What do you do with Sonny?

People are too quick to jump on the backs of players without seeing the bigger picture

Its up to the manager to get the best out of players and play a system to suit

The current system doesn't suit Carey, it also doesn't suit Dale or Cj if they are playing as wing backs, even our best defender in Marv has struggled

Just saying he's shit get rid is not only lazy its ** stupid and just shows people up for having zero footballing acumen
As above, why do we need to do something with Sonny just because he isn't flavour of the month just now? Can he not just be part of our talented squad and fight for a start?

He has stepped up from lower non-league straight in to Championship and League 1 football. He has shown he is a talented lad, can we not just let him get on with it?

We simply don't play a formation or system to suit Carey

Remember Fleetwood away, driving runs and shooting from outside of the box, that's what he should be doing

Not running around like a headless chicken playing wide left or passing it sideways as a deep lying midfield player
Yes he’s not a holding midfielder. Maybe behind the front two with not much defensive duties is his position.

He’s 6ft tall and around 12 stone. If he can’t stand his ground now, he never will.
But we know he can't. He just does not like the physical side of the game. With his physique he should be a midfield enforcer, but Appleton, when manager, admitted Carey does not even tackle in training!

I know, I was replying to post #48 who said he’s got time to bulk up. It’s not bulk he’s short of, it’s bottle.

I think the team we have under this manager is a positive set up and he’s in good hands to develop and improve. Might just need a bit more time that’s all. As long as we have quality in the midfield he can be back up.

He has flashed talent but we've been waiting two and a half years for him to get in the team and affect games consistently. Excuses are wearing thin and it doesn't look like it's gonna happen for him sadly.

I reckon that's the position 99% of outfield players would like to play! Do all the sexy stuff and never get your hands dirty.

You have to be better than Sonny Carey to earn the right to be a luxury player. He needs to be an effective midfield player and he's only really shown it in flashes.

I really thought he would progress this season and be a really outstanding talent for us. He's only 23 and so has loads of time to mature and develop and I just wonder if we got another body in if we would benefit from a Casey/Dale type loan to another club for the rest of the season. Games just seem to pass him by and he has next to no impact on a game.
With Kenny gone, the chance is there to excel but, unless there is a radical change in Critch's system which in this case I don't see as the problem, then I don't know how he will achieve that?
He’s not the same type of player as Kenny.
Sonny is at his best running at the opposition’s goal. Remember Fleetwood and Posh this season or Hull, last season.

Barring a few moment here and there, he's been shockingly poor. The lad has loads of talent but just can't seem to find any consistency or dominate a game. It's a big few months ahead for him as if things don't improve, we probably need to let him go and find someone better.

I honestly thought he would kick on this season and be a star man. we have let better players go in the past who have done more than Sonny and I do not understand the love in with him. With others I honestly think he needs a loan to League 2 and see if it shocks him into action for next season.

Needs to play regularly so a season in league two would be best for him. Think we will keep him though as he’s a player that can slot into most positions in the midfield/attack, albeit without ever doing anything brilliant in them, much like Connolly in the defensive positions

Think he's a good player however the critch system isn't right for him,he isn't a player that can run all night or has pace.. watched him last night , looked like a fat kid running after an ice cream van, just not quite getting there, left huffing and puffing without any end product.
Yep completely outpaced by the Bolton midfield at times

Needs a run of games to get going but we can’t afford him that time at the minute

Needs to play as an attacking midfielder to be effective. James Husband was quoted as saying Carey was the player who could play at a higher level so he must have something.

He could learn a thing or two from Morgan who is always busy and looking for the ball, Carey does seem a bit passive in that sense.
James Husband being such a respected figure within the game, I take it ...

And, on the closing point to the above post, has anyone entertained the notion of possibly trying to spark interest in Carey from the footballing aristocrats of South Yorks, aka Sheffield Wednesday? That way, if he could be lured over to the football mecca that is Hillsborough, if he was to 'strut his stuff' over there in pretty much the same way he has done during his time at Bloomfield Rd, I can see him rapidly acquiring the title: The Massive Passive ...

Has a certain ring to it, don't ya think?

What are his attributes, too often he plays it safe, or tries to and fails, often he almost completely disappears. Doesn't win headers, corners and free kicks are poor, can't or doesn't tackle, got left for dead for pace and strength by a Bolton player last night, almost has a good long range shot on him in the way that I am almost good at darts, usually just wide of where you want it to go. And he parks in disabled parking bays! Time for him to go.
So, there we have a brief outline of his positives. For the sake of balance, d'you think we might just take a quick gander at his negatives ...?

yep another player that is an enigma just like Hamilton. Too many bad games and not enough good or even average ones. But here's the difference. Don't think I'll ever be a big fan of Hamilton but there is a way to get the best out of Hamilton and that's by playing him as a winger on his best side and having cover in behind him. But finding a role for Carey is so much harder. Think we've got better box to box players and certainly in Dembele we've got a [much] better player in the no 10 role. Think he put in a run of four or five decent performances not long back but he's gone backwards again and pretty much every game he plays now makes you question what he brings to the team.

As it stands just don't see a long term future for him here.
Yes. As soon as he hit a bit of form after persevering with him standing there as the game went past him week on week, he was then 'rested' and we're back to square one.

We have sufficient options and are needing immediate impact. Not sure where he fits in.

Plus I couldn't believe how slow he looked playing further forward on Tuesday night.

And, if it isn't going to be happening for him 'sadly', I think, by the same token, we can pretty much rule out the possibility of it happening 'happily'.

He’s not the same type of player as Kenny.
Sonny is at his best running at the opposition’s goal. Remember Fleetwood and Posh this season or Hull, last season. The trouble at Fleetwood was he scored two cracking goals, but then gave the win away with a sloppy cross field pass, which was cut out, and led to their equaliser!

Ruined by Appleton. Hopefully still come good.
Sort of agree but he's been back under Critchley for 7/8 months and I'd say has actually deteriorated further.
That funny position that he needs games to build confidence but it seems when he's getting games it's knocking his confidence!
