Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson, Tony Currie, Matt LeTissier, Frank Worthington and to a lesser extent Glenn Hoddle.
It's an English trait not to play your most gifted flamboyant players in the international arena when everyone knows how good they are.
The last time we had a player that illuminated a game and had the nation on the edge of its seat like that we managed to reach the semi finals of both the world cup and euros in the 90's
I personally think that the likes of Foden, Grealish and Sancho will have to come to terms with being bit part players in a straight jacket of safety.
I agree but it does look very possible that by not playing our exciting players we'll at least equal that achievement.Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson, Tony Currie, Matt LeTissier, Frank Worthington and to a lesser extent Glenn Hoddle.

It's obviously difficult to argue as we won.I don’t understand this “Germany had chances and could’ve scored so Southgate must’ve made the wrong selection” viewpoint.
How often do we see a match where the opposition don’t get a chance to score?
Don't forget Shaw, I thought he was immense yesterday.I agree but it does look very possible that by not playing our exciting players we'll at least equal that achievement.
If it was up to me I'd pick ten Sullay's for Blackpool and ten Grealish's for England but it would be a shambles.
I think we're also a bit guilty of taking the players we do have for granted. Sterling isn't exactly unexciting, Saka is very gifted. Phillips played a few really nice balls yesterday. Certainly the midfield shield isn't exactly 'edge of the seat' but it's decent. People absolutely rave about Kante for example, but when we have an English player who bites and breaks up play it's 'boring'
We're not picking Carlton Palmer ahead of Le Tissier!
We aren't thrill a minute, but so far so good.
Simply you can't get them all in all of the time. His booking is also gone now which is good news, as he's a player who can bite into a tackle as well as make things happen. We've qualified and come past Germany without yet hitting top gear. Be quietly confident, we can do this.
Didn't know that. Doesn't make sense either as it means you could go out and get a free hit in the semi?Bookings get cleared after the quarter finals.
That’s exactly why they have done it, suspensions will roll over though if you get a second booking in the QF.Didn't know that. Doesn't make sense either as it means you could go out and get a free hit in the semi?
Spot on, I always thought two was unfair.Yep, changed so that players don't miss a final for a booking, only a red card.
They should up it to 3 cards aswell. 1 booking and you're on a tightrope, doesn't seem fair.
They're wiped out for the semis, it means the only way a player can miss the final is with a sending off, a yellow won't really matter at all. Both midfielders and Maguire are on yellow cards after last night so will have to be careful at the weekend
They can’t start for me.Both midfielders and Maguire are on yellow cards after last night so will have to be careful at the weekend
That’s not right, suspensions happen - but your card count is wiped for the semis. They're wiped out for the semis, it means the only way a player can miss the final is with a sending off.
Or are we talking about the same thing? That’s not right, suspensions happen - but your card count is wiped for the semis.
Hence another yellow on Sat and they are out.
Ah, I've read that wrong, it's only single cautions, so you can't pick up another yellow in the semi and get banned for the final, but you can get banned for the semis. That’s not right, suspensions happen - but your card count is wiped for the semis.
Hence another yellow on Dat and they are out.
That's how I understood it and something similar to why Foden was pulled from the third group game as they wanted to at least guarantee his availability against Germany with Mount having to self isolate all weekThat’s not right, suspensions happen - but your card count is wiped for the semis.
Hence another yellow on Sat and they are out.
Yep agree with that and to add the experience he is now showing too!Nobody mentioning Walker I see, I think he has been the most consistent player for us and seems to be getting quicker every game, within an inch of catching Muller, when he had his chance, the ground he made up was incredible!
Talk about play your cards right - I'm even more confused now! At least we won't face one of the truly shithousing get you booked for nothing kind of teams like Italy or Spain unless we go all the way. Care needed though all the same.
All true, though Kante has Pogba next to him, and Griezman and Mbappe up top.I agree but it does look very possible that by not playing our exciting players we'll at least equal that achievement.

no I don't think so. If up to and including the q/f you've only received ONE booking then it's wiped out. If you've already received one booking and then get booked in the q/f then you will be suspended for the semi final. It does seem daft to deny the best players being on show due to a booking in an earlier match and agree with the 3 card sentiment.
I don't quite get it either - so if they're on a yellow now, pick up another on Saturday, are they wiped for the semi-final?
In more ways than one. What diet is he on? The Wigan diet?Don't forget Shaw, I thought he was immense yesterday.
Sky sports ratings gave Shaw a 6? I must have watched a different game and Sterling a 9. Madness.Don't forget Shaw, I thought he was immense yesterday.

He's definitely a unit.In more ways than one. What diet is he on? The Wigan diet?
The way Mourinho treated Shaw by publicly shaming and criticising him was out of order. The fact that Shaw has bounced back and played so well is testament to his character. Also agree with the earlier comments about Walker, his pace when on the right side of the three compliments Stones and Maguire.Shaw has been excellent - it's been interesting reading the ongoing saga with him and The Special One - seems to have been a genuine dislike from Jose towards Shaw, which translated into Shaw having the worst form of his career and confidence being shot. Strange as you look at him now, pacey, attacking, can pick a pass, strong on the ball and has a barrel of a chest. Maybe scapegoated a bit at Utd or Jose just didn't man-manage him well at all.
