The Gazette....Again

When I open Chrome in the morning it always comes up with a string of stories that it thinks will interest me. In among them is usually one of the Blackpool Gazette's selection of photographs from down the years. This morning's offering was entitled 'Blackpool in 1950'. One of the photographs showed maintenance work being undertaken, prior to the holiday season, on one of the switchback rides. Two side by side tracks were clear on the descent section being worked on. So, obviously it was the Grand National. Not according to the Gazette caption, however, which stated that work was being carried out on the Big Dipper at a section called Becher's Brook.

Another picture showed an aerial view of four military aircraft parked at (what was then) BAC Warton. The name of one I don't recall but regarding the other three the caption stated (correctly) that they were: the Jaguar fighter bomber (entered service c.1972), the Strikemaster trainer and the Lightning fighter (entered service c. 1960).

Always good to see the lengths the Gazette goes to in sourcing accurate information.

Thanks. I seem to have earlier memories of it because it used to be tested out of Warton and came over Blackpool regularly.

A mate of mine worked on the Jaguar aircraft programme at BAES all his working life from leaving school to when he retired last year, that’s commitment!
