This isn’t a new Neil Critchley thing (long post)

This was a classic Neil Critchley away team performance. The kind we’ve seen before, even in his successful spell 1st time with us in the Championship v Birmingham, Derby, Preston etc. & all too familiar this season. Concede a goal, wait till 70 minutes, make like for like subs, dare to change the shape last 5. Huff and puff and have a couple of half chances.

Blackpool 0.

Lincoln, Wycombe, Burton, Port Vale, Cheltenham, Orient and now Wigan. He loves it when teams come at us. It’s why we did so well in the Championship against some good teams away and why we did well with 10 men against Portsmouth. That’s his excellence in coaching to be fair. Solid base and able to counter-attack. The issue is in this league we need to be able to break teams down in about 80% of the matches as we’re better than them. It’s also quite difficult to counter attack quickly with Rhodes and Beesley upfront and no actual desire to look like you want to do it with the formation and the players at your disposal.

This isn’t a new Neil Critchley thing as alluded to above against the Championship teams who sat deep against us (just for the record I’m refusing to use the phrase “low block”). Derby away was as horrific as it gets with their young team they had out and Knobbers just as bad.

We know he's been working on possession and transitions and all nice coaching things all season and we’ll now have two weeks to do more of it but there's no intensity or focus to WIN. We could have got in a play-off spot yesterday… it looked like a bounce game or whatever shite words they now use for a friendly.

The team yesterday was going through the motions like it's a training session and they're going to get graded at the end with how they carried it out and get asked what they learned. Like a non-competitive sports day.

What we get is a weak as piss performance conceding the first goal thus meaning they can then sit in and we’ll be completely and utterly clueless on how to break them down. We got slightly better 2nd half but nowhere near where we want to be. I only listened to a bit of the NC interview as it’s same old but he got a bit chopsy telling the in-club guy that you have to understand Wigan are involved in low scoring games… which made me question what the plan was for if they scored 1st or was it just hope they don’t? If you know that’s what they do then go for it FFS.

He wants to play HIS way. Which is fine as I’m all for an identity but not so good when you’re wanting one of the best kick it, head it, block it and tackle it defender’s in the League to become John Stones on the ball. (Marv will 100% move on in the summer). Couple this with your spare man being the right centre half to step out with the ball and create things? Which I’m not sure he’ll have signed up but at least it means Husband wasn’t getting blamed this week for it and his long diagonals. Then you’ve got a left footed wing back who was brought in to provide balance and width always cutting inside or playing the ball backwards. Is that instruction, safe play or an inability to keep the width and get at your man? The thing with this is, whoever we put in positions all seem to do the same thing. For Carey see Weir. For Dale see Coulson. It can’t be the players all the time it has to be the coaching and instruction because if it was the former they’d be told not to do it. The team minus Dembele and Byers has zero personality and expression on the ball. It’s boring as hell, side to side, backwards, pass and probe. There’s very little driving forward with the ball Infact the only time we did yesterday Lavery nearly scored.

That’s what creates space in a game of football. Taking a risk offensively in the last third. We have a massive reliance on Dembele but he’s now being clocked on his ability and shackled and won’t always be fully at it. When that’s stopped we’re screwed.

We’re taking risks in our defensive third by trying to pass and create pretty patterns which usually result in a long punt forward after we’ve made about 10 passes.

Pointless possession without a purpose.

This might be HIS way but we’ve lost 13 games.

I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere soon, I don’t even know if I think getting rid would be the right call as it’s who we’d get in, but it’s a worrying summer ahead as we’re going to lose our best 3 players from their loans, Rhodes, Dembele and Byers & have to recruit for and rebuild the starting 11 with as many as 5-6 players when you think loans and players who’ll go.

Marv will be off, i think a Championship team will pick off Gabriel to play him as an actual right back and If anyone has faith in the rebuild after we’ve spent half the season not picking our next best players in Casey and Gabriel, ‘allegedly’ signed the most expensive player in the League last summer in Kyle Joseph to then not start him regularly and give CJ fooking Hamilton a 2.5 year extension after a couple of half decent games then I have a Nigerian Uncle that would like to speak to you regarding some family inheritance you are owed.

One thing is for certain, the club are going to have to be very cute and clever with their season ticket pricing and marketing, as another season in League 1 alongside this brand of football isn’t going to everyone buzzing for it for sure. I’ll be there no doubts, but watching central midfielders look forwards and have next to no option bar to go sidewards or backwards due to the shape of the team is going to be a bit of a slog.

The maddest thing is, our Head Coach will no doubts be happy with it.

Football is / can be a very complicated game, especially at the highest level. Reading between the lines and taking on board some of NC’s comments, he views each game as a huge challenge and a game of chess.

Yesterday he had almost mentally written off the possibility of us being able to score more than a single goal against Wigan.,At times there’s almost an air of ‘autism’ about his thought processes. I did wonder yesterday if that may have played a part as it felt like we had visibly decided the game was over when they scored and played out the remainder of the game like nicking a 1-1 Draw was going to be enough (or as much as was possible).

I think also, that the ‘over-complication’ and the attempt to maybe be too clever, actually results in a fairly one dimensional style of play and neither the players or Critchley seem to know quite what to do to change that when it happens.

We’re too far in (too far down the road) to make and major changes this season, but we probably need a bit of a rethink for next.

Agree with this 💯 and also think it’s stifling players in game.

I think that’s fair… The challenge really is how you provide the solidity and resilience and also give some freedom to the players to think for themselves.

Under Appleton, I think we maybe went too far. To a point where we became like a leaky bucket.

As things stand though KD is Critchley’s only fairly ‘caged’ indulgence and if (as Wigan probably did) our opponents can do a job on him, we’ve no penetration. In some ways that’s why Rhodes was a big blow yesterday, because it gives our opponents two players to worry about.

Its hard to believe that just over two years ago in the Championship we beat Bristol City 3-1 at home playing 442 with Callum Connolly and Kenny Dougall in the middle!

What's happened Neil?

Absolutely spot on

Yes, I agree with this.

There's an element of him thinking 'but this *should* be working' - i.e. 'but I've run the model in my head and this will be the outcome'

To be honest, there's been times when he's persevered with something that seems misguided and it has worked really well in the end (Ellis Simms as one example) but this year it's not felt that it's worked that way so often.

Good post

Good OP and comments on this thread. The worry is next season, without Dembele and Rhodes, and probably Marv and possibly Gabriel, we’ll have a very very ordinary workman like team with the same tactics. That would set the club back for a good few seasons.

Decent post that x3 tbf but football doesn’t need to be as complicated as NC seems to make it. Those players yesterday simply weren’t enjoying the football and it’s clear they are not allowed to express themselves with the obvious talent they have, probably because it’s being coached out of them. The amount of times l saw Norburn, Byers and Pennington in particular looking for the pass backwards when in possession was unbelievable and the pace we play and pass at is almost pedestrian like and ends up with a hoof upfront but your right, it’s too late to change the system now but if this underwhelming and boring football carries on then the club need to accept the inevitable fans reaction. As I’ve said on other threads, that performance has put possibly hundreds of fans not now prepared to spend their hard earned cash going to Derby.

Totally flatters to deceive.

Too many people give him the 'great Coach' respect, to which since leaving Liverpool...why?

The only success he has had was when he had experienced No2's like Calderwood and McCall.

That is one big understatement BFCx3
It’s not really though is it? Whilst I can understand people being frustrated (I am myself) with our lack of consistency away from home, I don’t think the tantrums and OTT reactions are called for.

Arguably we are already a pretty decent side. We have a solid Home record and therefore we have something to build upon.

Crithchley is a stats and analytics coach, he isn't an emotional or person coach and Sadler is exactly the same in his role. Sadly that will only work so far, without passion and personality it is always going to fail. The only way to get us back on track is to get rid of Critchley and let the recruitment team choose the next manager and not let Sadler anywhere near it.

How do you know all this?

Have you met either? Spoken to either ?

I’ve rarely heard Critchley mention ‘stats’ in any of his interviews and I can’t say I get the impression that he or SS are any more driven by Stats than any other professional football Club (I.e. they are a tool we employ, but we’re not driven by them)

Critchley strikes me as being extremely passionate and he’s someone who really doesn’t enjoy losing at all… he seems fiercely competitive.

He’s no more or less of a ‘personality’ than most coaches or managers. He’s not as colourful as a Holloway (who is?) and he’s not as dull as an Appleton / Grayson).

He has said it quite a few times and he is more stubborn and arrogant than competitive. As for personalities I'd put him well below Appleton and Grayson, he's the dullest bloke to have ever managed us. I think stats play a massive part in our club now. Why the constant gazing at their iPads all game long? He's dull Daz, Sadler is dull too, the place used to be poisonous under the stench of the vermin, it's now painted battleship grey with the whiff of eyes fluid everywhere. What happened to the Tangerine?

I think that’s fair… The challenge really is how you provide the solidity and resilience and also give some freedom to the players to think for themselves.

Under Appleton, I think we maybe went too far. To a point where we became like a leaky bucket.

As things stand though KD is Critchley’s only fairly ‘caged’ indulgence and if (as Wigan probably did) our opponents can do a job on him, we’ve no penetration. In some ways that’s why Rhodes was a big blow yesterday, because it gives our opponents two players to worry about.
I think he tolerates Dembele because he's shorter than him and he pretends to listen to him. It's a Napoleon thing 👍

‘The constant gazing at their IPads’

Again based on what exactly? You watch the game on TV, which rarely cuts to the bench… You’ve just made that up like the rest of your post.

And how do you know the mythical IPads are recording just stats. What about replays, monitoring individual performances, verifying physical factors, communication, watching replays etc…

You’ve essentially just invented a character and persona for both NC and SS and neither are remotely accurate.

and he’s not as dull as an Appleton / Grayson).
Now you are pushing it.

You do however make quite a few structured, sensible points which I take on board, but its obvious you are on the Critch side of the fence with some of them.

The Ollie years were special and unfortunately a lot of my fellow posters feel the same. We probably will never reach those days again. However there are far better Managers out there ( many posters repeatedly mentioning that fact), and I have yet to be convinced with anything that Critchley does.

With this squad, we should be dominating some or most teams, and it rarely happens due to his negativity and frankly awful tactics.

I shudder to think that this Manager was chosen by a feckin algorithm than by football common sense.....it shows.

Pointless possession without a purpose.

Spot on AK.
I've said before that it is pointless and slow, so by the time you think about going forward the more organised teams (dross we can't beat away) have reset their positions and we can't break them down. It's possession that doesn't turn or stretch the opposition.

When you set out playing like that it must be difficult to up your game.

I’m on the common sense and rational thinking side of the fence. At this point in our Club’s lifecycle, we’re not in a position either Financially or Practically to be sacking off managers who are (in the grand scheme of things) doing reasonably well.

You’ve highlighted part of the problem.. Too many of us are too consumed with a brief period in our history, which may never be repeated… And that means that very little of what we see from any new coach / manager can live up to that past experience.

Your assessment of our performances and tactics is completely OTT and it’s unfair. Similarly the silly and pretty childish and reactionary posts that call for the Manager to be sacked after every defeat (regardless of what has preceded). I don’t know how old you are, but I’m guessing your old enough not to react like a child who’s been told he can’t have a new dummy?

There’s plenty of reasons for optimism and there’s absolutely no reason whatsoever that we can’t improve for next season and challenge for a promotion place under this current manager.

Ive been a passionate fan of the Pool for 63 years and also played for them.

My reactions are based on what I have experienced over those years as both fan and professional...certainly not knee jerk, reactionary or whatever posters who don't agree allude to.

With Critchley at the helm, Im definitely not optimistic and certainly don't think the general consensus of dire performances away (and some at home), are OTT.

Critchley is much too intransigent with his ideas and implementation to evolve into a successful Manager.

😂

You’re clearly pretty unhinged then … Though that’s also been evident in many of your responses to other matters…. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be on the end of your form of ‘retribution’ / justice when you were patrolling the streets in your police costume.. and that’s a fact 😲

It remains to be seen whether or not Critchley can reproduce the kind of form that a) Saw us promoted and b) has seen us beat many of the better Teams in this League, on a more consistent basis. If he does, then we’re onto a winner.

SS won’t accept mediocrity for long and so if we remain inconsistent and fail to make progress we will almost certainly be looking to make changes.

It’s not going to happen now though and nor should it. So the childish and reactionary outbursts are just daft.

Its hard to believe that just over two years ago in the Championship we beat Bristol City 3-1 at home playing 442 with Callum Connolly and Kenny Dougall in the middle!

What's happened Neil?

What a 3rd goal too, Dougall with an absolute quality pass to Bowler who turned the defender inside out and finished beautifully.

Pointless possession without a purpose.
In fairness, there are a lot of football managers who play this way now and probably because the reverse seems to be pointless hoofing up the pitch and losing possession. Whilst you have the ball the opposition don't have it and there is some reason in that.
