Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Colin Calderwood as an Assistant Head Coach.

The vastly experienced 55-year-old becomes another valuable addition to Neil Critchley’s coaching staff at Bloomfield Road.

Promoted four times as a player with Swindon Town, a team he captained from a young age, Calderwood also represented the likes of Mansfield Town, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa during his playing career, as well as Scotland internationally.

Upon retirement, Calderwood returned to Tottenham in a coaching role, before guiding both Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest to promotions as a manager.

A further promotion then followed as an assistant to Chris Hughton at Newcastle United in 2010, with the pair going on to work together at Birmingham City, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

In recent years, Calderwood has also been an assistant to Steve Bruce at Aston Villa and had a stint managing Cambridge United in Sky Bet League Two.

Neil Critchley said:

“I’m pleased to welcome Colin to the Club. Colin’s experience and achievements in the game speak for themselves. We feel he has the perfect qualities to both complement and enhance the existing staff we have in place here at Blackpool.”

Colin Calderwood added:

“I’m absolutely delighted to join Blackpool. I’ve seen a lot of the division now because I’ve been scouting for a team in League One.

“I’m looking forward to working with Neil and the rest of the staff. I’ll be there to aid and assist in the best way possible and use my good experiences of football to help everybody within the Club.”

Puzzling why it didn't happen in the summer, but it's a very good appointment and what we have been clearly missing. Hopefully, he and Critch will make a good partnership.

Struggling to see any negatives with this. Experience, leadership, track record - all the things we've been lacking.

Wonder how long this has been on the cards or whether its a direct reaction to the last week or so.

I can imagine he wasn't, nor should he have been. I've said numerous times to get someone in and XXXXXX NC's feelings about it. BFC needs it.

Let's hope CC isn't a token appt.
It'll be interesting to see Critch's demeanor in interviews after this appointment.....

I'd be surprised if Calderwood is the kind of guy to accept a job that was anything other than a 100% all in role.

The next month is going to be very interesting.

Good luck to CC and NC- let's get this season on track. Note no 'back on' required.

Excellent appointment and in recognition that NC needs experience to support not only himself but the team. SS has moved quickly to make this appointment l assume to stop the rot and get the team back to winning ways.

This appointment might now enable Critch to get on with what he is best at doing, actually coaching.
Calderwood, far more experienced in the "management" side of the role may be able to take up those reigns and strike a balance.

I'm as chuffed as a dog with two dicks with this appointment - a very experienced nr 2. Well done SS
NC needed experienced help, and it has arrived relatively quickly

I'm not at the "we're going up as champions" stage quite yet, but I am feeling much more positive - the beer will taste sweeter tonight!

Not sure SS has moved quickly. The opposite in fact. Should have been done in July.

Welcome CC

On paper this looks Avery good appointment, adding real experience at this level to a very theoretical coaching team

Onwards and upwards

Anybody know what his last job was because it didnt last long? He was expected to join up with Chris Houghton again 3 weeks ago at Forest but he had already accepted a job opportunity that week but i cant remember what it was now.
Im happy he's here, we need that bit of experience.

Is this undermining critchley
hey I am glad Colin is here and much needed , My opinion
but like I said , was he forced or is it Neil’s choice

On paper that could be a perfect appointment, could allow Critchley some freedom at what he does best and the nitty gritty League One stuff will be handled by Calderwood (whilst teaching Critchley at the same time).

Would be interested to hear how this all came about though. As others have said, I wonder if Critchley has basically been told rather than asked?

I believe we cant use the term "Nitty Gritty" anymore 🧐....

Any football man would rather be an assistant head coach rather than a scout.
Prestige wise and wage wise I would bet my bottom dollar.

Great news, fingers crossed it works out well for all concerned.

Mr Sadler seems determined to give Crich every possible chance of making this work, I think we all hope it does

Err....not so sure about that. Possibly about BM saving his job, perhaps.
