Wigan review with Jack Gaughan! INO Pod.

Good pod on the whole, just a bit negative on the transfer stuff for me. It wasn't a perfect transfer window but we have 4 strikers, and plenty of midfielders and defenders. We spent as much as anyone else in the division pretty much, I think. Norburn Joseph Pennington Rhodes Weir Dembele all potentially very good at this level. Morgan has done ok and is young and learning. Kouassi in time could be good. Oakley-B who knows but might be handy back up.

Plus we only lost Yates Anderson Thorniley. The latter two wanted out and Yates wanted and deserved Championship football. We have kept the likes of Grimshaw Lavery Marv Kenny CJ Connolly Gabriel Hubby from the Championship squad. Virtue and Dale have come back better and we may get more than we expect from them. And we are seeing the benefit of the earlier recruitment of Casey, Lyons, Thompson, Carey, Beesley, to varying extents. These should all improve this season.

It's not as shit and unplanned as we often make it out to be. And getting back on track after last season. The team should improve as the season progresses and we have pretty good strength in depth. We need to be a lot better at unpicking the teams that park the bus but players like Rhodes Joseph Dembele Weir offer hope on that score. Width wise we have Gabriel to come back, Thommo rapidly improving, CJ and Dembele, and Lyons.

We lost a load of creativity in not only Yates and Keshi who are both doing well at their new clubs but also the loans in Patino, Bowler and Poveda

We haven't got anything like the above

Weir may be ok but he's more of a box to box player rather than a creative number 10

Yes we haven't got a perfect squad. But we are also not in the Championship now. And we might actually use the players we have effectively this season.

Weir looks quite creative to me and like he has goals in him too. Dembele might be very creative. As might Joseph. There may be more to come from Morgan and Dale. Gabriel, Lyons and Thompson can create stuff from out wide and will likely improve.

I look at other League One teams and don't see huge amounts of creativity. Last time we were in L1 we relied a lot on Keshi and later on Embleton for creativity. We possibly have more now? Once the system improves and players get to know it and each other.

Hopefully Weir will match his goals tally from last season. Double figures from midfield would be a massive boost 👍

I think the squad is ok, very workman like though and lacking in creative options

Play off final / Now

Maxwell / Grim
Turton / Pennington
Ballard
/ Marv or Casey
Husband / Husband
Garbutt / Thommo
Mitchell / Lyons or CJ?
Stewart / Norburn
Dougall / Weir
Anderson / Dembele
Embleton / Joseph
Yates / Rhodes

Just an approx match up. Not a lot in it perhaps, and that's the team that ended the season so strongly.

He's still with us. In spirit at least. His footballing aura has departed his mangled body but still hangs around at Squires Gate, apparently.
Training ground haunted by the spirit of Gaz could probably explain the injuries...

And the formation change on Saturday that nobody understands. I'm sure he was out there, guiding Bees, telling him to put himself about and let the nippy lads go for goals.

The reading keeper is the shit Tyson Fury that Gary nearly killed with that penalty against WBA

In terms of Weir's creativity, I think it was him who played a perfect through ball to Rhodes in the second half to put him 1v1 with the keeper - it was offside, but it seems he can spot, and execute, a pass. Encouraging.

He was excellent Saturday, recovered the ball well and drove the team forward. Suited the formation excellently whilst we got the best from Norburn.

We had too many creative players last season and a weak spine. This season the squad has much better balance.
