Why CB didn’t sign, in his own words

Just to kill off the ridiculous / embarrassing comments and speculation. Taken from the press, in case others have not seen the statement. He simply used us to get a better deal at Oxford.

“My contract said that if a club meets the trigger valuation then I am entitled to go and talk to them and I appreciate Oxford allowing me to consider my options

I was flattered to be approached and I have so much respect for that club and wish them well for the future.

But at the same time all I kept thinking about was what we are building at Oxford and how much I owe the club and the fans. I love living in the area, I love playing for the club and in the end I am happy here”

What I don't get then is why he even bothered travelling up? I have been offered two promotions within my company - one would have involved moving to the South East and the other Anglia and I didn't bother following either up for those reasons.

Final word on him from Appleton:

But clearly he must have been offered an incredible contract to stay and play at that level, where the lure of the Championship wasn’t enough to prise him away from a football club I know all too well.”

He added: “The biggest thing for me is that you want players who want to come and play for the football club.

“This is a fantastic football club and I’m aware of that. It’s got an unbelievable and incredibly well-supported group of fans.

“They don’t want to see a footballer coming to this club and not want to play for the club, end of story.

“If we’re going to sign a player that’s going to improve us, we need to make sure we bring in the players who are going to fight for the shirt and give it every single week on the pitch.”

And my agent negotiated a magnificent new contract off the back of it all 👍 😎

Can't argue with that, for everyone that questions his ambition, there is another that could argue his loyalty. Ultimately it has come at a cost to Oxford, with FFP, they've blown a huge chunk of that on 1 player.

Money talks. Done the same. Being head hunted is business - leverage to get loads of money. Clearly what he has done. If Oxford fans buy into his statement then okey dokey.
Move on to better more ambitious players.

Can’t really blame him for opting to stay at Oxford if he’s truly happy. He’s pretty much hero worshipped there and is obviously comfortable playing at that level. And . . let’s face it - without him, Oxford might well struggle to stay in League One. He feels he owes them - which is honourable. Blackpool’s interest, clearly did stir the pockets of the Oxford hierarchy. He’ll now have a hefty pay rise, longish contract (with no release clause) and hasn’t got to faff about moving his family back North. Sounds like a sensible bloke to me. He might live to regret it, but hey, it’s his life and happiness can’t easily be bought. Likewise, Brett Pitman was offered the chance of Premier League football with us, but chose to stay put In a lower league. That’s life.

Really?
Too many bigger clubs with better teams in that league for them to even make a sniff of the play-offs in ny opinion.
They finished 8th last season fading at the end.
They have sold their other "star" player to the dingles and brought in 5 players on free transfers.
Yes deffo play offs

Maybe he wanted to show his club he was willing to move so they would offer what he wanted

Sorry but that’s bullshit (not for posting it)

Let’s be clear any player will move to any other location/club if the money is there to say otherwise is pure bullshit.

Players leave from Monaco to Manchester, Munich to Moscow, Barcelona to Liverpool but do they give 2 shits about the area?

If we would have doubled/trebled Brannagan’s salary he would be in the team tomorrow plain and simple players owe nothing to there parent club it’s a job and they get paid and they are always looking to increase their wages it’s no different to an electrician or a joiner apart from it being a 15 year position.

For the last time there’s no loyalty in football everyone follows the cheque book players and managers alike even assistant managers as we well know.

I'm with you on this Wiz....

I'm not convinced lumping so many eggs into the Brannagan basket will have done them any favours either.
Yes, his big new contract won’t have gone unnoticed by the other players at Oxford. It also makes life difficult for them in the transfer market, as new players will be expecting the same. Slippery slope, they’ve missed out on a big wedge and have a heavy financial burden to carry for 3 years.

So what if we have offered him attractive wages, but Oxford have decided to push the boat out?

Absolutely, the lad couldn’t care less who paid him the biggest salary. I’m just pleased that Pool didn’t break the wage structure for him. Oxford have, and it might come back to bite them.

I’am sure we did offer an attractive wage probably the highest ever offered by the club but at the end of the day if Oxford have offered him something similar he obviously doesn’t think it’s all worth while upping sticks and moving north.

Now had we offered him 3 times the salary (maybe even doubled it) he would have come that’s all I am saying as there is no loyalty in football.

And for the record I’am not suggesting that’s the way to go it isn’t.

Yep.... So we just move on... It happens....Why the big deal?

We've done everything we reasonably could to land the player and, on this occasion, it wasn't enough.....

I'll take that 👍

The big deal is it’s happened three times now not just the once.

I thought lowering our standards and going for someone like Bishop would have worked clearly not.

Maybe we need to look at League 2 or conference levels next?

Plus not every club will be able or willing to do what Oxford did.

Rumoured to be 14k a week.

To get him to move and come here we'd probably have to give at least 15k.

Our top end is maybe 10k.

Suddenly some in our squad are not as happy with their wage, any new players arriving considered to be of similar quality also want that new top end.

Hes a decent player but not worth breaking the structure for.

As said in the other thread the positive is we're willing to spend that much and not all clubs will be able to counter like Oxford have.

Like I said... Loads of clubs will have been knocked back 3 times (and the rest)... Plus the fact is that we knocked back one of the three in any case.

I wouldn't be surprise if we haven't been knocked back (at various stages) by dozens of players this transfer window.that we don't even know about.. That's just how it is...

All that matters is the players that do end up coming here and that we are moving forward.👍

👍 what would our current players hade made of a contract that broke our wage structure.

Oxford have been trying to build something for years, but can't seem to manage the next step up. He may have been sold a vision but I will stick with my thoughts that yesterday's decision will see him play his entire career in the lower leagues, and will be something he ends up regretting if he has loftier ambitions.
