What’s happened with Phil Foden?

Gareth got something against his hair do? Seems strange the best player for us at the start of this tournament is sat on the bench?

Don’t get it, he’s by far the best player we have and will be for years to come. Talented, committed, skilful, energetic and fights for every ball. What’s not to like?

You could say the same about Sancho.

Not complaining as it's working but it could easily have been a German win as they had 3 very good chances - not exactly a good example of the tactics making us hard to beat.

Yeah Grealish is at the head of the queue to come in for me. I would leave Trippier out, although he did well yesterday, and probably Saka as well, which would make way for Foden and Grealish for me.

Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson, Tony Currie, Matt LeTissier, Frank Worthington and to a lesser extent Glenn Hoddle.
It's an English trait not to play your most gifted flamboyant players in the international arena when everyone knows how good they are.

The last time we had a player that illuminated a game and had the nation on the edge of its seat like that we managed to reach the semi finals of both the world cup and euros in the 90's

I personally think that the likes of Foden, Grealish and Sancho will have to come to terms with being bit part players in a straight jacket of safety.

When Revie was England manager he refused to sub Tony Currie in a friendly. Currie was asking him to come off as he had run out of puff. Revie said to his assistant coach “ No he’s not coming off. Let the lazy bugger stay on and suffer.”😀

I agree but it does look very possible that by not playing our exciting players we'll at least equal that achievement.

If it was up to me I'd pick ten Sullay's for Blackpool and ten Grealish's for England but it would be a shambles.

I think we're also a bit guilty of taking the players we do have for granted. Sterling isn't exactly unexciting, Saka is very gifted. Phillips played a few really nice balls yesterday. Certainly the midfield shield isn't exactly 'edge of the seat' but it's decent. People absolutely rave about Kante for example, but when we have an English player who bites and breaks up play it's 'boring'

We're not picking Carlton Palmer ahead of Le Tissier!

We aren't thrill a minute, but so far so good.

I don’t understand this “Germany had chances and could’ve scored so Southgate must’ve made the wrong selection” viewpoint.

How often do we see a match where the opposition don’t get a chance to score?
It's obviously difficult to argue as we won.

Personally I don't think it was the right tactic, I also think it was more luck than good management (plus 2 great saves from Pickford) that gave us the nil.

If that happens for the next 3 games I for one will be ecstatic.

Don't forget Shaw, I thought he was immense yesterday.

Foden has plenty of time, tournament football can change quickly with injuries and suspensions. At the moment the wide positions are covered with Sterling, Saka and Grealish ahead of him. I'm certain he can make a big impact before our tournament is over however.

I think what is clear is that there is no first eleven in Southgates eyes. He'll pick a team and formation based on who the opposition are. Is that the right thing to do. So far, clearly yes is the answer but then again by doing that he's worrying about the opposition which means that in cases like last night two or even three 'flair' players miss out.

Simply you can't get them all in all of the time. His booking is also gone now which is good news, as he's a player who can bite into a tackle as well as make things happen. We've qualified and come past Germany without yet hitting top gear. Be quietly confident, we can do this. 👍

Bookings get cleared after the quarter finals.

Rashford, Grealish, Stirling and Foden all prefer to play on the left even Saka is left footed so you either stick one of them on the right like Gareth has been doing or play one of them and put the only right footer in the side Sancho.

Didn't know that. Doesn't make sense either as it means you could go out and get a free hit in the semi?
That’s exactly why they have done it, suspensions will roll over though if you get a second booking in the QF.

There have been many finals that missed players because of it, hence why they changed it.

Both midfielders and Maguire are on yellow cards after last night so will have to be careful at the weekend
They're wiped out for the semis, it means the only way a player can miss the final is with a sending off, a yellow won't really matter at all.

That’s not right, suspensions happen - but your card count is wiped for the semis.

Hence another yellow on Dat and they are out.
Ah, I've read that wrong, it's only single cautions, so you can't pick up another yellow in the semi and get banned for the final, but you can get banned for the semis.

Cheers 👍

That's how I understood it and something similar to why Foden was pulled from the third group game as they wanted to at least guarantee his availability against Germany with Mount having to self isolate all week

Nobody mentioning Walker I see, I think he has been the most consistent player for us and seems to be getting quicker every game, within an inch of catching Muller, when he had his chance, the ground he made up was incredible!

Were saving him for the final :)
I think it is important to rotate players in a tournament like this to keep them fresh and to keep the opposition guessing on team selection, tactics and who could influence from the bench.
Overall, the only observation I would make is that we look much better when we play the game at a higher tempo and push forward in numbers higher up the pitch, rather than slowing the game with passes along the back

Talk about play your cards right - I'm even more confused now! At least we won't face one of the truly shithousing get you booked for nothing kind of teams like Italy or Spain unless we go all the way. Care needed though all the same.

I thought Foden was OK first couple of games but nothing more. He plays on the left for City so is missing out on his preferred slot. I'd play grealish left with sterling more central, I think sterling is bang average on the left but looked far better when grealish came on. So regarding the OP I think Southgate has got it right with foden.

Yep agree with that and to add the experience he is now showing too!

It does seem daft to deny the best players being on show due to a booking in an earlier match and agree with the 3 card sentiment.

I don't quite get it either - so if they're on a yellow now, pick up another on Saturday, are they wiped for the semi-final?

All true, though Kante has Pogba next to him, and Griezman and Mbappe up top.

Look where that got them. 🤣

It's a balance of talent and discipline innit. All summed up in Paul Pogba...

no I don't think so. If up to and including the q/f you've only received ONE booking then it's wiped out. If you've already received one booking and then get booked in the q/f then you will be suspended for the semi final.

Alan Shearer stated this morning that he thinks Southgate has got it spot on so far , & we have the strongest bench than anybody else , so keeping it tight for an hour & then introduce the talented forwards in the last 30 mins ….. he has a good point !

The frustrating part about last night were the positions we got into and the bottled the pass to the playmakers, the Germans were poor and could of been opened up many times especially in the first half 😫 The next match will have to be a keep the ball better and get behind it if lost , to overt the counter attack threat !

Shaw has been excellent - it's been interesting reading the ongoing saga with him and The Special One - seems to have been a genuine dislike from Jose towards Shaw, which translated into Shaw having the worst form of his career and confidence being shot. Strange as you look at him now, pacey, attacking, can pick a pass, strong on the ball and has a barrel of a chest. Maybe scapegoated a bit at Utd or Jose just didn't man-manage him well at all.

The way Mourinho treated Shaw by publicly shaming and criticising him was out of order. The fact that Shaw has bounced back and played so well is testament to his character. Also agree with the earlier comments about Walker, his pace when on the right side of the three compliments Stones and Maguire.
