The Hotel Quarantine Plans

Boris Johnson is tomorrow expected to sign off plans at a meeting of the government’s coronavirus operations committee in an effort to stop the import of variants from abroad.

Believe it will only be for those countries with evidence of the variants of concern

Well better late than never I suppose - and it begs the question how do we know that the new variants aren't spreading within the countries where we are still letting people in

It is also being reported hat it will take up to three weeks to implement ! Difficult to see why exactly - main reason given seems to be lack of hotel beds

It is estimated to cost those entering the UK more than £1,000.

You are going to have to really want / need to come here to do that aren't you.

Or of course you might divert en route - though I am assuming they will have that base covered 🤔

It’s shameful tbh.

South African variant.
Brazilian variant.
Now it turns out even the Kent variant came from USA - predated by 6 weeks minimum.

Even more galling when you see countries like Australia doing it properly, with the minimum of fuss.

Somehow we actually expected people arriving into the U.K. to self isolate if they displayed symptoms. That’s after potentially passing the virus onto dozens of people on the flight, staff, security, taxi drivers / train passengers, supermarkets, etc, within 12hrs. That’s not to mention the asymptomatic cases.

Have you just invented history here. The Chinese tried this and got dog’s abuse from 20’s. He’ll be on your case before you know it if you can’t back this up with some kind of proof

I tend to agree with shandy on this.
Problems are as follows;
  • we don't truly know where any particular strain originated from only where it was first detected en mass, so we may target some but not all of the infected places
  • Individual travellers can find ways to get around bans from specific countries by stopping elsewhere en-route
  • Specific country bans only make a real impact if all other countries that our borders are open to adopt the same ones
If we want to do this sort of thing then we really have to close our borders to everything. But we cannot do this because we are reliant on trade to function normally.

In short, I don't think that we can realistically stop a virulant or vaccine resistant strain from getting here without taking very drastic measures. We may be able to slow things down a bit but ultimately it is futile.

True TAM but you could have say dual Nationals coming back for very good reasons e.g. a funeral so the government need to address how this will be handled in terms of the 10 day quarantine period.
The short answer is going to be you can't I suspect

We are talking about high risk countries

I noticed that Priti Patel was very scathing in The House today regarding those people who have gone out to sunnier climes and are showing off. l assume she meant 'The Instagram and Social Media Influencers' (whatever that means) who have headed off to the middle East and adorn the newspapers everyday. I bet she hopes she can catch these on the way back in and put them in quarantine for 10 days, how on earth will they survive🤔

Seems to be some non entity showing up every day from somewhere sunny. They'll be able to afford the hotel anyway. Stop them coming back at all and stop their internet access. We'll all be better for it.

I thought maybe Stanley Johnson was at it again and she was referring to him.

What has been happening for several weeks is that people coming from the “banned” countries are going via any European city. There have been NO checks at UK airports as to where the incoming passengers have come from.

Another Boris fuckup in the making.

The variants are in every country now so unless they stop and quarantine every incoming traveler it’s another waste of time.

Most people who are traveling are coming back to work in the UK, no one in their right mind would come on holiday would they? 😳
