Therese Coffey

To be fair, John Prescott and especially Cyril Smith got plenty of stick.

I think the point was she's Health Secretary. Practice what you preach, and all that.
Prescott was in good shape, see knock out punch, as for Cyril smith, that dirtbag was 5 times his body weight ffs.

I wonder if those who mock her because of her figure, mocked John Prescot as a minister, or the shamed Cyril Smith. A lot of people are not thin due to their genes, and will never be. Being overweight is not an excuse to mock someone, or is it because she's a woman?

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
I’m not mocking her, I’m overweight, I’m just saying that surely she’s got the wrong job, she’s responsible for the health of the nation and will no doubt have to try to get people to stop smoking and eat healthily.. if she was business Secretary or Home Secretary it would be different, but imo you really should have a role model in that position, if they’re to be credible.

I'm still trying to picture someone making a lifestyle choice based on the health of a cabinet minister and I just can't. Do you think they put the health secretary on billboards telling people to exercise? They get cartoons or celebs. 90% of the country won't even know who she is.

Blimey, only 10% of the country take any interest in politics

There's a difference between voting and being aware of the cost of living crisis and being able to name every cabinet minister. You're not aware of the problem of mass disengagement in politics these days? 90% is hyperbole but there are plenty of cabinet ministers with name recognition below 30%.

Again, do you seriously think there is anyone in the country tonight who was going to go for a run and eat a salad but has seen Therese Coffey and has decided on eating a takeaway and sitting on the sofa instead? It's a ridiculous idea. Jeremy Hunt wasn't on adverts telling us to lose weight and eat vegetables, it was a cartoon family. They don't put politicians at the front of campaigns, they try to make them non political. That's kind of the point of public health?

You are missing the point. Coffey will drive the agenda and when these campaigns are announced people will point to her. The Tories have made an error appointing her, a PR nightmare.

So ok, the Tories announce a policy that they are going to subsidise gym memberships for the lowest income bracket to encourage them to sign up, worried that the cost of living crisis means they can't afford to go. Just a made up policy off the top of my head. The health secretary not being in good shape matters how exactly?

The fact that Coffey is the fifth Health Secretary in four years is more of a concern than her waistline. Little wonder the UK health system is in such a poor state.
Beyond incompetent.
Correct. Health, Education, Environment. Three hugely important roles that have been treated as a semi-irrelevant stepping stone by all political parties for as long as I can remember. Come in, do something damaging, move on. At least we have the spectacle to look forward to of Thick Liz securing her photo-op in a tank in Ukraine 👍

The Tories and subsidies you must be joking.

This is the kind of campaigning I am referring to: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...ls-six-major-health-benefits-to-losing-weight

And as if to prove my point the name of the Health Minister is nowhere to be found on that document
Read again, you'll find Public Health Minister's Maggie Throup quotes in there. This is before we look at how civils servants working under Coffey will react at her appointment in that department.

You have to admit Coffey's appointment is just another example of MP's being put in random positions like a merry-go-round. Akin to asking a teacher to suddenly start working as a doctor. This is jobs for mates not jobs for the most suitable person.

But not the actual health minister, the position Therese Coffey currently holds. And if any civil servant finds they cannot perform their duty because of who is in charge, they should resign or be kicked out. That's the point of being a civil servant.

Your second point is entirely correct, and has nothing to do with her physical appearance. There's no 'have to admit' anything for me. They are revolving shower of shite. Doesn't mean her being overweight has any impact on her role whatsoever.

Look, I expect the minister of health to be in good shape and looking healthy themselves. Not some fat ** that likes smoking and a Tory to boot. End of.

Lead by example.

Not my cup of tea, boom boom, but it's a valid issue if she's going to be speaking with authority on matters like how obesity cripples the NHS

Have you found yourself exercising less since she took over from Steve Barclay?
