGhee were to run the non playing side and both now left, new CEO etc) are we in danger of becoming a club in constant swirl? I think admitting we have some problems would help everyone including SS

Does SS get to see these excellent comments though ? Does he frequent this site to know what is being queried and asked for ?

When he first bought the club he did what i think was right in getting rid of Grayson and bringing in a fresh faced younger coach in Critchley, it was difficult for NC in the early days and his inexperience showed and it wasn't until he changed his formation and playing style that the results improved.

Lets get this club back aligned and everyone moving in the same direction it has to come from the top though

Over to you Mr Sadler
Excellent post. I am sometimes critical of your negative knee jerk posts, but credit where it's due. A good well put together summary of the cracks in the clubs' current make up and issues that need addressing. You need more train journeys perhaps 😆

Top post, and echoed by quite a few on this forum Phil

Probably your best post ever on here.

A lot of great points, the difference between now and pre January 2022 is shocking; Sadler would type up regular messages for the fans and send through the clubs channels, giving us updates on projects or telling us how proud he was to be running the club, etc which was great communication. He even did a sofa talk as well.

It certainly seems like he’s more reluctant to engage with fans and i think that’s likely because there is more pushback regarding last season’s catastrophe. He knows he fucked up something really positive and is more reluctant to engage because of it.

He seems very content and prepared to only do what is comfortable for him (like re appointing Critchley) which is not what we need right now. Fans need to see some fresh direction.

I wish he would realize that he does more harm than help in not engaging with us.

He’s a fan just like us we understand he’s fallible and not perfect, but radio silence more times than not will only make people more skeptical and unsupportive.

These problems are really fixable too, he just needs to grow a pair and do it.

The Ollie mentality was just brilliant, this club was the perfect fit for this club and town and he managed to deal with Karl better than any manager had before, but in the end the vermin’s greed and unwillingness to support Ollie after all he had done for the club was, not surprisingly, nough to make him leave.

That is why I have no idea why Sadler has chosen all these boring, no hope managers when employing Ollie when he first arrived would have been a master stroke. I,’ll get laughed at for this but if Sadler sacked Critchley next week and put Ollie in as manager I would be so happy. He wouldn’t accept “little old Blackpool” he’d want them back in the EPL and even if it didn’t work it would be a lot more fun than the past 5 years.

Hard to disagree with anything you’ve said there @Phil_bfc deux

Disagreed with many of your points re Critchley before, but his time is sadly up.

Summed up the state of the club perfectly though.

That must have been some train journey!

Really good read. The crying shame is all the good work done early days of SS's stewardship seems to have been lost and wasted. No momentum in the club or at least that's how it seems.

Of course we all wouldn't be so pissed off if we were playing well and still involved but even that wouldnt mask the general malaise you describe.

Simon Grayson was brought in by Simon Sadler. Just saying.

I,’ll get laughed at for this but if Sadler sacked Critchley next week and put Ollie in as manager I would be so happy
No you wouldn't Herts, I miss the 'Ollie Years' massively and often reflect what the atmosphere at both home and away matches were like. It was probably my favourite era watching the Pool (we've had some real dross years), and Id have him back tomorrow.

Even if it was a disaster, you can bet your life it would be fun and a massive improvement on what Critchley is serving up.

Great post Phil, I need to catch up on the podcast tonight, but Raggy said some excellent stuff when we potted that fellar from Coventry about the mentality at the club and it’s obviously coming from above.

I’m not sure what’s happened with Sadler but the mojo has seemingly gone. Whether that’s because he’s putting in 5m a year and getting a load of pressure and struggling to sort managerial appointments or because he’s just realised he can’t be arsed?

The red flags started when he fell for Straiters “is this a 6 pointer” and told us all Callum Connolly scored a goal! When we had no right back… add into the mix his best mate Brett calling it a day and the school headmasters letters and the recruitment agency doing data analysis on our next head coach… a football coach?

The club has spent a lot of money on an infrastructure with recruitment, CEO’s and god knows what else but it was depressing to see that go compare on the League 1 table from 5 years ago… he’s trusted people as it appears he doesn’t know football too well and they’ve flopped on their arse.

I think some of these characters don’t understand the town or the club, it’s a crucial thing to grasp. You have to understand what the fanbase endured to build a proper connection.

The thing is, I don’t think they are bothered about it.

It’s all controlled & robotic. Just like the gaffers tactics.

I agree Phil. I’ve been critical of communication for a very long time now and it really is easily fixed. There’s non-league clubs doing it better with volunteers working one afternoon a week !

The problems deffiniteky lie throughout the club at this time but there’s nothing seemingly so severe it couldn’t be dealt with.

It’s the multitude of little problems which give the impresssion of death by a million cuts though.

Great Post, agreed with pretty much all of that.

Maybe the decline from January 2022 is my fault as I returned from living in Essex after 22 years, and bought a half season ticket in the January. I should have stayed away 😂

We've not always seen eye-to-eye but I can't really argue with any of that and feel very much the same. Sadler will keep the club safe but I'm not seeing someone who will really push the club forward, it's afloat and drifting along and not much more than that. We need to see tangible progress on the TG and East Stand. We also need to see that fast paced, attacking football we were promised. Maybe SS needs to give NC a gentle reminder.

Your paragraph about the podcast is probably how the players feel when listening to Critchley and the Yes Men!!

Agree with everything that is said by Phil on this occasion. Something is wrong right now and it's hard to put my finger on exactly what it is. I also think that the communications from the club are awful at times, another Blackpool fan, Ryan Powell, has been blocked on Twitter today for criticising the club. I know most don't care about that, but to alot of us, that's not a good look. Especially when it's one of our most vocal fans that has a decent following. I dont know of another club that is blocking fans on a public platform for voicing their opinions.

Sometimes I feel like the club needs overhauling from top to bottom. One thing is for sure, our marketing team isn't great and our social media team isn't either. Look at Fleetwood social media team last season compared to ours, they were miles better. They mugged ours off on several occasions and we had no come back. It was embarrassing. Like I said before, I know alot won't care about that, but in todays age, social media is huge and when used right it can be free advertising to a huge audience, especially the younger generation. We didn't even push the Forest home game untill the day of the game. Its not good enough.

I saw that Powell has been blocked. I dont care what anyone on here says, that's a bad bad look for the club. It's already starting to get some traction on Twitter with fans of other clubs commenting how wrong it is. The club don't help themselves, if they don't want to see what he's saying, then just mute him. That way he gets to say what he wants but the club don't see it. It stinks of a social media team that don't have a clue what they're doing.
