What we need to sort this summer…

I don’t think the Head Coach is going anywhere, we’re gonna be “stuck with him”…

So here’s the start of what we need to box off.

Let Virtue, Connolly, Lavery and anyone else leave. We’ll miss you at left-wing back and your heavy touches. I’d activate the +1 on Husband (decent squad member and left sided option) and Carey (if we give him some freedom on the pitch)

Sign about 10 new players. Some proven League 1 talent, with a sprinkling of young Premier League quality on loan- Surely he’s got a contact at Liverpool or Villa… 6 of the new signings need to be 1st team ready.

Having bigged up the signing of Kyle Joseph as part of the Yates deal we need to let him have a good pre-season and play him. He’s by far our best forward of the 4 that played today. I’d keep Kouassi as 5th choice, maybe a League 2 loan… get rid of Beesley, I’m sure a League 2/Conference club will sign him on the back of a few goals this season, but 1 good game every 10 isn’t what we’re after. I’m thinking 2-3 strikers. Need one who’s mobile and good in the air to be the central striker, can take the ball to feet but can offer a run in behind and one that wins headers. We need to spend on this as this is the focal point of the team.

Rob Apter HAS to be given an opportunity to play. We’ll find out if he’s good enough. He is and will be.

The formation is key to getting the best out of the players we have… think Joseph is best as a wide forward of 3… for me we should be playing 4-3-3… but I don’t think Neil is having that so if it’s 3-5-2 or 3-4-3… we need to sign defenders who are good on the ball. Brave on the ball. Comfortable and confident to pass forwards. This is essential. If you want to play “possession based football” you need players who are good in possession.

We’ll need at least two midfielders, able to play on the half-turn, play forwards, run forward with the ball and get beyond the strikers if required.

We’ll need proper wing-backs… don’t even think about signing Coulson permanently. See if Dorking Wanderers or KFC Fylde want to take CJ on a season long loan even if it means us paying 95% of his wages.

Sign someone who can is Set-piece/free-kick expert. We’re dogshit at free-kicks. Sack short corners off.

Give some Youth players a chance. If they do well in the Motors trophy, give them a league start.

We’ll need some players with some fight in them who are a bit lairy and up for giving the ref and their players shit. It’s not about “nice young man”… it’s about “decent player with an edge to him”. You can’t be nice like Neil in League 1. You need some balls.

Besides adding a new coach into the mix and potting off one of the Boswell brothers which won’t happen and changing the formation, the gaffer needs to understand that we’ll be better than 80% of the league, so fuck worrying about them and just go for it.

It’s a simple game, but we’ve got a head coach who would make making toast a military operation, ensuring every area of the bread was toasted and at the same toasted level and that’s before we talk about adding butter/margarine which he’d probably weigh out and have a selection of knives to use, this whilst covering the smoke alarm with a sock during the process and opening the window and patio doors, only slightly so no insects could gain entry. Turn the overthinking in and play a lot quicker and with a bit of passion. That’s all we ask for.

Off the pitch, move the away fans close to the North as NC has just cleared the dance floor at a wedding by dropping in the Shoop Shoop song atmosphere wise. Come up with an innovative ST pricing structure. Get the East refurb fully locked in and start digging holes in the Grange Park swamp. The board would have to be on another planet to not be clever this summer with their approach as the gate today showed. The atmosphere was also flatter than a CJ cross.

It won’t take much but it’ll take some bollocks and bravery this summer. Time to stop being boring and plodding and remember the town is famous for fun & rollercoasters and for this very well paid infrastructure of CEO’s and recruitment to start earning their dough.

We’ve made a right mess of it this season as it wouldn’t have taken much. If we haven’t learnt then it’s going to be even more annoying next season.

For me I'd look at bidding for Jodi Jones (LWB) and Macauley Langstaff(CF) from Notts County. I'd also want another top striker, a top centre back probably 2 and a top ball playing creative centre mid. Won't come cheap unless 2 or 3 are loans but I honestly think we are lacking about 5 or 6 first team starters.

The boring prick will definitely change the formation. He made out that the players we have only suit 5 at the back and that's why he plays it. We all know that's bollocks and the prick just won't change his arrogant ways. As soon as we have a reshuffle of the squad he can make out like it's now suitable for a 433 or whatever else. He's just an awful self obsessed **** who's better off going back to being a youth coach.

SS we’ve been told you read this board, and have been accused of taking too much notice of it at times.
Well read this post, then offer AK the job of CEO.

Oxford United managed to appoint two decent coaches in the course of one season so don't know why we are stuck with Critchley. He has regressed a lot as a coach, not confident enough to change formations in game never mind from game to game. He is not a man-manager and lacks the humility to bring in a No.2 who would be a benefit to him in place of the Boswell brothers.

Simon please protect your investment and employ a decent manager who can bring in players, develop them and take the club forward. Too many players have gone backwards in terms of performance this season.

I love your interpretation of "won't take much"!
10 players, new assistant coach, start the east stand and training ground!

It would be much cheaper to get rid of Critchley instead.... and more entertaining for the fans

Yep, get more from what we have. Keeping him for 10/15 games out of perceived fairness/wanting to be proven right is stupid IMO

Wonder if as an alternative to perfectly tanned toast he mixes it up with crumpets or maybe current teacakes 🤔 as if.

We’ve made a right mess of it this season as it wouldn’t have taken much. If we haven’t learnt then it’s going to be even more annoying next season.
You have written a lot ,but the only thing we need to change is Critchley or get Critchley to change . Everything else you have written is a sticking plaster over a gapping wound.

Two points.

One, if Critchley stays then what happens in the summer will be pretty meaningless. SS would have to spend a fortune for the team to be better than average.

Which leads me on to point two. There will be no big outgoing transfer to fund spending.

What needs to happen is NC to leave by a mutual consent as soon as the p/o's are not possible. Hopefully a new bloke has already been identified, not currently employed and has time to be looking at the squad strengths and weaknesses. There will be players out, but I don't think it needs to be as drastic as some think.

Enjoyed the summary but the line that stuck out for me was ...

6 of the new signings need to be 1st team ready.

I really did not get in January what we were doing in the window but had we had got just a couple of players capable of going straight in to the first team then we might be looking at a different scenario.

The training ground.
The East Stand.
Access to and egress from the ground for away fans.
Critchley's support team.
New loans who can score goals.
A decent new striker.
Andy Lyons - let's get him playing good football again.
A reason to use the South East corner.
Tactics that don't send fans to sleep.

Left wingback
Destroying midfielder
Play making midfielder
Proven striker at this level
At least 2 wise attacking players

That the minimum based on what we have today imo, any go, improved replacement required

Should these attacking players approach each game scented with frankincense and myrrh?

They can smell however they wish as long as they are players who are capable of taking us up.

A promotion winning team needs half a team who can hold their own in the league above, a few wise men who have been there and done it and some up and coming stars. We need a fair bit of work to get to this point and as Simon has said if not this year then next, this is what I feel we need

Whatever we need for the squad, is overshadowed by the need to replace the manager. His negative tactics won’t change, why would they? He’s stuck with it despite terrible away results and underwhelming performances even when we’ve won at home.

Time for a change.

Agree.

No.1 priority should be …get rid of the useless manager…..😵‍💫🔫
Ps i’ve noticed the “we’re lucky to have him” brigade have gone very quiet …..

It’s ok having a system (wing-backs) but what about when it doesn’t work?

We only have CJ Hamilton as an out and out winger option. Complete madness.

Some fair points but I have seen nothing yet to convince me Joseph will turn out to be any good.

So what IQ are we looking at for our "wise" players?
I was being silly, as I often am. However, I do see the point being made. Rhodes is a wise striker: been there, done it, knows how things play out. Kevin Phillips was the same, as was Paul Simpson - though from a midfield position. We could try for an ex-Prem player on his last hurrah or (more likely), an ex-top Championship player as he succumbs to time's winged chariot. We need that guile alongside a keen youngster who can learn and has energy to burn. We supposedly have the scouting staff in place so, why not? I'd be trying in Scotland actually. It's served us well down the years.

Yep, get more from what we have. Keeping him for 10/15 games out of perceived fairness/wanting to be proven right is stupid IMO
Spot on. clappers. And I realise I'm not the first to say this, but there really is NO room for sentiment in the game today.
