We all ready for an alarm to go off on our phones at 3 pm?

Yep just set mine to speak the text too so it's like the movies, I might stop drop and roll in tescos.

I’ve switched the alerts settings off so I won’t get this intrusive alarming noise on my phone.

I’ve survived 54 years without this alert. It’s to warn of a threat to life from flooding or severe weather or something else dangerous.

I find it intrusive to be honest. We are all being monitored, listened to, and controlled to some extent, by the state as it is. I’m not opening up my device to the Government so that they can use it overtly as suggested to warn me of something. Nor will I open up my device so they can potentially do something covertly.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but it’s not beyond the realms of reasonable possibility that they would use this opportunity as a Trojan horse to add some monitoring capability to our phones.

So I won’t be accepting any alarm and I’ll take the chance that I’ll get by just fine, as I’ve somehow managed to so far.

Last summer we had a hot spell. On the news we heard there was a threat to life and that we should be staying indoors as much as possible. Threat to life. Cos it was 40 degrees. Well maybe for some very ill people. But I’m not aware of holiday aircraft returning the the UK empty cos all the holidaymakers that went to Turkey, Greece, Spain etc dropped dead en masse when it hit 40 degrees. That’s the sort of nonsense alerts you’ll be opening yourselves up to. It will be health and safety on steroids being continuously sent down our phones. No thanks.

We had thousands of excess deaths during the heatwave last year.

Yeah if only they’d got this alert. What a missed opportunity. All these thousands would be alive right now. Of course.

Hang on I’ve changed my mind. I have just been watching Sky News where one of their ‘expert’ guests said he was aware that ‘libertarians’ may not want this alarm BUT they’d probably regret disabling if it they woke up one day and found the bottom of their bed was on fire. 🤣🤣🤣

What an odd post.

Yours is an odd post. You reference thousands of excess deaths in relation to this new Government alarm. So what’s your point? Are you seriously suggesting this phone alarm would have saved those lives?
Excess heat increases pressure on the heart for those who are medically vulnerable due to age or health status. Unfortunately it leads to some heat related deaths.
The answer to that isn’t a phone alarm to the whole nation.
If you are one of those people that need the health and safety warning that a packet of nuts may contain nuts then I feel for you. But most people can determine that for themselves, and they’ll also get by just fine without a phone alert to tell them it’s going to be very hot and to wear sunscreen, a hat, and to drink plenty of water.

No I didnt. You mocked the idea that the heat was a threat to life so I pointed out thousands of people died.

If this was debate about whether excess heat is dangerous to some people then we’d be on the same side of the debate.
I didn’t mock that - you need to appreciate the context of my overall post - in which I said in that excess heat is dangerous to some very ill people. What I was mocking was the Government feeling the need to send an alert to everyone. We already have media news coverage which is saturated with weather related stories when it’s hot or cold or stormy. So I don’t want or need my iPhone to blare at me when it gets to 35 degrees this summer.

You quite clearly mocked the idea that 40 degree heat was a threat to life but if you are backing down from that now then great.

The fallacy here is you are only thinking about yourself. And I'm sure in most cases we can think of where such an alert may be used you or I wouldn't necessarily need it since we are both I am guessing healthy, non vulnerable people who are actively online, seeing what's going on in the news pretty much 24/7. But the UK Government isn't catering to your or I, they have to try to do what is best for all people, and yes that includes people who for some reason or another, die due to heatwaves. Many people can't fathom how that is possible, and even mock it, but it happens. So trying to do something about it, I don't see any problem with that. You don't need it and have turned your emergency alert notifications off. Great. So what's the problem?

Yep, turned mine off as well, I think I'll be able to cope.

Malced, I'm currently mentoring a young leader, any links to great ideas and inspirational quotes on positivity?
Thanks in advance

Yea tell them the importance of thinking for themselves, freedom of speech, challenging the Government/state narrative and having a sense of humour/appreciating irony.

I was having my afternoon nap. Fortunately I woke just before it went off otherwise I’d have fallen off the bed and probably broken something.

As soon as you turn it back on, it will go off.

The old air raid siren system that we had got decommissioned in the early 1990s, used to sound them in Fleetwood to warn of the

flooding. Some of the old sirens got sold to Iraq and were used in the first Gulf War. A cost-saving at the end of the last Thatcher

government, as far I am aware today is the first time its replacement has been tested, over 30 years later.

Mine went off at 15.02 I thought it had failed and almost swallowed a four finger kitkat whole when it went off.

Mine went off when I was washing the car & I only knew because the dog was behind the sofa trembling 😂

Not sure why people are so against this. If I'm ever in the Trafford Centre and someone lets off a really bad fart, I think it's great that the Government can now send out a warning.

but you'd already know being the 'someone' in question

Surprised at people ridiculing this it only needs to save one life to be worthwhile. In the US my phone has emergency texts which warn of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes and electrical storms. The same information is also broadcast on the tv with amber alerts detailing child abductions with specifics on make of car, vicinity etc..

The chances of tornados, hurricanes etc are pretty remote here though.

Let's hope the Russians don't hack the system or we'll see panic on a scale not seen since the toilet roll shortage.
