The magic formula?

Sometimes in football you can stumble on the magic formula, in terms of personnel and tactics, and I think that happened for us against Fleetwood. I think it may have been the first time Carey and Dembele have played together and I think we can all agree that it definitely worked a treat. Lavery also has to start and Morgan is making a case for himself. We were superb in that second half and I think we must continue with that formation and team selection...

Carey and Dembele played against Derby👍🏻
Yes, you are right. Checking back at the stats they played 74 mins together before Dembele got subbed straight after providing the assist to Dougall's goal to get us back in the game at 1-2. There were two differences between the Derby and Fleetwood games in terms of system and personnel. It looks like we played versus Derby a 3-4-3 system with both Carey and Dembele part of a front three. The formation against Fleetwood in the second half looked to be 3-5-2, with both Dembele and Carey playing back in midfield with Lavery and Rhodes up top. Another big difference between Derby and Fleetwood was the personnel. Casey, Connolly, Dale and Norburn all started against Derby, but weren't in our second half starting eleven versus Fleetwood. So I guess in summary Critch's preferred 3-5-2 formation may well suit both Carey and Dembele with them both playing in midfield 👍.

There is no magic formula. Pick your best players in their natural position.

Football is a very simple game. Don’t over complicate it trying to be clever

Picking your best players in their natural positions is not a long terms strategy.... Essentially what that does is commit you to an ongoing cycle of the tail wagging the dog.

As I've said in other threads, it might be an appropriate way forward if you're 3/4 through the season and just need to turn the results around to avoid relegation... A kind of 'needs must' approach, but it's a really really bad strategy to adopt over the longer term. Essentially it's an approach that may deliver immediate success, but it's a success that is built on weak foundations (sand).

It's far better to have a clear vision and strategy as to how you want to play football and either coach the players you have to be competent within that system or (if need be) to swap players in and out in order to find the right players to fit the system. This way, the recruitment team can have a clear strategy that fits with the first team strategy and we can bring in the right kind of players, instead of just randomly buying players and then trying to cobble together a system that suits whatever players you might have randomly purchased at any given time.

Similarly, it enables you to ensure that the same strategy is consistent through the youth and development set up, so as to ensure that players coming through the ranks are able to fit seamlessly into the first team.

As fans we need to get over ourselves and get over the past a little bit and learn to have a bit of patience and understanding about what it actually takes to build a successful football club. Just take our foot off the gas and stop over-reacting about w few short term blips in performances or whether or not we best ** Fleetwood and try and understand the bigger picture....

That said, it might also be helpful of the Club could communicate better and give fans that kind of insight.... "Yes of course our objective is to get promoted as soon as possible, but we’re not going to compromise on the way we want to play....Therefore right now, building a Team / Club around a specific style of Football is Priority No 1"

You can't play both Dembele and Carey as attacking midfielders though.
One has to sit in more and personally I can't see either of them able to do it🤷

Maybe we can , but we would definitely need 2 holding midfielders, to cover them, Norburn & Dougall?

That would probably call for a 442 formation with Carey and Dembele playing as wingers 😳

Or a 433/ 42112 with Carey playing infront of Norburn/ Dougall, with Dembele playing just behind Rhodes/a.n.other 🤔

Critchleys stubbornness will see him using neither formation
