The numbers are certainly increasing.
Speaking as a cabbie, you won’t be surprised to hear I don’t like them! 😂
Obviously, the over-riding issue for cabbies is loss of trade, but we do have a lot of other gripes about them that most Uber users either haven’t considered or care about.
There’s a bit of conflict building up locally recently, that could be avoided if Uber drivers managed to stick to the very few rules they’re supposed to abide by, but users won’t care whilst they’re paying a couple of quid less.

Couple of quid less in some cases it's nearly half!
My house to Poulton is a fiver but you have to be careful with Uber prices they change and sometimes at peak times are often dearer than you local cab.
 
The one thing that always winds me up about cabbies is the “will be with you in ten mins” and 30 mins later nothing.

I’m sure it’s the radio controller person not the cabbie but it still annoys. With Uber you can see where they are

You can with local cabs just download the App a bit like er the Uber App. 😀
 
Had them in Birmingham for a good while and the fares have started going up. I've gone back to using local companies. " Which way do you normally go?" . I then notice most of them are licensed in Wolverhampton
 
Booked a local company to go to Birmingham airport a couple of weeks ago £35 set fare. I didn't on the way back because of possible delays . Ordered an Uber when I landed estimated fare £28 actual fare £41 . I had a good row as he went around the houses literally.i won't be using them again and Bolt are as bad

To get a Private Hire badge in Wolverhampton, you need to attend a 6 hour seminar then pass a multiple choice questionnaire on its contents. No previous knowledge/experience required. No questions on ‘street knowledge’.
Cost £40.
Then you can get your badge, and drive a Wolverhampton plated Private Hire car ANYWHERE in England.
Compare to Blackpool Private Hire applicants, who pay for their knowledge test, include street knowledge/routes, THEN have to pay for a separate 5(?) evening course on taxi law, dealing with vulnerable customers, county lines, terrorism awareness, child abuse etc, (the contents of Wolverhampton’s 6 hour course).
Cost £400+
Then work under the jurisdiction of local licensing inspectors who can pull you day or night for checks, sometimes resulting in being sent to the council depot for on the spot pit testing (MOT for cabs).

I must admit that I ask “Which way..” quite often, but only when there’s two equally valid routes, and I always qualify it by giving the alternatives.
My mate got a cab a couple of years back (I won’t mention Premiere out of professional courtesy) and the driver asked him to tell him the way to Talbot Square! True story.

I like some of these apps when I am in an unfamiliar place - as the fare is known in advance. I actually thought Uber was fixed like Grab but it appears not from above.
Many (not all) taxi drivers have been ripping people off for years especially when you don’t know the way.

The other old chestnut of ‘sorry mate got not change’ has also gone out the window.

These apps have to some degree solved these problems and in reality many Taxi drivers created the problem in the first place.

I find it genuinely hard to feel sorry for most of them!

Whenever Iv used Uber it’s pre agreed price on the app and that’s all Iv ever paid .Bolt we’re excellent in Prague but don’t know about over here ?

nearly all the taxis in Macclesfield are registered in Wolverhampton as well, not gone down to well with the few locals that remain.
 
Same in Manchester, but I remember a cabbie with a Wolverhampton badge saying he'd been forced to do it because the local badges get issued in a pretty corrupt way within a certain community.

Not sure if there's any truth to that mind.

Blackpool cabbies hey. Lol... I was down in Blackpool in July for the darts I needed to get home for a family emergency. I called c cars not a one taxi would take me back to manchester as too busy on a Saturday. Missed the last train. So to cut a long story short I went to the taxi rank outside coral island and a driver reluctantly took me home for £220. Never again. Lol.

I suspect that was more a case of the office not wanting a cab out of commission for a couple of hours, rather than no driver wanting to take you!
One things for certain, if you offered me £220 to take you, I’d ‘reluctantly’ snatch your hand off!

a fair few blackpool private hire drivers and the cars they drive are licensed in wolverhampton. there is one particular company in blackpool that does this for all drivers

Yep got a Premier taxi to take us from the Farmers to Seasiders Way for the Wigan game, driver didn’t know how to get there so had to direct him!🤷‍♂️

I just need to get home fast and was willing to pay. But not much cooperation from staff.. Just nobody can do it please try in the morning. Lol.. Plus I know blackpool like the back of my hand. Some take the piss and go the long route but I suspect that happens a lot with visiters. Lol. I would do the same.

Yep I know Blackpool well and family live in Poulton. It’s always interesting when a taxi driver picks us up from holiday accommodation and hears our Scottish accents. I usually wait a few minutes as we head from North Shore to South Shore via Stanley Park and drop into the conversation is Lytham Road and Central Drive closed or similar 😂

Handy to know, use them in Yorkshire when we're over there, checked the app and they're available in Thornton.
 
I can, hand on heart, say I’ve NEVER taken someone the wrong way, deliberately. I know it happens, though, I’ve heard some horror stories!
I picked up a youngish lass a few years back, from one of the bars round Queen St.
She was heading for a B&B on York St, but stressed not Yorkshire St. I passed some comment like “Don’t worry, they’re next to each other, anyway”, and she argued with me and said they’re miles apart, and that she’d made that mistake the previous night. She’d realised she’d been dropped on the wrong street, then flagged down another taxi who took her on a £15 trip to the next block!!
There’s some genuine drivers who simply don’t know the streets as well as they should, hopefully just a lack of experience, but they’ll only know the obvious routes and don’t yet know side street short cuts. I try to bite my tongue if I get one of those, but I’ve also had drivers who dont recognise me and try to take the piss. I’m happy to tell them I’m a cabbie and watch them go into panic mode.
If you ever have any doubts, ask for a detailed receipt, including cab plate number/drivers badge number and query it with licensing.
It genuinely pisses me off when punters get ripped off, it tars us all.

I do not envy cabbies in Blackpool one bit. All the piss heads and crazy one way systems it must be a nightmare.. I'm not racist. As fought in the army for equality. But on thing I do like in Blackpool is that the cabs are not majority Asian drivers. Unlike most other northern towns. Nothing against Asians as most are hard working family loving people.

OK, I take that back

Having been let down by the taxi my hotel in Leeds booked me never turning up, I decided to give Uber a try and downloaded the app. Used them 4 times over the 2 days and was very impressed. all arrived within 3 minutes of booking them on the app (1 within 30 seconds, 2 within a minute and the other after 3 minutes). Cheaper than a taxi too
