Disappointing today yes but also a littled bit puzzled.
I learned a couple of weeks back that you can now play 3 over age players (limited to 19s I think).
I can understand the reason for this when players miss a season in their final scholarship season (like Bange and Adwarka have done recently) and it also gives an opportunity to 1st year pros to get the odd game if their Club doesn't have any older age group teams.
Of course for every older player that plays it denies the chance to a younger one.
Swings and roundabouts possibly.
Another point to make is that Academies are to there to develop players and they will probably tell you it isn't all about winning. I'd say losing isn't a good habit to get into.
I know I've been away for a while but there was certainly one trialist playing today who was o/18 and had been released by another academy. There were 2 names in the starting 11 I'd never heard of so I'm guessing there was the other might have been a trialist as well.
Also starting today was Matthew Liptrott, who was last years u/18 captain, but released without a contract.
I'm not sure if he was effectively another trialist.
So all in all it looked like a bit of a mix and match team and ended up playing like one.
Whilst I don't know Salford looked like that had a couple of over-age players as well.
Physically there were a lot bigger and stronger than Pool.
As for the game, I missed the first goals, due to the M60 being a car park, but after that the teams were fairly evenly matched with Pool just having the edge possession wise for the remainder of the half.
As for the style of play we look to play the same possession based football that the first team do, playing out from the back, inside out wingers (although we changed that 2nd half) but we had a RB, Jack Moore, playing at LB and a RB who I think is possibly a CB.
If I was to give a MOM I'd probably give it to James Harrison. Prince Yelegon looked lively when he came on as did first year pro John Johnston although the latter should have grabbed a consolation goal at the end.
Partington is Salford City's 1st team's training ground.
You pass Carrington on the way which is now home to Stockport County and Sale Sharks.
