I said it from the outset and I'll repeat it again, unless Southgate grows a pair and gets the system right we will fail in this tournament, having a system that has a back four and two defensive holding midfielders is a complete waste of time and will not get the best of the one area we are strong in, attacking midfielders. There is also a clear instruction from the manager to retain possession and not get the ball forward quick enough and this is shown by both full backs who constantly go back to their keeper and centre backs instead of forging down the flanks.
He needs to play three centre backs, that will release both full backs to get forward and use one holding midfielder which in turn will allow him to play three attacking midfielders who would be Foden, Mount and Grealish with Kane up top with the clear instruction to stay up top and not keep coming back in to midfield which is part of the reason why he looks knackered.
You don't become a bad player overnight, and Kane is a country mile ahead of our other strikers in terms of ability, but first and foremost he needs the service and employing two attacking wing backs and three attacking creative midfielders will give him that service.
Anyone who watched the Portugal v Germany game on Saturday will have seen how much both sides get forward and attack the opposition and the winner of this tournament will be a side like them or the likes of Belgium or France.
There is nothing wrong with the ability in this England squad, there is everything wrong with a manager who prepares for the tournament by playing pre tournament friendlies using players not even selected for the tournament, taking players who are clearly injured, employing negative defensive tactics to avoid defeat rather than win a game and giving players clear instructions not to take any risks and just try to retain possession at all costs.
When we exit this tournament the finger of blame will point accusingly at Southgate and he will only have himself to blame.
