Train back from Sheffield

We are driving to Sheffield on Saturday and stopping over but we are giving my lad a lift and he is getting the train back. What is his best plan to get back for a reasonable price. Thanks in advance.

Won't someone like BSA or Tory Corner's bus have a spare seat?

Its all very confusing, buying a ticket to manchester then a seperate one on to Blackpool is less than half the price!!

Its a long time since I inter-railed so advice may be sketchy.
1. Check time tables (Sheffield to Blackpool) - There is thus t'interweb that does all that for you now.
2. Find friends at the sporting event in Sheffield - I suspect by chance that friends will be there and might be doing a car trip back to your son's leaving point.
3. Befriend 'topbrass'
4. Assuming he is 18, leave the hapless soul to sort it out himself.

Thanks for replies. He is out now but will get him to download trainline app when he gets in

17.45 departs Sheffield station
(18.37 change at Manchester Piccadilly).
20.09 arrives Poulton station

Currently £21 on the Train app...Reduced from £35.90. Limited tickets available

just hope the train does not get cancelled because northern rail like to leave passengers up shit creek.

Trainline sorts out the best split ticket price for you 👍

Use the trainline, by all means to check the ticket prices and where to split the tickets, but never buy from them. They are the railway equivalent of ticketmaster. They charge a fee and some of their prices are misleading.
It's better to book direct with Northern, Transpennine or East Midlands Trains. There's no fee for buying the ticket and if things go wrong it's easier to get a resolution with them.

If you want to get someone to book a split ticket, do it with TrainSplit.com where the price is £14.30 (Dep Sheffield 18:14 - Advance ticket to Manchester £6.30; Dep Manchester 20:00 - Advance ticket £8.00). You don't need to though, you can book those tickets yourself to avoid a fee.

We split our train tickets. Sheffield to Manchester: then Manc to Bpool N. Saved quite a bit. 18.11 from Sheffield. The 17.45 was quite a bit dearer....when I booked.

We’ve done split tickets as well. Leaving Sheffield at 20.14, back to Poulton 23.06 was about £13.50, I think it was about £6 to Manchester Piccadilly then £7.50 to PLF

Return worked out at £27, but we get a couple of hours in Manchester before getting the Sheffield train

I use red spotted hanky Cheapest I've found. £10 with Railcard Shipley to Sheffield return. Cheaper than northern rail.
