Your 'why did I bother' game

Seems like a weird recurring dream but some time in the mid 80s I seem to recall going to Rotherham (Millmoor in those days) on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, can’t remember which, but with a stonking hangover and we were 4 - 0 down at half time. The full back Mike Walsh scored a consolation in the second half and it finished 4 - 1 (I think)

Too many to list and a lot have already been mentioned.

Blackpool vs Bradford City second leg lost 3-0.

Living in Bradford at the time, it wasn't just a case of we lost, get over it.

Motorway was a joke and I had two years of hell about the result.

Wolves away, might have been 2007

Absolutely freezing, don’t think we had a shot on target all game, lost 2-0, atmosphere was flat and spent most of the game counting the minutes down on the clock

I’d say Birmingham city last season, there loads amount of things gone wrong that day, my coach broke down, the boozers around Sutton Coldfield were dogcrap, the team lost 1-0, the Birmingham police treated us like garbage and me and all other pool fans that were with me had to wait in the ibis hotel until another coach came. Yep definitely my “Why did I bother” type of game.
And it was ** freezing ❄️

Crewe away - we lost 2-0 agsinst 10 men! One of Crewes goals was absolutely unique - the ball hit the inside of the post and the liner flagged for a goal. Ref gave it. No one in the away end could believe it and I've never seen anything like it before or since. Not the crossbar with the ball bouncing down but just hitting the post! I was behind that post and it was never ever a goal. This was the late 80s and we wore a yellow kit that day which I think was the only time we ever wore that particular kit. I think we were sponsored by Bass.

Peterborough away last season under Critch

That Bradford game was an emotional one. My grandad who took my dad & me to games died not long after. We were despondent after that game. My grandad used to talk of the days in the top 2 divisions & the players of old with such passion. I’d only ever known 3rd n 4th tier football.
After the Yeovil win in 2007 I was crying my eyes out thinking of him.
(Having a well up now writing this ha ha)

Right....the first one that sprung to mind was Sheff Wed away in the 78/79 season. It was game 46 of the season and a rearranged fixture on a Thursday night!!! Blackpool Borough RLFC were on the cusp of promotion in the egg chasing, and had a game at Borough Park the same night. Notwithstanding the above, a mate and I went on the one sparsely populated supporters' bus to Hillsborough. It was slashing it down and we stood on the open home end (there wasn't an away section as such, certainly not for the less than 50 Blackpool fans who had made the trip). Soaked through from start to finish, a David Hockaday effort which hit the bar was the only crumb of comfort in a night that had us wet through from head to toe.

Early seventies, boxing day away to Carlisle.
Interrupted a blissful family Christmas to go to the game. You can’t get those precious moments back 😮‍💨.
Coach broke down on the motorway.
Missed most of the game, got into the ground literally just in time to see Carlisle score the only goal of the game.
Never looked like equalising and a long and dismal journey home 🙄. Football Bloody Hell!

God, I went to every home and the majority of away games from 1990-2003 so it's easier to note the times I didn't feel that emotion.

The thought of the rain soaked terrace at Saltergate alone gives me nightmares.

Rotherham away in 2004ish, same as a poster above, we were gash and lost 4-0.

Mansfield away under McMahon, also lost 4-0, we never had a shot. Car broke down on the way back too.

Yeovil 2013.

Flying high in the league against rock bottom. Lost 1-0 and had 3 players sent off.

All on a Tuesday night!
The only good thing about that night was to see a very famous London based poster get absolutely smashed on Rocking Robin. No names etc etc etc.

Oxford away 1979. Lad I worked with at norcross suggested we took half a day's leave & go.
Another pissing it down evening. My new kecks suddenly turned into itchy from hell when wet. Late goal defeat & the pleasure of back to work after arriving back in the early hours. Absolute dogshit.

Wolves away in the Premier League season was rubbish. Bottom row of the stand, by the corner flag. Had a great view of Adam Hammill’s boots every-time he took a corner (they dominated from set plays that day). DJ sent off and got smashed 4-0. Missed their 4th goal. Waste of time.
