What’s happened with Phil Foden?

In my opinion, Foden didn't seem to track back much in the first game. Lack of experience perhaps. This left Trippier a bit exposed. Wasn't much better against Scotland. Southgate appears to cut out as many errors/problems as possible, including players who don't work hard for the team. He's a young lad, and will learn. Grealish showboats, but works hard as well. He's ahead of Foden all day, but currently both are behind Saka. Not sure what's happened to Sancho. And we've not missed Mount.

It's all about getting results, and not getting too carried away (which the media did yesterday with all the usual years of hurt rubbish).

Rejoice in the various options available to GS. I’ve said on another thread that I wouldn’t be surprised to see Saka swapped for Grealish and Mount in on Saturday. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Foden more involved from the bench.

Look at the kids reaction to the first goal last night. One thing is certain, he’s well up for it and is fully engaged with the rest of the squad.

Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson, Tony Currie, Matt LeTissier, Frank Worthington and to a lesser extent Glenn Hoddle.
It's an English trait not to play your most gifted flamboyant players in the international arena when everyone knows how good they are.

The last time we had a player that illuminated a game and had the nation on the edge of its seat like that we managed to reach the semi finals of both the world cup and euros in the 90's

I personally think that the likes of Foden, Grealish and Sancho will have to come to terms with being bit part players in a straight jacket of safety.
You're right, it's been DECADES since we reached the semis of anything.

Behind Saka? I'm not having that

Alf Ramsey’s England were boring from 1962-1974. Yet he won the World Cup. They played their best ever game in that 1966 final. As a player Ramsey was a defender as was Southgate. IMO defenders who become managers tend to prefer cautious tactics.

When Revie was England manager he refused to sub Tony Currie in a friendly. Currie was asking him to come off as he had run out of puff. Revie said to his assistant coach “ No he’s not coming off. Let the lazy bugger stay on and suffer.”😀
We can’t be harsh on revie though you need to realise he was a massive **

I think that you will find that Foden and Phillips ( and anyone else with a booking) will not be considered for the Ukraine match. If England progress, everyone will then be in contention.

The right hand forward position still looks available for someone to grab. Love Saka but thought he was underwhelming against Germany and commentators have been going way OTT with him (so annoying). Foden or Sancho might still get in. With Ukraine and Denmark/Czech to come a chance to experiment with that position.

Dunno about Shaw but to my eyes Sterling was the stand-out player. 9 is OTT, but certainly 7.5 or 8.
Think he was poor pre-70. Slowed the game down massively at times. Missed players in open space. Ignoring the fact he later on put one of their best players into space with the ball making it a 2 on 1. I felt he's played slowly often which is the Man City way but he needs to get his head up more and move more off the ball. It was noticeable Shaw was struggling for an out ball at times and Kane and Sterling were static. Improve on that and including his goals he could be man of the Tournament.

Yeah he is a bit slow but he was noticeable for stepping up and taking the game to Germany, for me. No one else seemed to be doing much by way of forward momentum. Saka did a little bit, largely without success. Get your point but I think Sterling's growing into the tournament and there won't yet be the automatic chemistry he has with Man City team mates. Obviously later in games space opens up and the extra thrust of Grealish helped. Raheem's a definite starter for me.

He starts for me too as he's scoring goals and vital goals, he's just a bit frustrating as I think he can play better.
