Can Critch’s favorited system ever work and make for exciting football or is it just a functional formation which is a tacticians dream.
Maybe, just maybe, we’ll see the players come in over Summer who can fit this system?

Lots of other teams employ this system and play an exiting brand of football. My preference would be a 433 system played the way Olly set us up with enough movement between the midfield and the forward players to confuse even the more established tacticians . Pure fluid football. If Mr Critchley intends to carry on using the current system, then he needs to bring in players who can not just play it, but make it look great !

Absolutely it can. A 343 isn't a defensive boring formation and at times we have played some excellent stuff this season. We need better players though. Most players can have a few good games, the difference between average players and good players is the good ones are consistently good. Ours seem to need all their ducks in a row for them to perform.

The system currently employed simply doesn't seem to work at the moment, that could be down to the players we have, and I do think we have far too many bang average players in the squad, or it could be down to the managers inability or arrogance to change something that isn't working.

That said, goals win games, our current crop of forwards, minus Rhodes, simply don't cut it for me. Football doesn't have to be a complicated game and it is supposed to be entertainment. We need to either play a system that suits our strengths or we need to clear the decks and start again with players that fit the system. Another season of square pegs forced into round holes, just can't be tolerated.

There is nothing wrong with the system, it’s just that Critchley is unable to change or tweak it when required, particularly in-game. Very early this season we became easy to play against. When teams sit in we’re screwed. Our best results / performances have come against teams that want to take us on.

That’s why I say he’s tactically inept.. He’s a rabbit in the headlights in a match situation, unable to compete with the opposition coach. When he makes subs, we continue in the same formation.

Bottom line, you cannot be that rigid. You’ve got to give the opposition something to think about.

How about 442 the same formation that got us promoted last time.sick of all this tip tap possession rubbish with no end product.he was failing with his own ideas first time round until calderwood had a word in his ear and we went 442.he’s not very good when left to his own devices.

Yes but the bigger question is how many different players he needs and if we can actually attact them to the club. I hope Sadler has had a good year because he'll need deep pockets.

Not at our level. In any case, this style is a short-lived fashion among the top teams. Things will change.

1. The squad is lacking quality and flair. We’ve brought in loans, without options to buy. We never built that spine. Quality players are not adequately replaced. There’s been a quality drain these last couple of seasons. Transfer windows are often scattergun - more miss than hit. We sign multiple ‘similar’ players for the same position, then release some the following window. We don’t fill gaping holes in the squad until the season is well underway and points have been squandered.

2. The match tactics are awful. We don’t create space. We prefer defence to attack. The set pieces are dire. There’s a lack of desire or will to win. There’s no closing down. The pace is too slow, in fact, everything’s too slow. Feels like a training match or OAP’s walking football. That’s either down to Critchley, or they completely ignore his instructions most of the time.

It can work but we have two problems, we can't score goals and we dont have any leaders on the pitch, so its not going to work.

I find it interesting that it worked better having inverted wingers as the wide men, rather than the specialist fullbacks we have now.

Given the furore over that at the time, theres an element of be careful what we wish for.

They just don't push on and provide the threat we were doing earlier on.

This is what a coaching website says about the formation.
One of the main benefits of the 3-5-2 formation is its attacking versatility and opportunities to develop link-up play. This is done typically via overloads in the first third, and support in the midfield and attacking lines. Teams can also move the ball quickly to the flanks with higher wing-backs.”

We just don’t have the players for it. Hopefully this is rectified in the summer.

Can't argue with any of that.
