Unbelievable Von Der Leyen

They do now, the problem is the genie is out of the bottle. How many Europeans won’t want it now.

It turns out that the Pfizer jab made in the EU has to be sent to America for bottling and finishing, and that the USAs EU style embargo means they might not get them back even though they are EU orders. Couldn’t make it up! Would be amusing if all this grandstanding wasn’t going to cost lives in Europe.

the EU is showing it’s added value here...not

The Germans’ nickname for her is “Shotgun Uschi” after all the trouble she caused in Angela Merkel’s cabinet. Angela finally felt she had to foist her off onto the EU Commission.

She does realise we also make vaccines in this country in far more productive sites and the block can go both ways?
Maybe she would have been better ensuring they signed a proper time bound contract with AZ (like the U.K. did) instead of some wishy washy best endeavours contract.

The problem is not the contract, the problem is quite simply production.

The difference is that UK government understood the whole development and manufacturing process very early on then acted as a partner in the development and production of the vaccines and did everything it could to ensure that the manufacturers (not just AZ) could make it in the UK in as large as possible quantities, essentially the government took on the risks of the process to ensure that production could be as far ahead as possible and is now reaping the rewards.

Fundamentally the EC did not understand the process and did none of the above, they appear to have thought that they could just sign the contracts (late), let the manufacturers take the risks, and the vaccines would just appear from thin air, as a consequence their production is much further behind.

Edit:

Google "uk covid vaccine manufacturer" and you should find a FT article about this, I would post a link but for some reason I can access the page from google, but if I try to link it brings up the paywall.

I think you're referring to the plant in Alabama, but most of the Pfizer vaccine ingredients are actually made in the UK. Following Mad Ursula's threats to block exports of Pfizer vaccines to the UK, the Financial Times reported that "The EU’s own production of Pfizer vaccines is reliant on raw materials from the UK so it is a very dangerous game to play." It said "Last November Croda International plc, a UK-based chemicals company, announced that it had entered into a five year agreement with Pfizer to make "novel excipients" for its vaccine." Croda sends four ingredients to Pfizer that help to carry genetic instructions into a person's cells after they have been injected.

UVDL complained yesterday about the UK's lack of reciprocation, but she might just get reciprocation she doesn't want if the EU starts a vaccine war. Boris has no compunction when it comes to being bullied by Brussels.
