I was committed to Brexit it was a damn fine idea because the UK just didn't belong. However leaving the single market was an act of singular stupidity that I doubt will ever be equalled.

From your comment I can see that you understand the situation regarding the UK and the EU. However, I am absolutely sure that the vast majority of voters took none of that into consideration. It was in/out and that meant in or out of everything.
 
Jacques Delors n'est -ce-pas! Those were the days . Some battling between him and Thatcher but ultimately despite her huge faults, she saw the value of being in the EU and the single market.
