The world (of football) gone completely mad

Real Madrid offer £189m for Mbappe to PSG, they don't accept so Real set to sign him on a free in about 10 months time.

Firstly, the fact that any club can turn down that amount in that situation and be fine with it is just insane. Secondly, the fact Real Madrid were willing to offer it when the player is out of contract in less than a year is also insane. No wonder they wanted a closed shop super league.

My first thought as well. Remember when that little sack of shit Perez was talking about how the ESL was needed to "save football" because "expenses have gotten out of control"? He thinks football = Real Madrid. Incredible that the team who was talking about the entire sport dying under the weight of ridiculous spending is then going out and putting in a bid like this.

Exactly what I thought about Perez. It sounded like he was desperate for funds due to their debt position and then they do this without a hint of shame. It's like these clubs and the people who run them are completely and utterly detached from reality.

Puts Mbappe in a good place financially although I'm pretty sure he isn't struggling now!

I touched on this subject the other day as I think these sort of bids and United signing Varane for c.£50 million (other examples are available) when he had just twelve months left to run on his contract has, potentially, impacted on us this summer.

It was clear last summer that we had a model whereby we targeted players with twelve months left to run on their contracts and signed them up for reasonable fees; Hamilton for c.£100K and Yates for c.£200K being two good examples.

However, this summer, that market has become far more expensive - and I think it's filtered down from the top. A good example would be Crewe holding out for £1 million for Owen Dale.

It'll be interesting to see if this is a permanent change and, if so, how we adjust our model.

Regarding a model, then the example of Bowler released by Everton is a good example of what can be achieved. Mid to lower Prem. Obvious skill set. Bags of talent. Out of favour with boss for whatever reason. Where wages aren’t an issue.

That’s where I’d be looking for the creative midfielder we need. Not paying way over the odds for an unproven LG1 player.

Agree it could have had a trickle down effect. However, I'm not sure it's a sustainable change at our level though. Can a league one club afford to continually turn down seven figure fees for their players when they don't have much time left on their contracts? I don't think they can, not if they want to improve as a club. Possibly if they have a very rich benefactor, but even if that were the case they will end up with either some very unhappy players, or they'll end up being unable to get players to sign for them without a pretty modest release clause in the contract.
I think we're seeing clubs hold out for more because a) they think we will go that extra mile in order to stay up and b) the TV money in the championship, along with sponsorship, is significantly more than we got last season. I think we're seeing the result of our promotion in what clubs are charging us for their players. As i've said in other threads, Owen Dale and Cameron Brannagan will be wondering what if tonight.

Yeah, but we got a little bit lucky there to be honest (and I think there'll come a point where Championship sides suss him out unless he improves his end product, but that's another story) as if Everton had offered him a new deal they'd have been entitled to compensation as he's under 23. And given they signed him for £1 million or so upfront, it'd have been a decent whack!
