Time to let go

William and Kate’s visit to the Caribbean and Belize in particular, highlights the colonial past and whether it’s appropriate today. For me, I think the queen and the government should offer independence if they want it. What right have we to have any authority in another country.

It’s already an independent country….the Queen is simply, through a governor general a technical figurehead but like Barbados if they choose to opt to become a republic then nobody is exactly going to get in their way are they and many of these former colonies are more than happy to retain the link.

None of it seems to make sense in todays world. Why would a country on the other side of the world want to have another country’s Queen?

Come to think of it, it does feel a bit strange that any country wants a Queen in these modern times.

It’s basically saying I want an elected government that represents and manages the country and I also want one chosen family to have a special royal status and be seen to rule over us because they did hundreds of years ago.

Do these countries see some benefit in being in the Commonwealth maybe? Not sure why they would or wouldn’t to be honest?

I believe the Republic of Ireland would benefit from being in the Commonwealth. I will email the Tishok Val Doonican tomorrow about this cracking idea as no doubt at present he is snoring in his rocking chair.
