The Home Office, answering criticism that regulations to strip people of Citizenship instantly, retrospectively and in secret were slipped into a Bill:


The Home Office said: “British citizenship is a privilege, not a right. Deprivation of citizenship on conducive grounds is rightly reserved for those who pose a threat to the UK or whose conduct involves very high harm. The nationality and borders bill will amend the law so citizenship can be deprived where it is not practicable to give notice, for example if there is no way of communicating with the person.”


Even the US has condemned this. If you are British, you are British. Many people would have sympathy with removing citizenship from those convicted of Terrorist Offences, who have been given British Citizenship, but this Bill will allow it to be removed for someone born and bred in the UK, with roots going back centuries.

This means you and me if the Government wants rid of us, and as it can be applied retrospectively, no right of appeal.

It depends on the circumstances for me…. If for example an individual has dual citizenship (and that could mean they have been born in the U.K. but elected to also adopt citizenship based upon heritage OR that they have settled down n the U.K.) and they posed a serious risk to security then I could accept citizenship being revoked.

What the OP omits to mention is that these powers have existed since 2002/2006 and these "new powers" are in fact 20 years old.

Was just looking into it - it seems that you can make someone stateless by removing citizenship, in fact the UK government have already done this with Shamina Begum, who is now stateless and challenging the decision in the courts.
 
This is awesome and way overdue. Time to start by taking all those not born and bred British and that have committed a crime or on the terrorist watch list rounded up and fecked off. We need to get tough on these scumbags and send out the message that if you think you can come here to rob, rape or abuse children you’re out of here. Would have preferred the death penalty but the wokey mob would be in meltdown.

Your points are perfectly reasonable, however, you fail to see it might apply to YOU if the Government wished. Just to clarify, this is new legislation, not existing powers

Allied to the ongoing campaign from the government to mute the national broadcaster of any opinion or criticism of their policies, I see Andrew Marr is leaving now after railing against the new 'no opinion' mandate for their journalists and presenters.

AFAIK in that case she was considered to be a dual-national although Bangladesh are disputing that.

The power to render a person stateless only applies in very limited circumstances:

it is possible to deprive a person of British citizenship and make him or her stateless if three conditions are met:
  • he or she acquired citizenship by naturalisation
  • the higher test of conduct “seriously prejudicial to the vital interests of the United Kingdom, any of the Islands, or any British overseas territory”
  • the Secretary of State has “reasonable grounds” for thinking that the person can acquire citizenship of another country

In her case she acquired citizenship by birth thus these powers are not available.


I should mention in passing that in this case this is not a decision I support.

That article was dated August 2018, this was in Parliament this week.
 
I suspect this is mainly Patel trying to act tough at a time when the government is getting a lot of criticism about the immigrants crossing the channel.

She’s basically trying to “out Farage” Farage and avoid the Tory electoral base being eaten away from the right as has happened before.

Why don't we do the same to British citizens who have committed crime as well?

We could just put them all on an island, or Fleetwood.
