Why do people have to say ‘rivalries aside’?

Sending condolences after someone has died is a basic gesture of human kindness.

Why do people always feel the need to declare that they’re putting rivalry aside in these situations? It shouldn’t matter anyway? Not letting sporting tribalism overcome basic empathy isnt anything to show off about, it should be a first instinct anyway.

Just say rest in peace.

R.I.P Trevor. I met him on several occasions and actually had a pub meal with him once. He was a real down to earth chap. I used to work with his son-in-law Geoff who was the Manager at the Tower for many years.

RIP Trevor. In the days where overseas investors buy clubs just for the sake of it and have no real interest or knowledge of the area, it’s so sad to lose someone who loved his club and did so much for the North West. He will be sadly missed. Condolences to his family, to Preston and its supporters and to the Horse Racing fraternity.
