Ipswich Town v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 06.02.21

We were undoubtedly piss poor today. Simple as that. No one played well. No need for hysterics, or 'I told you so's'. This team is a work in progress and it's far too soon to get carried away eyeing the play offs. Lot's of improvement across the season, but far too many below par performances today. Also we have too many weak links currently.

Still, plenty of time to continue developing this season and address the problems before the next one. Onwards and upwards.
? Improvements really? He’s had more backing than pretty much every team in the division and I don’t see any signs of improvement. We were crap on Tuesday night as well by the way.

When you've quite finished kids...sit yourselves in the analysts chair and, when you've won the EUFA and FA cups played for England and captained it...I'll be ready to listen.
I don't think you need to have played the game at the highest level to know that is plain daft. With that logic only the best player of all time would be able to offer a valid opinion, and anyone lesser than them's opinion would be invalid.

I appreciate that Dave...just trying to prick TNO. I thought Mills was good. It's their home channel, but he was quite balanced considering.

They were also a young side on a heavy pitch.. I think that played a part. Also why Gabriel stood out. Great athlete. Possibly getting Simms and Mitchel on earlier might have upped the intensity a little

The Ipswich defence wasn't great. If we'd have put a close midfield four press on them, playing it quickly wide then quickly into Yates and Simms, we might have got something.

first half thought we were a match for them, and we were unlucky to go a goal down. but it was a well taken goal and played on the vulnerabilities that we have at left back, and to some extent thorniley who are often turned by strikers and wingers.

second half they came out with much more bite to them in midfield and they were pressing us high up the pitch. i think this Ipswich side is vastly superior to the one that we played at Bloomers earlier in the season, and in the second half we did much the same as we did previously in that we let them dictate the pace and constantly played square and long without a great deal of movement.

Gabriels limitations defensively were shown up again today, and like with Northampton we missed Gary Madine bullying their centre halves who genuinely didnt look very good. Thorniley was turned a dozen or more times, and we looked vulnerable to me on both of our wings. Stewrt looked tired at about 70 minute as did Dougall thought we might go all out with a front four - nothing to lose, Kaikai, Simms, Yates, and Mitchell up front with Virtue dropping a bit deeper maybe.

positives.
Thought Epki had a good game but he was trying to cover the whole of the Back line at times, without him in the second half it might have been a four or more goal loss.
thought Kaikai had a reasonable game. he doesnt seem to be playing with a great deal of confidence and he also seems to have lost a couple of yards of pace.
Virtue was popping up all over their box in the first half and hes the one player we have who can do that, and he was a bit lost on the wing.

Bad day at the office, get over it roll on Tuesday.

Good and sensible post.

Got to be honest I'm not sure that Critch has what it takes to be the top dog. I've supported and stood by him thus far but I think that he only knows ' the Liverpool way ' which, unfortunately as we've seen, isn't going to work at Blackpool as we don't have the finances and the quality of player that Liverpool have. There is no attacking urgency in our play and that is why we are losing games like today. As I alluded to on an earlier post on this thread, he needs to have a rethink and fast or the clock will start to tick.

And...we're not playing in Liverpool's league. Sometimes, threatening teams with a big man and a goal poacher does the trick at our level.

I didn't take a backwards step once, unfortunately went straight into the canal. Lesson learned.

You can take the piss out of McPhillips all you want but his season, with zero backing, took the job the day before it started, was better than this turgid stuff.
I can't disagree with that, but the players didn't seem interested today, so what does the coach do? It's not as if Ipswich were playing just to stop 'pool, it was an open game.

You wouldn't say that if we were top.

Anyway it's Ipswich away which means dropped points
Our position is totally irrelevant. If you look at all 4 divisions away teams are doing far better than normal when historically there are twice as many home than away wins but that certainly is not the case this season.

Final thought. We pressed hard in the first half and looked good. They pressed hard in the second half and knew how to finish. So long as that happens, we won't win games.
Nighty night all.

Dougall and Stewart aren't capable of pressing, they're limited footballers and injuries have taken their legs and fitness away.

It's been a few years since we've had some good old fashioned Saturday night verbals on AVFTT. Good to see a bit of passion! Thanks chaps 😜
I don’t know why some people take a different perspective so personally. It should be just like a few mates disagreeing in the pub, a load of raised voices and then ‘who’s round is it ‘ and all pals again.😀

Yet he set up to try and avoid defeat. We should pick our best team, play our own game and let them worry about us.
Exactly this, you would think he would have learnt his lesson by now. Two strikers up top works best so why are we changing this against mid table teams to try and be ‘smarter’ than them.

Dougall is great, but Covid probably does have an effect on fitness and sharpness especially in an elite athlete where margins make big differences. In hindsight putting him back in so soon may have been counter productive.

Today's performance has been coming for a couple of games. Before the goal deluge at the DW I said I had seen better from schoolboys on Stanley Park. The Northampton win was fortuitous to say the least. In the past few games our passing has been poor; far too much of the time we have had to deal with balls in the air rather than on the ground; players have given the impression of being rushed; players are not reading the game enough and the absence of running into free space has been distinctly lacking.
NC has to shoulder a lot of the blame. His tinkering with the team has meant players have not had a settled idea of what was required of them; Players have been forced to play out of position; NC has not reacted soon enough to tactical changes made by opposition managers; at times, the use of substitutes has been incomprehensible.
No doubt. these failing will eventually be ironed out but, for this season, I cannot see the team being more than also rans. Roll on next season!

I 100% agree mate. Out of order.

The simple fact was the second half was awful.

we couldn’t put two passes together, looked weary to me , limited desire, no attacking ideas, positional sense at the back went completely, no wing play and never looked like scoring .

we needed to sign a winger in the window and did not bother .. all in all very disappointing indeed.

I disagree with a lot of this and thought Gabriel and Marv had very good games and Virtue was awful (again)...Husband isnt good enough... Virtue is way too slow and not good enough it isnt working for Lubala..the manager had a stinker and needs to stop tinkering and get his best 11(or as close to it as he can) on the park week in week out
