There's nobody to pass to

Noticed a few times yesterday that the defence had the ball and passed it around a bit then tried to bring it forward but nobody was making runs for them.
The midfield were static and the defenders were forced to hoof it long and surrender possession.
Are the midfielders so lacking in confidence that they just don't want the ball?

Yeah should be playing Patino at least he wants the ball

That’s been half of the problem all season. No meaningful centre midfielder who can can control the game.

Lack of pace adds to this. Just watch the footy highlights show and see how many goals other teams score from pacy wing attacks and simple whipped in balls.

We are too slow and deliberate due to lack of options

Yes. We have no plan with the ball.. hence our awful possession stats. We seem to be content with this way of playing

Their first came from this. We were doing these neat little passing triangles at the back which is all very well and good the problem is when the ball found the CDM who was dropping deep, usually Carey, there was no pivot to turn and go forward, always going backwards. Incredibly easy to press because it's so predictable, you know the ball is going back towards a fullback and now the sideline is an extra body when you're pressing. Nobody had any courage to turn and bring the ball forward, or hit a diagonal ball to the wingers, who often had a bit of space especially on the left. I think they all just fear a cockup, hitting the ball out of play or getting intercepted, which is what would likely happen since they lack the quality. But if you aren't even going to try you might as well just play full-time hoofball

He does want the ball but once he’s on it almost immediately gives back possession to the opposition or gives a pass back to the defence who then find themselves under more pressure from pressing attackers.

He’s been rubbish for months. Loads of potential but the confidence has been knocked out of him and he’s gone massively backwards under MA and now MM.

The problem he's had is that is hasn't had anyone suitable next to him

Dougall and Carey are awful he needs a Bridcutt or a Stewart with him as he's only a young lad

Why so surprised?
It's been like that most of the season ☹️

Completely agree. Could never fathom why Appleton constantly played Carey and Patino together - the midfield was shockingly lightweight every single time.

Trybull getting injured looks a massive blow to the slim chances of staying up. Connolly getting a run in midfield looks like our only hope for the rest of season - but going off yesterdays result the sticking plasters and plan D’s, E’s and F’s are simply not enough.

Whatever’s gone on with training, at Squires Gate or in the physios room this season must have something to do with it and it’s killed us. There’s no way this many hamstring injuries is just bad luck.

Connolly played out of position and isn't great with the ball and Carey is like the invisible man for the majority of games, it's no surprise that we aren't zipping the ball around with purpose.

We were saying the same yesterday, how our 'wide' men were much narrower than their's, both atracking and defending, so when they got the ball, they had a man on them straight away.

By contrast, Reading had wingers hugging the touchline, and when the ball was played to them, our narrow defenders had to go 15 yards to try and close them down. In that time, the ball is under control, the player has had a look round and knows what he's going to do.

Don’t think the hamstring injuries are all down to training at Squires Gate, I was chatting to a Rovers fan yesterday, who told me they also have loads of players out with hamstring injuries, so I think it must be down to the World Cup break & so many games in a shorter time period.

I always have the feeling that when a Blackpool player receives the ball, that's when they start thinking about the next pass. Oh, I've got it...what should I do with it...? There never seems to be any forward thinking and no movement, no forward planning, no idea where other players are, but because there's so little movement it is easy for the opposition to cut down the options. Other teams pass it around quickly and the Blackpool press is often beaten with a few quick passes. Whenever Blackpool get pressed it invariably goes back to Maxwell to hoof it long.
