WW1 had been going a year and cutbacks were part of life. We played our part by choosing something cheap on colour dye, common and very plain.

Decent enough reply, but any post-war ‘cutbacks’, didn't stop the likes of Burnley and Morecambe getting colourful kits. 🤔IMG_3250.jpeg
 
Very few, if any, teams back in the day wore white socks as the dyes available around WW1 to colour & subsequently wash woollen socks were notorious for ‘running’ into other colours & ruining other kit in the wash.

Red dyes were especially susceptible to this, hence why teams such as Manchester United sport seemingly ‘illogical’ black socks in their kit to this day.
