'Time added on'

Bloody ridiculous. 10 effing minutes one match, plus what they had at half-time.
At least 2 matches I watched finished up with well over 100 minutes play.
Where did it come from?

I actually think it is good , should be like this all the time , in rugby the clock is stopped when play has stopped.
I think there is a statistic that shows on average the ball is in play for only 70 min approx each football match in The Premiership .

Completely agree with what FIFA are doing. Not often anyone says that.

I am fed up of paying to watch games where the ball is in play for less than 60 minutes. So much time wasting at throw ins corners goal kicks.

Incidentally in a EPL game a few years back between Stoke (what a surprise) and Watford the ball was in play for less than 42 minutes.

Sorry Dave, but the refs are only adding on the proper amount of extra time. We have become used to seeing '4 minutes' at the end of the 90 whatever the true total of non-playing time. This gives the leading side the incentive to waste time knowing it's not going to be added. It's a bit of a shock to see 12 or 15 minutes but it's the correct way to go.

Good idea would like to see more keepers being booked for wasting time.Red card for a repeat offence. The tactic of collecting a shot or cross then needlessly dropping to the floor hugging the ball needs punishing. Also any player prone on the floor behind the free kick wall to be booked for ungentlemanly conduct.

I would like to see VAR used to assess playacting, that way anyone feigning injury can receive a yellow card or a red card if they are trying to con the ref in the penalty box. it would soon stop them diving on the floor all the time.

Tange, it's pathetic, every time they go down they roll about 4/5 times. Then as soon as they get a free-kick (or not) they're up on their feet and running like a hare.
Agree with giving them a card.

100% agree

He is simply expressing an opinion, which most people have disagreed with without making it personal.
No problem. Next time I disagree with his opinion, I'll agree with him so as not to offend him.

He thinks something is ridiculous, so do I. We are both entitled to say so. We have.

Read your post again.
'However, not unusual'.
That surely is aimed at me?

*seasider 1953,
A stop watch was used to clock every time play stopped for ANY reason ( throw in, free kicks, corners, subs, fouls, goals, injuries etc….) and the result showed that the ball was in play for 59 mins.

There are plenty of polite people on here.
You're not one of them.
I agree, there are plenty of polite people on here. There are also many impolite ones so I look forward to you telling them how 'nasty' they are. You could be a busy person.

Credit to FIFA on this one. Sick of just watching 55-60 minutes of ball in play. A step in the right direction, may it long continue.
Aussie rules football play four quarters of 20 min each plus time added on (by two official timekeepers) when the ball is not in play. Usually end up with playing over 90/100 mins.

Would it work if we followed the rugby model?

Just stop the clock when the ball is out of play.
I’m broadly in favour of some version of that. The amount of time wasting has got ridiculous.

Stop the clock for substitutions, physios dealing with injuries, corners, restarts after a goal (too much prolonged celebrating) & VAR delays.
Free kicks are a bit trickier. They’re sometimes taken quickly, but with anything near the goal it can often be over a minute before the ball is in play again.

Suspending time for the ball being out of play can be subjective – the ref can be slow to acknowledge the lino’s flag when the ball crosses a line.

Referees still should have discretion over time wasting at goal kicks and throw ins, and be more ready to book players.

Reading some of the better replies on here, I've decided that the 'extra time' is definitely the right way to go.
At least it stops the time wasting efforts of some players.

Well done you. It's not exactly rocket science is it and is the common sense approach rather than allowing the ridiculous time-wasting tactics employed by some that can spoil it for so many.
