Why broadcast?

When did we stop making announcements in Parliament? Is it subverting the democratic process? Discuss.

WOW - I agree with you!!!
I think the parliamentary questions are coming tomorrow. Maybe that’s the wrong way round and maybe it’s dammed if you do etc.
Agree with Cat that the social media route was definitely the wrong initial option.

Boris likes the attention . . . unlike the first ministers in Scotland and Wales who made their decisions early he has waited for his big announcement by which time we all knew what he going to say.

At least he combed his hair today 😀

Scotland and Wales still staying at home. Who's going to pay the furlough?
That's a really interesting question. He didn't mention that as you all had to be back at work, he was stopping your furlough payments next weekend, or did I miss that bit? Regarding Wales and Scotland, the North of England needs to be careful playing to London's tune. English R number is down because London is well down the curve. The North, like Wales and Scotland, currently has a higher R number. Are you all aware that the three highest infection rates outside London are all in Cumbrian Health districts? And he has just given the OK for everyone to have a day out in the Lakes.

Is he stopping furlough payments next weekend? I didn’t know that.

Sorry, Lala, it was tongue in cheek. He said everyone had to be back at work, but did not detail how that would be enforced, so I was cheekily speculating as other were speculating that Wales and Scotland would not be supported on a different path

I think he was very vague even about going to work because public transport to get there seems a bit grey.

Who knows, but if you're back in work they'll stop immediately. That's why there is a push for people to get back to work.

I can see another surge in benefit claims as people report for work only to find there's no business to return to.

Boris and the Tories could cure cancer and find a cure for Covid19 and people and some would still find fault. The saying damned if you do damned if you don’t springs to mind.

If you can find any clarity in the statement I'd love you to tell me. Nothing to do with party politics, just that broadcast completely muddied the water.

Go back to work if you can and avoid public transport, drive or walk or cycle. Seems straight forward enough.

I get the train to work as they are still empty. If they were busy, or get busy soon, I would drive.. Simple.

Of course he was vague most of the nation would have been bored off their tits if he would have waffled on for longer that's why it was stated early only that they would be discussing the whole thing in parliament tomorrow.

So going back to the OP, why broadcast?

What should he of said, what do you want him to say.

I walk so not my issue. It made the issue of public transport quite muddied though for those who have no choice but to use it. The trains won’t be empty again if everyone who needs to jumps onboard and your social distancing will become jeopardised.
That was his point, and a valid one, but no clarity or solution was offered.

I wanted him to make major announcements in Parliament and not bypass the process.

I'm not sure what I wanted him to say because I have no idea what he has said. Maybe it's something I'd agree with but there were that many caveats I lost sight of his message.

Maybe that says more about you than him!!

There’s no major announcements to make, be careful and be sensible, go back to work if you can, get plenty of exercise and social distance at all times. When the R comes below an excepted point we will relax a bit more. That’s about the top and bottom of it. That’s where we’re at so what more do you think he could of said.

So spell it out. I guarantee that no two people will have exactly the same understanding of that broadcast.

Seems like there are lots more then 2 people on this thread that agree with the understanding of the broadcast.. Its just you thats confused...

I won't be at all surprised if the 10 o'clock news clarifies driving to exercise to include the word reasonable so the trip to the Lakes will be off.

Let's be honest - he was bounced into saying anything at all because the media are getting in a tizzy about exit strategies. This despite the best part of 500 deaths every day in one setting or another.

However, the vast majority of people are not in favour of a mass relaxation. The vast majority are adjusting their behaviour and maybe being a little less cautious than they were, but not much. In other words, they are applying their common sense and bearing the minority who are selfish idiots with as much good grace as they can muster.

I don't think the Government's communications have been very good, over all. It reflects the fact that our political class, and the people who advise them, are of the weakest calibre in my lifetime. But I thought the kind of nuanced message he was attempting to convey today would have been too much of an ask for anyone. He shouldn't really have felt the need to have a go at it, but there you are.

All this crisis is proving to me is that there are plenty of fuckwits in every walk of our society, which I did suspect already. I must say I have been surprised by the number of people who do pretty mundane things for a living but have apparently been closet epidemiologists all the time....

Sorry Wizaard wasn’t meaning to belittle anyone. Personally I think tonight’s broadcast was aimed at stirring National debate whilst emphasising the basic rules. Common sense should prevail, most have it and will practice it. This is a very fluid situation, the PM has given the people a bit of leeway if they show common sense we’ll move forward, if it’s abused, back to square one. It’s up to us to show maturity, to be fair the great British public have done so far, its easier to take the public with you at a time like this tather than dictate. I hope those politically opposed to this government will take their lead from the leadership of the opposition.. who to be honest has impressed me thus far.

That's fair enough; my concern is that many will abuse that trust and we'll be worse off than we currently are.

I think the government will share your concerns...so the rules will be defined in a clearer fashion after concerns have been expressed by the people...policing by consent .

I'm still unraveling Matt Hancocks stay at home message, unless you live in the isle of wight and then you should still err mmm stay at home

Very true.

He's petrified of being cross examined by someone with a brain following the rogering he got of the new labour leader last week.

You can go to work...bbbbbbb do not go to work
You can use public transport...bbbbbb don't use public transport
You can go outside bbbbb don't go outside
Something or other?
