Transport secretary resignation.

A strange thing to lie about, and if not a lie initially, then a strange thing not to be honest about when taken in for questioning 🤷‍♀️
But people do strange things for reasons we may never know.
She did declare the offence/discharge though when in opposition, so whose cock up is it.

The Tory papers are really going all out to dig up any dirt and previous misdemeanours in the Labour government.
This one is strange one - she got a discharge so guilty but no punishment - bizarre what she did. Starmer also knew about it, so all not helping the current government.
They all live on a different planet to us regarding what they do and how they get into their roles.

Agreed why say no comment if it was a genuine mistake that counts against you in court.

Serves Labour right they didn't have to say they'd be whiter than white and stop the sleaze of British politics,Tory's where in such dissaray they'd have won the election anyway.

I blame Nigel Farage for all this surely it’s all his fault and if it’s not he still deserves to be blamed.

It's a bit of a non-story - if we take her account at face value did she actually do anything wrong?
She perhaps should have told the police under interview that she had subsequently found the phone but apart from that?
Anyway, she has done the right thing in resigning quickly rather than prolong the inevitable.
I think the government will survive this one somehow.

I saw pictures of her last night, looking like a rag doll.

It would appear with her choice and the Deputy PM's choice of suitable attire, that reasonable clothing for Parliamentarians has gone out of the window.

Or maybe it's me getting old, cranky and not keeping up with the present ways of dressing to look modern.

As a youngster who had a Beatle Hair cut, which then turned into a Rolling stone type, before my Dad and an Uncle frog marched me to a hairdresser for a short back and sides, I can understand, in some ways, that these people want to be suave and keep up with the times, but standards in certain areas of life should be maintained.

Puts tin helmet on and retires to the bomb shelter,

I blame Nigel Farage for all this.
lol. I think Nige has his own version of this going on from what I read. One of his own party Candidates at the election actually went to jail for battering crap out of his girlfriend.
(Great vetting)

We’ve got some beauts in our parliament

Look at the state of her!

I’d like our next Transport Secretary to dress and style themselves in a manner appropriate for the office that they hold rather than looking like they’re about to appear on Stars in Their Eyes.

Louise: “Tonight Keir, I’m going to be Cyndi Lauper.”

Keir: “Ooh Louise, I know that girls do just want to have fun but you’ve been a bit naughty and will have to go but before you do, make sure that those ASLEF member’s get plenty of time off over Christmas - that’ll teach the public for calling us out.”

Non story???😂

Obviously ‘non’ enough to resign from Cabinet at 6.15 in the morning.

Hypocrites - if this was a Tory Minister you’d be on it like a rash.

It was F.R.A.U.D

If this was a Tory minister it wouldn't really have bothered you would it?
Of course it would, I’m not a Tory and I have morals. All sleaze and corruption in Politics is abhorrent.
However the difference with Labour is that they based a lot of their GE on anti sleaze and corruption.
Surprising how many Labour supporters on here just won’t have the decency to admit how badly their Party are doing and how hypocritical they are with their actions.

We need a bit of consistency in government, we can't have chopping and changing all over again. It's ridiculous in Westminster. I don't get why she needs to quit over this at all.
So on the premise of no chopping and changing we accept individuals in high office that have committed a fraud and have the authority to make important decisions for the electorate.
Wow …and I always wanted MP’s to be honest. Mind you that’s never going to happen.

Have you read about it? It was 10 years ago. I know you hate the labour government but in this era, we seem to jump on everything and demand people quit or apologise. It's RIDICULOUS. We have this government for 4 years and 6 months into it we've now lost another Transport Secretary over something stupid. Do you understand how disruptive this is? We haven't had a consistent Transport Sec for 5 years.

I refer you to post #19.

Adding that Sunak or Boris would have said they had their full confidence and there was no case to answer in the interim.

A minor misdemeanour but resigned.

Compare and contrast with the previous lot where real crimes were committed and nothing happened.

I voted for them and I’m reasonably happy with their performance so far. That’s my opinion based on their policies and actions, you have your opinions too and that’s fine but we don’t all have to agree with you because you shout the loudest.

As far as Haigh goes I’m not that bothered about what she’s done and would have preferred her to stay in post. I don’t think it’s sleaze I think it’s a genuine mistake.

That’s indicative of the standard of MP’s we’ve had over the years.
As for 10 years….what’s your defence of that? She committed an offence that should have barred her from government. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened.

Even without this scam, she's the absolute worst kind of minister that people want to see running the country. Whether she is Labour or Tory, good riddance.

Oh give over Bendit, you're being absolutely ridiculous. This country is going to the dogs and we're soft and we need a stronger more consistent government. The way we approach politics is harmful for the country at the moment in forcing people to quit. It was dealt with in the courts.

I assume, considering you're an ex policeman, would we expect something like this to affect everyone in their role?

Just as a side note, I've never been a labour voter. And probably never will be.

What's the fraud in this instance?

How has Haigh benefitted financially?
She reported the theft of her mobile to the Police knowing all along the opposite. She said it was subject of a mugging. The Police interpreted the fact that she was probably trying to gain a financial advantage by getting a newer phone.

She pleaded guilty to the fraud.

She didnt benefit financially because she was caught out.

Deary me

She made a mistake 10 years ago and was tried and convicted.
She claims it was a genuine error but pleaded guilty to fraud probably acting on legal advice.
She was honest about this conviction and declared it up front when she was required to.
Now she has resigned quickly because it is distracting from government business.
It is probably correct to say that she should not have been appointed to a ministerial position with this conviction, but that is debatable.
IMO It's a bit of a non-story like I said. Did anybody know who she was before this? I don't think I did.
I notice that she has attracted some mysogynistic comments from some posters on what she wears and of course predictions of the government falling and Lammy and Rayner being sacked etc. etc.
I do wonder if some of the people on here want the UK to fail. As pointed out, stuff like this is disruptive and what teh UK needs is a period of stable, sensible, boring government. Starmer can certainly provide the boring bit - the rest we will see.

Your first paragraph Kurt, I tend to agree with, just not at the expense of standards.

IMHO anyone, any Party, who is a criminal should not have a senior position in office

Re: voting - apologies for that

A criminal? 500 quid? Jesus christ mate. Get a grip.

Half the country is a criminal then. Because the majority have had parking fines, speeding tickets. The view is outrageous tbh.

No, when she reported it, she thought it stolen.

She failed to report its subsequent recovery on advice from a solicitor.

That was a daft thing to do, but there is no financial benefit to it at any point, nor would be.

She declared the conviction and that was that. At what point do past misdemeanours fully declared become exactly that, a thing of the past, or do they permanently prevent someone taking office?

Meanwhile Chris Pincher goes round molesting young men, Jeremy Hunt forgets he owns 7 houses, Zahawi forgets he has received £20 million and is liable to tax, and those inadvertent mistakes are ignored and they continue in office.

Just the same. Not.

Not a fan of hers however should this trivial case have ever gone to court? She got a conditional discharge, wouldn't a Police caution been sufficient punishment?

EBSN - I enjoyed that post.

Good points, some not and I loved the last sentence.

Give over - from a legal angle, she went ‘no comment’ on interview.

I know enough about legal procedures to know she was advised to do that so she wouldn’t incriminate herself.

You don’t plead guilty to something you haven’t done, especially with legal representation.

You do genuinely make me laugh with your obsessive protection of anything negative that’s levelled at your Party.

It's not my party. Never been a member.

Absolute storm in a tea cup. She made a mistake, was found guilty and has resigned from government as soon as it came to light.

Doesn’t even come close to the shit the Tories were getting up to including receiving criminal convictions whilst in office!!!!

Best thing about this thread is the ones complaining about the attire of certain politicians will also have been complaining about kier starmer getting his free gear whilst also previously accepting the scruffy git that was Boris Johnson. Right wing hypocrisy at its finest.

Sorry Kurt in my book, how can you differentiate if somebody has done something criminal by the amount. That’s plain ridiculous.

The law is the law and she committed a criminal offence.

If she didnt, she wouldn’t have a criminal record and she wouldn’t have had to resign.

Oh and just to clarify - parking fines and speeding aren’t designated criminal offences so your logic falls flat there.

Partygate?

Sex pests?

Insider information?

Tax evasion?

Bullying of staff?

Are these all permissible? All breaches of the Ministerial code
