Very pleasing performance and hopefully Appleton learned a lot about playing people in their correct positions. Seeing Yates upfront and not on the wing was so nice and made such a difference to our attacking threat. CJ as well, brilliant. Should never be replaced with the likes of Beesley and Lavery on the wing. This desire to play a target man upfront has to change. We need Yates upfront competing with Lavery and using Madine when we go two up top and go more direct.

We rode our luck but once we got the second, we looked comfortable. Lyons wasn’t great in the first half but much better in the second as he got used to the pace. The defence overall were much better although Husband got skinned a few times far too easily.

Midfield kept at it but once Dougall came on, coped with them much better. Carey had a good game and Poveda showed his quality. Credit to Appleton where it’s due and him playing in the hole has proved a good decision.

I really hope he doesn’t go back to playing strikers on the wing and a target man upfront. This performance in the second half with Yates upfront shows we can do much better with the right team selection.

How's that humble pie taste pal?

Got a fair bit to eat.

No need to reply. No words you can say ....
No humble pie. Look at team news thread. I said Yates should be upfront and look what happened. It’s not rocket science. Appleton’s team selections have been shit and in my opinion today showed we could have picked up far more points playing people in their correct positions.

But he wanted to see how Beesley got on in the centre, which was the right thing to do. He saw the same as us, that he wasn't very good so I would expect he may be going out on loan. Yates made a massive difference. The thing is he has Madine as an option next week so who does he play, he will have a choice of 3 as Bowler and Rogers are likely to start, or how can he drop CJ as he is great on the left hand side and has Madine, Yates and Lavery fighting it out for the middle, the addition of Bowler and Rogers has really shaken things up and at last we are in a position where we have real competition for players up front.

We need another central defender and we really need that defensive central midfield beast but Patino and Carey worked their socks off today and Carey was very good.

A reasonable post with some good thinking. However, there is room up front for Gaz - if not always - and the new purchases should limit Jerry and Shayne's time out wide. Even so, you're never going to stop Jerry Yates mixing it all over the pitch.

Agree with all that except Carey was poor. Unable to read the game and persists in going backwards even when golden opportunities are available to go forward. He looked better when Dougall came on to offer more protectio.

Have to say I thought Yates made a huge difference when he came on. Yates, Poveda, CJ or Rogers and Lavery pressing was fantastic and they couldn't handle it. How nice too was it to see balls being slid through for our front players to run on to with a bit of actual pace looking dangerous.
Yates starts as CF for me next game behind him Poveda, Bowler and one of Rogers, CJ or Lavery.

In my opinion no room for Madine unless we need to go direct or play a two. Great player but as a lone striker, he makes us weaker in my opinion.

Carey was fine it was patino that kept giving the ball away, he’s only young and may benefit from a rest he’s played a lot of football.

Patino's limitations were exposed. He needs good coaching.
I don't think it's that. I think it's more that he is young and used to playing u23s football when he gets a lot more time on the ball and in the championship he gets closed down much quicker. End of the day though, that's why he was loaned out. He still does some fantastic things but mixed with dodgy things. As you'd expect of him.

Agree fully. I'm a fan and I'm glad we've got him. My post was made in a more caring manner than a critical one.
