Just finished his biography.
Was he a gentleman? - he certainly was.
Was he a skillful player? - he certainly was.
Was he a goalscorer? - he certainly was.
But he wasn’t a leader. He wasn’t a winner. He wasn’t the type of player that drives his team onto success and to winning silverware. I guess that’s why he has no team honours, but he has a relegation with Preston on his CV.

Obviously a legend of the game and hopefully the knobbers can move on once they’ve got tonight’s 100th Birthday memorial over and done with.

We should never forget these great players of course, but there comes a point where it’s time to focus on moving forward.

In one way it might be fitting for the Derby to have fallen on this date, in another respect I can’t help think it casts a bit of a subduing shadow over the game.

To be fair, I think they were relegated the season after he retired.

Ok , I'll say it . Tom Finney could play right wing , he could play left wing , he could play centre forward . He could create goals , he could score goals , he could tackle , and he could head the ball . He was born and bred in Preston, and played for them all his career . So , in my honest opinion he was a superior player to our Stanley ,who was a wizard of dribble , a right winger and creator of goals . But that was it . And , in all fairness , really a Stokie .

Great player, crap plumber - that statue outside their ground has been pissing water since the day he built it.

(I’m happy to show him respect today of all days, he was an English legend from an era in which we had one or two, too. We’re classy enough to give the man his due, then spoil their party on the pitch).

As a Preston fan , i can clearly understand your dislike of the rival club but you cant discount the level of brilliance shown by Tom Finney . I dont know any Preston fans who don't acknowledge the player Matthews was.
I don’t think any of us would be disrespectful about Tom F or any other comparable great. Certainly not our older brigade.
I’ll apologise for the third poster. He is NOT a Blackpool supporter.
