Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce that Neil Critchley has agreed to become Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season.

One of only 16 coaches in the country to have gained the highest possible qualification in the game, the 41-year-old joins the Club from reigning UEFA Champions League holders Liverpool, where he has held the position of Under-23s coach.

Having served in that role since 2017, on the back of four years as Under-18s coach, Critchley has helped develop some of Liverpool’s brightest young talents and internationals.

This season, he has also taken charge of the Reds in a Carabao Cup quarter-final and Emirates FA Cup tie, guiding a young side to the fifth round stage of the latter.

Born in Crewe, Critchley was Academy Director at his hometown club for six years between 2007 and 2013.

Owner Simon Sadler said:

“I would like to welcome Neil as he joins us on our journey and thank Liverpool for the way they have handled our approach. The fact that we’ve been able to attract a coach of Neil’s calibre is testament to how this Club is now viewed and is a result of the work that has been done here over recent months.

“Neil is a highly-regarded coach who impressed us with his thorough preparation and analysis of the team. We want this Club to represent the town and community by playing entertaining football, working hard and being organised. We firmly believe that Neil can deliver this and lay down the blueprint for our footballing philosophy.

“Finally, I would like to thank Brett, Linton and, particularly, Ben for their hard work during this process and a special thanks to David Dunn and Tommy Johnson for stepping up on an interim basis to take charge of the team.”

Chief Executive Ben Mansford said:

“I am delighted to welcome Neil to Blackpool FC. Neil is one of the most talented coaches in the country and comes with a wealth of experience. From starting his coaching journey, to taking the Liverpool team this season, Neil has committed his professional life to becoming the best.

“When you combine his time spent at Crewe, which ultimately saw him become Academy Director and where the target was to develop individuals, with his seven years at Liverpool, the last three of which were spent with their highly regarded Under-23s, where the team was supreme, I feel we have a stand out person to lead Blackpool forwards with our own aims of returning to the Championship and beyond.

“On top of his coaching credentials, Neil is also a great person who is regarded as being a man of real integrity. I can’t wait for Neil to get started and I am looking forward to working with him closely.”

Head Coach Neil Critchley added:

“I am absolutely delighted to join Blackpool. The trust and faith that has been shown in me from Simon and Ben gives me a very special feeling inside. I can’t wait to get started, I’m really looking forward to the weeks and months ahead, meeting the players, working on the grass, developing the team and meeting some of the supporters.

“The time I’ve had at Liverpool has been truly special. I’ve been incredibly well supported there from Alex Inglethorpe, the Academy Manager, and all the staff. It’s a truly special football club and it’s the people that make the football club the place that it is. It would have had to have taken something equally as special, if not more, for me to even think about leaving.

“But from the conversations I’ve had here, I got a really good feeling about the people, where they want the Club to go and how they want it to grow.”

Not my first choice (barely heard of him) but it’s up to the fans to get behind him and the team for the rest of the season and beyond

Champions League next 👍😉 Welcome to the Gold Coast Neil. Just hope his name fits in with The Tangerine Army chant.

I can live with this. Seems to be the way the club wants to go with this Head Coach jobby so let’s hope it works out. Welcome Neil

Can someone provide clarity over "One of only 16 coaches in the country to have gained the highest possible qualification in the game"?

Because if they're talking about the UEFA Pro License, there are considerably more than 16 people who have it.

Happy with this, looks a very promising appointment. Lets hope he can tap into the Liverpool youth system in terms of loanees.

Someone explain to me please 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
first Evatt could of done this , got more experience in manger with barrow
( please remember I said not yet for evatt as no experience)

so are we going to be a selling club now , sign young players on loan or permanent, then sell as a large fee , that’s business sense , to Simon not to us fans

simon said wanted experience coach or manger , someone who is also young , so where is he , young yes , but experience 🧐 🤷‍♂️
he has had two games as a main manger , that’s it , not even played the game , only couple of matches with Crewe

let’s hope I am proved wrong , I will support him , but this dosnt make sense to me , sorry 😐

He fits the mould of Head Coach perfectly.

They haven't appointed a manager.

Presumably Evatt would have wanted a more traditional managers role with more say than just taking training and picking the team.

He has the Elite License

Welcome Neil, the fans will get behind you. Let's back Neil for the rest of the season and see what he can do in the transfer window.

He comes with no baggage or whiff of failure. Whilst I would have loved to have seen Evatt appointed, the board, for whatever reason didn't want him at this point. Critchley is highly rated and has an impressive record with Liverpool's U18s and U23s, the big challenge is now being the First Team Head Coach but one we all need to get behind him and his new coaching team.

Hopefully Dunn and Johnson stay, a special word for Dunn who has worked wonders lifting spirits, getting us playing with a bit more freedom and handing back the reins after 2 excellent wins.

he is an experienced COACH ... that's his job description; Head Coach. Not 'Manager' 🙄

Im confused. So are we still getting a manager? Is he in a similar role as Steve Thompson was?

Good appointment - positive and shows ambition
Evatt was not my choice as was based on sentimentality- great servant to our club but this guy has a solid background and will want to prove himself

Unless Blackpool can sustain 2 or 3 seasons in the premier league unfortunately that is how lower league clubs survive, I dont think that plan and it is a business plan, is wrong, Sadler is not someone who wants to invest in something to lose, he is A true blackpool fan, we have to support it whole heartedly!!! Utmp !!!

Steve Thompson was Larry's assistant.

As i understand it Critchley will oversee all training, dictate our style of play etc etc but will not have as much of a hands on approach with transfers etc as a more traditional 'manager' would.

It fits in with the vision Simon has. Hopefully it will benefit our academy and attract good quality youngsters to Bloomfield Rd as well as the obvious link to Liverpool's own academy.
I'll hazard a guess we'll follow this up with an announcement on the training ground before Sadler returns to Hong Kong.

Can't say I'm overwhelmed here, but then again it's hard to know what to say as he's obviously an unknown quantity. As said on the other site, the only thing i know for sure is that working at Blackpool will be a million miles from working with Liverpool U 23's.

Happy with this , shows its really been thought through rather than just opt for the easy Populist view of Evatt etc . Whilst Evatt would've whipped up fans fervour I think he isn't quite the quality of coach that Critchley is (yet) .

Im pleased with this and it shows intent,he will have great contacts in the game and hopefully he will get us playing an entertaining style. He really could be the one to take us back to the Premier League

Excited about this appointment. Although little is known about him he does appear respected in particular by Liverpool. We clearly could not get Robinson whom would have been an wonderful appointment but this could be the manager whom can give us stability and take us to the next level. He cannot be any worse than Grayson.

Liverpool fans gutted to be losing him which is positive. Would much rather have someone him than someone Like warnock who just go from club to club.

Welcome Neil to our wonderful club.

He will obviously been told of our training ground plans but I would love to see his face when he gets to squires gate!!

Good to see he mentioned the supporters - although ironic he mentioned 'some' when contact between club and fans nowadays seems to be restricted to 'some'!

i know he is a head coach 🙄
so does this mean then , he has no say in signings , he will coach what he gets given or has
tommy Johnston is head of recruitment , so he buys the players

where mangers control everything

Head coach is the norm nowadays so im not bothered about him being a head coach. Have to say Evatt was who I wanted and who I would have taken a gamble on if we were going for no real experience but this guy seems to be a decent gamble too so im happy to go with it.

Promising appointment this and am sure he will want us to play the right way. Sure he will be able to convince some of the young lads at Liverpool who are not going to make it there to come and make the gold coast their new home.

I’d imagine it would be something like this: https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spo...w-liverpools-transfer-committee-went-16479508

The idea that there’s a binary choice between the 1970s model of ‘manager scouts, identifies and buys’ and ‘coach just turns up and trains whatever player the directors have decided to sign’ is silly

He is very highly regarded at Liverpool. Klopp rates him and the u23 have played an attractive game. I have seen them a few times and have heard very good things from contacts within the Academy who know what they are talking about.
If he brings Yasser with him, French left wing back, that would be very good. He’s a future international...

for me this is the way forward - a coach who trains and develops the players, identifies what is needed and has a management team around him to support him. Too many clubs rehash the same managers (Moyes, Grayson) who don't actually look at the structure of the team at all levels and develop from the bottom up.

The guy is schooled under Klopp - that will do for me 😎 👍
I agree. If only a little bit of Klopp's influence has rubbed off on him, this could be an good appointment. And if he does adopt the same style of play as Klopp, then it certainly isn't going to be dull.
