Why do we still have Model T Ford sized parking bays?

Every other time I park up, I struggle to get in and out of my car without having to contort like a bloody limbo dancer. It probably doesn’t help that I’m 6’2” and 20 stone, but even so - car parking bays, in this day and age are way too narrow. Today’s cars in general, are far wider than those of old and getting into and out of them without denting any surrounding vehicle is a challenge - at least for me. I once had a van park up next to me so close, that I was unable to get back into my car - until the daydreaming driver returned. Anyone else experience problems on a regular basis?

I always park away from other cars when shopping. But you can bet that when I return someone as parked tight next to me.
I generally do that, but even then one ** in Tesco parked about 12 inches away. Bad knee and all and I had no chance of even climbing over the other seat. Young couple passing helped and freed up space. My car went round to his drivers side and I parked tight up and went off to Matalan. He was gone when I got back and I still wonder if he's noticed the damage.

Even with my limited mobility issues, and the fact that my sandero at 72 in is 6 in wider than a model t Ford, I've never found a problem being able to get in and out of my car at a parking space

PS - you’re not 5’7” and 9 stone by any chance? That could make a difference.

Just get an electric bike or scooter, they’re faster than driving big cars these days, no tax or insurance, go where you want, through red lights, on pavements, down one way streets the wrong way, drink or do drugs, no problem. Park easily, what’s not to like.

I draw my car parking spaces at 2.5x5m, some still use 2.4x4.8m which is too small.
Did a scheme in Cumbria where the garage sizes were massive to actually fit a car in 😳

I just park right in the middle of two bays. The added benefit is that sometimes some old duffer will say as I get out of the car “you can’t do that!” Or some such shite enabling me to give him the finger and say “Fuck off Grandad“…..makes my day 👍

Also gives me the pleasure of saying to the missus look at that selfish tw@t taking up two spaces.

Agree it's a problem, but the main problem is manufacturers have made all cars bigger. One example, a new model Corsa is now about the same size as an old Astra. Let's face it how many people don't park in their garage (people that have a garage that is) because their modern car simply won't fit in it

Shouldn't let it put you off...

Ah yes but I’d have to do the drug dealing if I got one of those ?

If I was a kid I would have got my parents to buy me one. I would have stuck a box on it for seating and storage.

And for a bonus, if you wear all black Under Armour with the hood up you'll get to know all the local drug users 👍

They’re still stuck with the original car parking space plan from decades ago.

Builders know it, architects know it but once again it’s the “we can put 170 parking spaces into that building” bollox knowing quite well that it should be 150 if people are to get in and out
