OT Corona Virus/Flu Some Perspective?

Why don't media/government publish standard Flu infections, deaths etc?, to give us some perspective??

After all this virus is just a flu variant to all intents & purposes isn't it?

No it isn't.

The death rate for flu is 0.1%. Covid-19 is anywhere between 10 times and 60 times more deadly (1%-6%).

And no-one on earth is immune to it.

The issue we have to worry about is if it overwhelms the health service. Everyone who need critical treatment is buggered (strokes/ heart attacks/ car crashes/etc) because there's no ICU beds.

Fun fact: Italy has twice as many ICU beds per person than the UK.

Exactly, and to keep hearing people say it's just flu.... FFS... really do people think countries just shut down the way they have over just the flu.

It's almost as bad as people who say lock down now and have it come right back again in a few months or overwhelm us in winter.

There is no perfect solution to this. A vaccine in years away sadly and imagine the demand.

A vaccine in years away sadly and imagine the demand.

A vaccine is already being tested on humans, it could be ready as early next year if not by the middle. That's still a long time but I'm sure there will be all the drug companies producing it at the behest of governments.

It's a serious virus and apart from the death toll, the economic damage is going to be staggering.

Hopefully everyone that thinks it's just a flu catches it first.
Then they'll be able to tell us all about it.

Unless they die. Won't that be ironic.

Totally agree ... ! But more and more of us are becoming aware of family and friends with it, so unfortunately karma awaits the idiots who think it's just flu or people who are joking about it..

Until it happens to them, or a loved one, some people will keep thinking it's a joke.

Would countries really be taking it so serious, and all this commotion be happening over nothing.

People saying oh we survived bird flu etc.... Good for you. I don't remember being this much panic that countries have a complete meltdown over it...

These will be the same people who scream blue murder over Facebook when they are slightly inconvenienced in any way, yet are thinking this isn't anything major.

"Only 10 have died so far..... you're more likely to get eaten by a shark" 🙄

FFS. It's like listening to a load of half cut people in the boozer.

"My mates got it ... dropped dead in half a day" ....

"Bloke next door got it ... ran a marathon next day" ...

Just follow Klopps lead. Don't guess or spout on about things you know fuck all about.
Find an expert you trust and listen to what they are saying. There's plenty of educated and rational advice and opinion out there.

Number of UK deaths doubled in last 24 hours and confirmed cases up by 340.
Northern Ireland has just announced closure of schools for at least 16 weeks

As it stands Italy and the U.K. are experiencing 50% mortality based upon cases that are considered closed. THAT is a very sobering fact, despite the assumption that numbers who have contracted is much larger than reported and a certain amount of recovery time lag.

looking at the numbers we are only two weeks behind Italy and without drastic action out NHS will be totally overwhelmed and many thousands of British people will perish.

Take it seriously folks... it’s no joke !

I think the biggest problem with working out statistics is that we have no idea how many people actually have the virus.
Latest figures are:
Confirmed cases in the UK has reached 1,140,
37,746 people have been tested.
21 people have died, which is about 2%
That's alot of people tested negatively but what kind of symptons are all these people displaying?
HOWEVER the government estimates that maybe as many as 10,000 people actually have the virus so if only 21 have died then that's only 0.2% which is slightly more re-assuring.

Bifster. Sorry for being thick but I don't understand the following bit of your last post.
"As it stands Italy and the U.K. are experiencing 50% mortality based upon cases that are considered closed."
Edit you replied as I was typing this.

The deaths so far, in the UK at least, all seem to be elderly with underlying health issues.
I find it puzzling that these unfortunate people have been exposed to the virus but I can see that if there immunity is low then it would be easier for them to contract.
At the other end of the spectrum have I read about people that have some built in immunity or am I making this up?

Definitely take it seriously, my 14yr old and Pool fan may have it. Started with a cough yesterday and in 24hrs has a temp of 38.8c and increasing. Never seen him this ill. Of course we won’t know, because there is no testing of non-hospital cases, which rather makes the daily data useless.

Hoping he’s not got it, as it will no doubt hit me and Mrs TT.

The way we are heading, more countries are going to close borders/airports.... where will it all end?

I have a skiing holiday in Canada in April...... the airport, (Vancouver) is till open along with the resort (Whistler) & the airline is still flying there (Lufthansa)... but for how long...???

Although not in the age range deemed most at risk due to my circumstances I have a flu jab every year so i am safe from that.
This seems super contagious and far more dangerous than the flu.
The most worrying thing is that people without symptoms are passing it on. Read a story in states where 40% of people at a party got it even though no one had symptoms.
I am worried. Everybody should be.
If everyone who gets it passes it on to 2 to 3 people as seems to be average it will continue to spiral.

So If you do that you will likely even if not directly through passing it along the chain hold some responsibility for people dying.
So are you are ok with that?

Many will die,

Too many selfish people around with an 'Im alright Jack' attitude.

If you fit into that camp. Hope you are happy with yourselves & no one close to you suffers..

Timpers. That really is awful news. Lets hope you are all Ok.
I assume you are all self isolating?
Get well soon, the thoughts of all the Insider family are with you.

we are all worried, but we have still to work, go to the shops etc... how do we be MORE responsible?? I'm trying my best?

I think you would have had to have had exposure to the virus to have any immunity Insider? There will be very few of us with any antibodies to protect us which is the problem really on a number of levels.
I guess some of us will have more robust immune responses, and the ‘at risk’ groups probably in general likely to have weaker immune systems?

I know its difficult All you can do really is follow hygiene procedures & responsibly cut down on social contact especially larger gatherings.
Work from home if you can. Only go shopping when you actually need stuff . In recent years for too many shopping has become a form of social entertainment.
We have been pampered for far too long.

There is plenty of food so no need to panic but perhaps buy for a week if you can so you dont need to keep going & waste less.
Be thankful you are not living in more unfortunate places or the planet such as Syria or parts of Africa people wont starve.

I know we have our problems but lets be honest most in the UK can stay at home with more than enough food & watch netflix.

If the missus bollocks you for forgetting the hummus erm maybe tell her to deal with it rather than rushing back to the store 🤪

Heard anecdotally of a company meeting in Boston where 80 people attended, 40 subsequently tested positive. This was from someone in the know not someone down the pub.

El B🙁 Thats scary Yes to me the most worrying thing is the ease with which it seems to be passed on.

Been in Poulton this afternoon, Costa, Thyme and The Elk were all very busy.

If this thing is as infectious as claimed, and the symptoms don't appear until days after people begin getting infectious, the number round here could be staggering very soon.

Sorry I think people such as yourself are really not getting it at all. With the greatest respect, balls to your skiing holiday. It does not register anywhere on the Richter scale of misfortune right now.

It worries me that people aren't getting it and I wonder what it is going to take. Here in Holland the situation is nuts, nobody cares at all. Had a situation at work where I had to talk to some military police and they both went to shake my hand after. The high street in my village was jam packed today like any other Saturday and full of elderly like any other Saturday. The train to work, jam packed with people over 60, and it goes through Schiphol so lots of tourists getting on everyday. Today I watched a whole queue of people all run their hands across the handle of a door that was already open, just force of habit.

It's sort of like when you're in the relegation zone by 25 points and somebody says 'well it's still mathematically possible we could stay up'. That's the hope most European governments seem to be clinging to, and as long as any government has the wrong attitude there will of course be lots of people willing to take that side of the story just for peace of mind, rather than inform themselves and look around the bull.

The fact is, if everybody was educated and consistent, then it actually would not be so bad ultimately. But people are burying their heads in the sand so there is no chance it's getting better any time soon. Unless by miracle.

Nope not balls to my ski trip... its important to me... & Im still going..

Apparently the safest place to sit Lime is at the back near the window (unless the toilet is at the back in which case it isn’t). More dangerous in the terminal than on the plane though apparently.

Bloke just rang in to 5live on their scare talk in. He is coughing and has a temperature but has an asthmatic wife and 5 kids with various conditions. When told by the expert to self isolate he replied "You can't not hug your kids or sleep with your wife for a week".

Why ring in then? Selfish idiot.

When you take in to account the fact that a significant number of Americans can't afford to have tests (and subsequently any required healthcare), coupled with a high percentage of them being clinically obese, the fallout over there could be far greater than in the UK or even Italy.

So much for it being a Democratic hoax.

The over 65s should be protected.
Can't see how shutting schools helps, better to tell kids not to see their Grandparents for a few weeks.

Scary reading that is. Personally I think our "experts" have got it wrong with this "herd immunity" approach and I think in the coming weeks this will be proven to be a huge mistake. Hope I'm wrong

New Zealand have done the right thing, closed down completely, no flights or cruise ships allowed in. That’s the way to protect your people and we’re an island, it couldn’t be easier. Anyone coming back to the U.K. to have 14 days quarantine.

I’m in Sydney at the moment due back on 28th, been trying to change my flight with Etihad to get back earlier, but just can’t contact them. When I try to change online it refers me to a phone number which I’ve been ringing since Friday morning without anyone answering. I hung on two and a quarter hours last time. Also tried emailing every Etihad email address I can find and don’t get any reply, it’s a joke.

Most people think our so called 'experts' have got it wrong with the 'herd immunity' nonsense Bennys. The real experts say immunity can only happen if 40m Brits are infected first. The real experts are the Chinese, who seem to be getting on top of the problem. They say only two rules to follow: diagnose early and quarantine.

Wtf do you know?..what if it comes back in China twice as strong next year because they have taken this action and have no immunity.....you are just spouting pal.....or are you a scientist or Doctor?

People are still flying into the UK from Italy without so much as having their temperatures taken.
