Tim Paine steps down as Ozzy skipper!!!

Moving away from racism and on to athletics.

Did you used to drink ginseng tea and then move on to steroids after you retired from competition like your hero did ?

I am perhaps a bit older - and much better looking - than your goodself but in my youth my athletics hero was Lord Sebastian Coe.

More than 40 years since he smashed the 800m world record and only 2 athletes have beaten his time since and still less than a second quicker than him.

How quick would the great man have been if he'd decided to dabble in the Persians ?
I like Coe as well, got it pretty tough in the press as the 'posh boy' (which he wasn't by any stretch) against the 'working class hero' of Ovett (which he also wasn't in any way).

No it wasn't, black face in the 21st century are the actions of a knobhead, even if his Tupac excuse is more than a flimsy attempt to deflect did he actually think Tupac would have approved, did he listen to any of his lyrics?

'I know the best way to celebrate my hero, a man who's lyrics (while guilty of misogyny and casual violence) spoke of racism and the need for people to work together, I'll dress up as Al ** Jolson, it's everything he stood for...'
Was it not Graeme" Swanee" who dressed up as Al Jolson

At the time, I didn't go that deep and just loved Coe's running style.

Now that I am older and bitter and twisted, I'd probably have hated both the feckers.

At the time I wasn't thinking about too much but I used to love the summer nights when most weeks Sportsnight would go over live to Oslo or somewhere like that and you'd have a little stadium full of Skandies clapping as Coe or Ovett went after the world record.

Now I never watch athletics but appreciate it more that the best middle distance runner in the world got there by chasing his old man's jam jar up hills in Sheffield and not because he had the best gear.

I don't know whether it's true or not - it could easily be a why let the truth get in the way of a good story tale - but I've read that Coe went for a quick 13 mile run on Christmas morning before returning home and enjoying his Christmas dinner in the afternoon, later in the day he was thinking to himself that Ovett would still be out training so he got changed and put another quick 5 or 6 miles in.

Sorry for reminiscing but they were far better times for me.

This general topic has revealed some good stuff these last few days. We've had the defence of the word 'paki' because it's 'just an abbreviation' and now we have the idea that blacking up is OK as long as you're not racist with it...Can I check if we've had the old 'what's wrong with me saying the N word. Rappers do it' point yet?

And all because Tim Paine sent a photo of his middle wicket to someone who replied relentlessly to his textrotica before deciding she was horrified with it after all...

I don't think you'd hate them, they both come across really well in interviews these days about each other.

I HATE SEBASTIAN COE

It could have been a tribute to Al Johnson, the American R & B singer, writer, arranger and producer*

*(c) Wikipedia.
But it wasn't, was it? Layton knows it. I know it. Every fucker in the world knows it, but for one smartass with little more to occupy his time than to Google Al Johnson * when his time would be better spent watching old episodes of The Day Today at the taxpayer's expense.

I didn't watch enough The Day Today episodes, this is what I've taken from the entire racism debate, and Bifster doesn't think it's real...

I'm sure they do and to be honest, I don't have any strong opinion about either of them as they are these days.

At the time, I loved Coe but I certainly didn't hate Ovett.

"We've had the defence of the word 'paki' because it's 'just an abbreviation'"

I don't think anybody said that the P word was just an abbreviation, I think what actually happened is that some posters explained that the P word could be used as an abbreviation in some cases and also a racial slur.

Posters who explained this did so in a polite and appropriate manner.

I'd be interested to know which poster(s) said that the P word was 'just an abbreviation'.

Are we allowed to call him an Aussie? Good job he’s not an Abo,

Good point Layton.

I would like to apologise for using the term "Skandies" on this thread yesterday.

I am sorry to all those offended and while there was no excuse for the use of such an inappropriate term, I hope folk consider that yesterday afternoon was a different time and that I am now a different and better person.

OK...

Editing to add that your reply to OL’s post demonstrates the point. We all know that there’s nothing remotely offensive or inherently nasty about the term ‘scandie’, ‘aussie’ or many others. Whereas the term paki has been used as an overtly racist term for years. You’d have to live under a rock to not know that. Trying to suggest it means something else in this day and age smacks of trying to justify something against the obvious criticism that it gets.

And in the relevant debates, I’ve stated my view that there’s varying context to a lot of these cases that are being discussed - Vaughan’s comments for example - and it’s not always as simple as ‘it’s racist’. But defending that view with statements around the ‘right’ usage of certain words isn’t helpful.

Thank you for your reply but it doesn't change anything, the P word can be used as an abbreviation or as a racial slur.

So we agree that nobody stated that the term was 'just an abbreviation' ?

People have clearly used the argument that the abbreviation has a meaning around the homeland of a specific group of people. If you want to be pedant around the semantics of my phrasing that’s up to you. 👍🏻

Okey doke Straighters, it could be said that you were the one being pedantic in failing to accept that the term can be used appropriately and inappropriately, which was all I was suggesting.

I have no problem with you, I didn't think your phrasing was the best but yes, we are now discussing very little.

In this instance, I don’t believe the term can be used ‘appropriately’ because it long since stopped being used in that way and is clearly associated with racial slurs. As a similar - and genuinely true - example, the nan of an ex once went shopping in Nottingham city centre and was asking the sales assistants at shops if they had a ‘nigger brown cardigan’. This was 20 years ago and even though she was racist (proven in many other conversations) in this case there was no nasty intent to her words. Fast forward 20 years, would you seriously try to defend someone saying it now, because ‘it’s what we call the colour’?

I have no problem with you.

I don't use the P word - I've not mentioned the N word - myself but I consider it perfectly acceptable for somebody to say, "If we beat the P***'s on Wednesday, we'll qualify for the Super 8s", I also consider it unacceptable for somebody to say, "The trouble with this country is that there are too many P***'s".

That's it really, I agree with many of the points that you have added but my original point is that there was nobody who suggested that the P word was 'just an abbreviation".

No big deal, I didn't think your wording was the best and apologies if you feel that I was being overly pedantic in questioning you.

We see it differently. That’s the nature of the world.

I don't like him, one because he's Australian
As someone who has been here for 55 years, most Australians are very good laid back people who are in most part, good salts of the earth.

Don't let any famous Aussie wankers cloud your judgement, as they don't represent your average Aussie.

I hope Pat Cummins takes his place because he is quite the clean skin, and has been talked up about the captaincy since Steve "Sandpaper" Smith decided to have a brain meltdown.

It’s more a joke mate. Met loads of Aussies and every single one is ace.
