Akinfenwa claims "Fleetwood representative" made racially insensitive comments

Again, I think you are blatantly using obvious racist words to over emphasise your point. Stick to the words used eh. I tend to see it from Peels pov with regards to his first para. And as I say my initial thought was to think it racist and it still is. But like I said I don't believe he did his cause any good by his earlier tweet and so to a certain degree there is a bit of hypocrisy from him. Again, that said he has to be applauded for the way he has brought this to the medias attention and his aim of trying not to confront head on but openly discuss the matter in a calm manner.

I used a far worse and more blatant example as an analogy to explain the logic re why AA posting that picture doesn't change anything. If I stuck to the words used, it wouldn't be a comparison. I hope you don't think my point was to make the actual incident seem worse by association.

Think there's only circles to go around in from here gents, have a lovely weekend, UTP.

Utter madness. The comment was obviously based on his size, not his skin colour.
Maybe we shouldn’t speak to him or write about him, converse in any way, if he’s so easily offended? About time we started to knock this crap in the head and not give it the time of day, otherwise it just perpetuates the problem.

Unbelievable that some do not see a distinction between AA posting a picture of a buffalo and an opposition professional repeatedly using it to refer to him throughout the game. If he said "I'm strong as a gorilla" and the next day somebody called him a monkey, that person would still massively be in the wrong.

I imagine you are the same people who say 'well why can't I use the n-word if 50 cent does?'

20s 'he didn't help his cause by doing it did he?' when he posted the picture I'm sure he wasn't expecting to be referred to as a fat buffalo repeatedly in one of the biggest games of his life six months later. I respect your points most of the time mate, as I assume you mostly like to play devil's advocate given that you always take an extreme side in every single debate on here, but that is *weak*.
So if you are the “correct” colour some words are ok?

Of course it was down to his size. Its almost a badge on honour and a feeling of being morally superior to try and find the racist connection no matter how ambiguous.

You explained it perfectly well and it made sense. If you want an argument, you can find one on this forum.

You genuinely think that racism can be stopped by people ignoring it? Can't say that plan has worked too well to date.

Repeatedly calling it out however, might make some consider their language and the impact of that, a little more carefully.

Maybe I'm as thick skinned as a water buffalo but I've never really got this being offended by name calling shit. I worked the doors in this town for 17 years and if I had a tenner for every time someone called me an derogatory name I'd be a very rich man, pissed up clowns would call me every name under the sun for refusing them entry to a club and all I'd say was "so ** what", as long as you don't invade my personal space or raise your hands to me, you can call me what you like lad"

This isn’t about racism. It’s more like sizeism. If we are forever considering every little thing we say, nothing will ever get said, and that would be worse. Making out that things are to do with race, that clearly aren’t. Heightened environment at the moment where things are being taken the wrong way. Everyone is angry and on edge.

Of course it has racist connotations. Otherwise why not say fat bastard, fat tvvat, whatever.... Still offensive but a standard insult.

To use the term water buffalo, suggests some deeper thinking triggered by his skin colour or origins.

How people can't see it is beyond me.. Or is that they do really???
Remarkable amount of people seem very afraid of equality..

While there's people like West Paddock Ultra Gammon around I fear for the future sadly.

Perhaps "this deeper thinking" was triggered by Akinfenwa's tweet depicting himself as a buffalo.

Pure and simple - He was called `water buffalo' because he is big and immobile (like a water buffalo).
And Im sure Fleetwood will have black players/staff. So they're hardly likely to be shouting it, if they thought it had racist connotations.

As I have said before it seems to be ok to say "who ate all the pies" but if you say "who ate all the bananas" then you are in a world of trouble...

My point is that there has always been all kinds of abuse and discrimination at football and all of a sudden its rightly all off limits for racial discrimination but the poor old fat guy can still be abused at will...ALL discrimination should be addressed...Fat lives matter...bespectacled fans also get abuse and discrimination...unfortunately I fit in both categories

ok Im just being facetious😄

No.
Because he isn’t fat. He’s a big, stocky unit, hence the original comparison - and it’s something he’s compared himself to previously (as proved above).
He’s not made a career out of being a lightening fast winger, or even an F1 driver. He’s a big fcuking unit. And he knows it. He’s made a football career out of it. Now for some reason he thinks it’s all about race. Horseshoite.

20's...Say someone had a picture and used it with no motive apart from using it in the context it was meant......and then later when it was used/seen again....It was now out of context...but to many it means something totally different.
Would you not agree that that first picture should be seen for what it is.....and shouldn't have any affect on peoples view?

100% it was 20togo, Puma, if someone tweets a photo of himself and insinuates he's the water buffalo, he can't then start getting ratty over being called a water buffalo., if he'd tweeted a photo of a white rhino, I'm sure he'd have been called a white rhino. Race has absolutely f@ck all to do with it.

Look, I think my views are somewhere in the middle here. First I'll say before this incident I had never knew that the term [water] buffalo was a racist term. But knowing what I know now, yep there was I believe a bit of racist intent from the FTFC official or whoever used it.
With regard to your first comment, what context do you think Akinfenwa was using the picture so what exactly am I seeing the picture for what it is?
That's why imo I don't think Akinfenwa helped himself with his tweet, I really don't. For instance he's referring the other player in the picture as a lion which without being racist matches the colour of the guys skin. So for instance, if the other player at the time of that celebration had been a white guy would he first have posted the tweet and second referred to him as a lion. I don't. know.
I'm not sure what else I can say except to say that I applaud AKinfenwa in the manner he's raised the issue which in a way is by trying to cause the minimum of fuss about it.
I'm out for the day shortly so I'll pick up on anything later.
Just to add, I could easily be offended by you "liking" fy8's post calling me a cnut but hey no matter..

There is an obvious show of what peoples views on discrimination are on this thread. It's a painful and sorry read.

I suppose the fact that the average posting age is late 50's early 60's gives me hope for the future mind.
Well said Mac. This site is depressing. It's full of comments by people who are clearly racially prejudiced but pretend they are not. In the absence of football its shown some true colours.

Who are you to be Judge and jury and define what the guy was referring to.
Akinfenwa was the ** that posted the twit comparing himself to a water buffalo but someone else uses that comparison becomes a racist! Absolutely unbelievable

Totally agree.
So It’s ok for him to refer to himself as a water Buffalo (previous tweet) but when others use the term it’s racist.
Yer ok. 🙄

Yes it is. It's the same as gay people calling themselves queer. It's a reclamation of terminology. Doesn't make it right for anyone else to do it.

Nope not agreeing with that.
Clearly wanting publicity in the current climate.
Just look at the number of posts on this thread.

Could be v difficult for Fleetwood this one. Current climate. EFL may make an example of them if found proven. Deterrent sentence could be on the horizon.
I dont know what powers the EFL have in this situation but if found to be someone connected to the club at a professional level could be huge fine /points deduction.
It wont blow over. Football cant allow that to happen. However a full investigation will reveal the facts. Uphill battle i fear for FTFC

Haha! A black bloke speaks honestly about his experiences as a black bloke, and Jaffa The Hut on AVFTT dismisses his account because of the number of posts on an AVFTT thread.

AVFTT is not the world. Good job. I'd hate the world to have such a large population of middle aged white blokes who can't think.

So did it reach outside AVFTT world?
It’s only got so many replies on here because it involves Fleetwood FC any other team and no one would have bothered even mentioning it which really tells you all you need to know.

Page 1 of a google search tells me it's been reported by the Mail, Guardian, Sun, Telegraph, Sky Sports, BBC and Talksport.

There's a whole internet out there, and a big, wide world beyond that 😄

That's just Blackpool fans going on those sites to find stuff to diss Fleetwood🤣🤣

Don’t take in all you read in newspapers.
Even Lewis Hamilton’s rant made the papers just because 6 fellow drivers didn’t take the knee last week in Austria some of the papers even suggesting it was racist stance not to do so, what a load of horse manure.

Righto 👍

Still waiting for some explanation of when ‘buffalo’ became a racist word, to file alongside the likes of blackboard for the easily offended.

I’ve re-read his words. If the first thing that comes into his mind when ‘water buffalo’ is used, especially preceded with the adjective ’fat’, then I’m sure the opposition player didn’t intend it that way.

There is no credibility in this thread when old, white, a bit "don't like foreigners" types are saying a black man feeling deeply offended has no right to feel upset.

Amazed this thread is still here. .

Well maybe, just maybe, the said black man should not tweet a photo of a water buffalo and insinuate he is in fact just like the said water buffalo.

What the water buffalo has got to do with the colour of his skin God only knows.

Insulting? Yes, but he started it in the first place and footballers and sportsmen in general have been insulting each other forever.

Cricketers call it sledging, the Aussies are masters of it.

Racist? Don't be so ridiculous, the insult has no connection to skin colour, but every connection to his weight and size.

Apparently it's ok to insult someone who is fat, thin, tall, small or even ginger, but you bring any connotation of race in to it no matter how tiny the connection might be and it becomes a totally different story.

Grayth, nobody is justifying anything, what is being said is that you cannot moan when you post a picture of something insinuating you are the said thing and complain when somebody calls it you.

Like I said the connection has everything to do with the water buffalo's weight and size and nothing to do with colour.

If Akinfenwa was white there wouldn't be any of this shit and frankly the use of the race card is now pissing everyone off.

Jaffa,

To be fair there are plenty on here who like to turn anything into a race issue if they possibly can and they'd do so whether it involved the cods or not.

Their latest move is that you are racist because you don't spend half your life on here supporting anti racism issues and movements with links to anti racism like the BLM.

According to them if you haven't condoned something it means you support it - I am allowed to say nowt as queer as folk ?

Interesting how some have really latched onto this photo. "Yessss, a black guy has done something that I can use to justify racism for a bit longer."
Bollocks. Racism is abhorrent, but this ain’t racism.
He even calls himself “The Beast.”

Spot on, that exactly what I'm saying, there's too many jerks out there who seem to try to make anything they see have racial connotation's so they can be a hero and go 'Ooh look at me being holier than thou and I'm a complete hero"

Interesting that it makes you feel that way.
