They don’t mess about in Aus

Spot on for me.

Australia has banned any foreigner from entering the country for the next 12 months.

Had we done similar in the early stages of the outbreak instead of fannying around maybe just maybe we would be out of it by now? And most certainly we wouldn’t have the Delta variant.

Australia shut its borders on 20 March, for us to have achieved a similar outcome would've required similar actions back in January, even 20 February would almost certainly have been far to late to have a material effect on the course of the epidemic.

The above of course doesn't take into account differences in goods and cargo transport patterns that make border restrictions harder to impose in the UK.

Finally, I think the point of this thread is that Australia aren't "out of it", they're stuck in perpetual lockdown because they have little to no immunity to the virus and thus any outbreak could spread quickly.

My son lives in Sydney, spoke to him today and they’re locked down for two weeks, shops, travel, the lot. Leave home for essential reasons only

If they're lucky maybe we can start shipping them some of our spare vaccine doses fairly soon, otherwise they're stuck in this situation on and off for the next year or so.

As a first world country they'll not be relying on charitable vaccine donations.

4% fully vaccinated if you're interested, slightly ahead of India, as opposed to 47% in the UK (or 61% if you just look at adults), at the current rate of progress they might catch up with us at some point in 2024, maybe 2025.

In this case being "a first world country" appears to be worth the square root of f*** all.

There has been and still is, less urgency because they closed their borders and had no infections.

We've had to ramp up vaccinations because we've had none of that. The vaccine is our only option.

Heard the Delta variant caused 100% infections among households when 1 was infected, the earlier strains were 40% so they need to get a move on on vaccination
