Tony Weston - Rangers

According to The Athletic he's set to sign for Rangers.

"Rangers are set to complete the signing of 16-year-old Blackpool striker Tony Weston, The Athletic understands.

The deal is set to be made official in the next 24 hours, with the fee thought to be in the region of £250,000.

Weston had been attracting interest for several months from Leeds and Southampton but the pull of Steven Gerrard has helped convince him that Rangers is the right place for him to progress."

I've only seen the lad run around for a few minutes when he came on so hard to judge. £250k will go towards a decent new player.

What’s happened to the club is great , new shirt , new signings ect ect
Sadler done great , can’t argue with this
BUT
letting a young Blackpool lad go ,not sure I agree with this , why ,
why not loan him in league two ,see what he can do , my opinion thou

We should keep him (if we can) and sell him the new BFC dream that he should be a part of. That’s all. Bit peed off if we let him go. Would be like the Oyston bad old days all over again.

Because nobody can stop him from leaving.
It's the easiest money the club will ever make. Nowhere near first team ready either.

16 years old... quarter of a million... sell on clause... in times of financial uncertainty... no brainer.

Might have had no choice like Puma says.
At least we look like we are going to start producing good young talent again.

The silly new rules mean we can’t offer him a pro contract until a certain age, meaning he’s free to go wherever he wants (I think).

Doubt we had much of a choice, but at least 250k is decent

all it is with me is , he is a Blackpool product , rather him stay with us and go out on loan
let’s hope he does well and pool can get him back in couple years time
yes it is a sum of money

We've made a quarter of a million on a kid (remind me where Waddington and Telford are now?) and loaned out a lad who couldn't get near our team last year...it's hardly Oyston-level disaster PR is it.
It's not a disaster no. But if we want to be developing players for the first team you'd like to keep hold of the sort of 16 year old players clubs like Rangers, Southampton etc are willing to pay £250k to take from you. Suggests he could be worth a fair bit more later down the line. Unfortunately it's not to be.

Put another way, the money for Weston plus the alleged sell on for Osayi-Samuel probably covers our whole transfer business for the summer, or close to it. It's a no brainer for me, given how young he is and the fact that he probably isn't knocking on the door of the first team.

You have to ask yourself, in an environment as uncertain as the current one, how on earth Rangers can justify a gamble like this.

Given their revenue I would imagine 250k probably isn’t a massive gamble.

It seems crazy that a 16 yr old can sign a pro contract in Scotland but has to be 17 in England. I think Weston is being badly advised he will be a long way from home and it's very easy for a young lad to disappear without trace in a big club like Rangers.

If the rule to have a home grown player on the bench continues , he would have been a useful option to fill that role. Is Jack Sims the likely junior bench warmer now? I`m also not sure if those youngsters we signed from Fulham, MKD and Salford will qualify for such a role ?

Providing we have a health sell on clause then I can understand this one if his head was turned before we had a chance to sign him up to a proper contract what really were our options😞 the club needs to progress or we will never be able to retain anyone of any real quality.

Is he going to play for BFC in the next 2 seasons? I'd suggest not at all. When I last saw him he was incredibly lightweight...even by 16 year old standards.

He could turn out to be a world beater but statistically what % of promising young lads make it to the Prem (in England)? Players these days have an agent from the age of about 12.

All these people trying to slag off the club for letting him go... he isn’t on a professional contract so we literally cannot keep him if he wants to leave. 250k is a good bit of business and will go towards another good signing.

Can't blame the kid for wanting to give it a shot at a big club. If he's a scouser Gerrard could very well be his idol.
And if it doesnt work out for him up there, he's an ex Rangers player, that alone will pretty much guarantee him a follow on contract somewhere.
He could have chosen to stay here, then got injured or not progress and be left with nothing.

Seems like a win for him and the same for us if we also get a sell on fee.

I've written about Tony before and I'm not going to add anything. I might find out more when the U/18 season starts. Most of the salient points have come out on the thread already. Most importantly he's only 16 yrs old. We can't offer him a professional contract until he's 17 although I'm pretty sure we will have told him what will be on offer. Rangers can offer him a contract now. I don't know if he's a red or a blue so I don't know if Stevie is a factor.
As for Tony the footballer it's been my pleasure watching him. He's had a cracking couple of seasons playing 2 years above his age group. He isn't there because he's the big lad, he's where he is because he's a good footballer. More David Silva than Adi Akinfenwi.
BUT, and there always is a but, maybe he's shone because he's playing at Academy level 3. Level 1 and 2 are way ahead currently of BFC.
I really hope he's made the right decision, I didn't see him making the 1st team this season at Pool and not sure he will at Rangers. I'm sure he'll get excellent coaching but bottom line, if I was his Dad, I'd have said stay (but his Dad probably isnt a Sandgrown'un)
Final point I do think £250k is reasonsble compensation.

Dominic Telford could be playing against us this season. He is at Plymouth I believe

Not the best of days as mentioned above, Hardie should have been given another chance really surprised Critchley just let him go without giving him a chance, and letting Weston go doesn’t sound good business at all on our part we should be looking at keeping our youth players especially those with potential (which he obviously has) £250k is just peanuts considering what he could have been worth in say 2-3 years time. 🙁

If both players weren't happy here then I don't think either the Manager or the Board has much alternative.
For the record though I would have liked to see them both stay.

WE DIDNT LET WESTON GO! He opted to sign for Rangers, BFC had no choice in the matter.

Disappointing but inevitable. He probably thought he would stsnd more of a chance of game time at Rangers rather than going on the books of a championship or PL club.
Just waiting for the signings or loans from the championship or PL to temper the disappointment 😉

Its feck all the bad old days of the O's lets be honest

Obviously he was showing signs of doing well at 16......and not wanting to sound bitter.....but for every Wayne Rooney.....There's always a Freddy Adu.
And we are talking about Rangers.....The same Rangers who signed Charlie Adam at 17, loaned him out and then sold him to us for a fraction of his worth because the manager didn't rate him.
In the future, if Gerrard leaves or Weston doesn't fit into the new managers style of play....it's all musical chairs once again.

Take that £250k.....improve Blackpools 1st team squad and who knows, we could be producing 2 or 3 Westons every season by continuing to invest in youth.....at least this £250k will go back to the club and not a new car or holiday home in Spain....

Bearing in mind the effort that BFC have put in over the last couple of weeks with youth team recruitment it will be interesting to compare the quality of the two 17 year old we have brought in on professional contracts with what we lost with the departure Tony Weston.
I will share my views if watching youth football is allowed.

Red or blue, Gerrard is someone any kid from Liverpool will look up to.
