Train strikes on Saturday

The latest round of industrial action on the railways is under way.

Members of the train drivers’ union, Aslef, are refusing to work overtime at LNER and Northern on Thursday 29 February and Saturday 2 March. Northern has warned passengers to “expect disruption”. Dozens of LNER trains on the East Coast main line have been cancelled or curtailed “due to industrial action”.

On Friday 1 March train drivers will walk out at both train operators – cancelling all Northern trains and most LNER services.

You don’t need strikes to make travelling by train a trial.

My suggested route to Shrewsbury on Saturday (thanks to engineering works) involves heading West from Hampshire into Wales (Newport) and then North to Shrewsbury.

I will give that (and the game) a miss

Yet still, the union bosses spout the lie that they don't wish to inconvenience the general public.

We football fans must be classed as something else!

I managed to travel to Bradford and back yesterday (Thurs) but no trains are running today.

I'm not passing comment on the drivers but someone from the Rail operator said they have turned down a basic £65k for a four day week? That seems like a lot.

Every time you go to work, do you have 500 people sat behind you with their lives in your hands?

They are drivers with every safety system available, at their fingertips. They are holding businesses and the public to ransom and expect movie star wages whilst basically being public sector workers being paid as private sector workers with gold plated pensions in an industry that loses millions every year.
The railways are a joke as are these greedy drivers.

If you've ever been self employed you will understand.

That is untrue, lots of misinformation being put out in the media unfortunately.

The railways are privatised. Did you miss that.

Absolutely spot on 👍

If you think that the government isn't subsidising the railways massively to the tune of 100s of millions then god help us.
I know they are because it's a completely shite mishmash where it needs taking over so we see some of the profits. As it is, the subsidies go to overseas shareholders.

ASLEF has always been problematic.
First they demanded retaining a fireman on mainline trains when steam was phased out.
They then wanted 2 crew drivers and danger money when HST trains( 125 mph) were introduced.
Had to wait 3 years before ran and they were idle for this time.
