How Not to Run a Football Club - Official Discussion Thread

Books were due today but now put back until next Monday. Just gone to see when the delivery is for another book and it's Saturday lol. Any idea when you can just pick up a copy from Waterstones? Might just cancel and read the spoilers on here 😉
Waterstones will have some in store any day now

I was co opted onto the BST committee in February 2015 when I became the spokesperson for the Trust. I banged the NAPM drum from the very start, which can hardly be described as late in the day!
We were advised to be very careful how we approached the whole boycotting issue for all the legal reasons suggested previously and yes, we called it an "ethical boycott" for a while. We were all learning as we went along and if there was even the slightest chance that the Trust could have faced legal action by officially calling for people not to spend any money in any Oyston businesses, that would have been irresponsible on our part.
Every time I spoke about the financial strategy that was NAPM/ethical boycott, I was speaking for the Trust. There is no way anyone who was paying attention could have thought we didn't support it!
We did not ask members to vote against it, we simply made the facts known and made it clear that they must make up their own minds (which is the right thing to do)
As time went on and it became clear that we were not at risk, we dropped the ethical boycott bit and went full NAPM.
Again, many of my later interviews stressed how some people had started NAPM much earlier than the majority of us but how it had grown wings and taken off. BST have never claimed it as our idea but we drove it for all it was worth, along with every other supporter group that backed it, especially once the two year season ticket deal had ended.
It's one of the most unique and courageous things a football community has ever done. Let's not fall out, eh?
Good to see you posting on here again Lady Seddon, you have got to be one of the cleverest and bravest lady football fans that I have ever met with the way you handled yourself when we thought you were going to face legal action.
I haven’t had my copy yet so am borrowing TAM’s to read on the plane to Rome later this week but I really hope you have several mentions in the book for those of us you supported and advised (not all of it that I obviously agreed with) as without you I don’t think several of the other sued fans would have got through the ordeals they went through. 👏👏👏👏👏😀

That's kind Mosser, thank you. We said at the time that one of the positives to come out of such a horrible situation was the camaraderie between Blackpool fans and how we all got to know many more people than before, people we would probably never have met or spoken with had it not been for the campaign. Those of you who were sued and threatened showed real courage and determination to stop it happening to anyone else, so well done right back at you!
This book really does bring it all back, enjoy the read as it's a cracker. 👍

I was at a few of the early BST meetings and this is pretty much how I remember it, think it‘s time to draw a line under who supported/instigated NAPM/ethical boycott now and focus on what so far (I’m up to page 58) is a great read! Thousands made sacrifices of varying levels during the boycott and ultimately were rewarded with a famous victory over the ‘Stains! The club‘s in a great place now; we’re all back and the place is rocking on a match day! Awesome! For a long time I didn’t think that would happen.
Was definitely me, my lads and my dad who pioneered NAPM though, May 2014 Blackpool 0-3 Charlton, line drawn-😂

Don’t you start nitpicking!!

The importance of the ‘detail’ is affected by perspective of the individual. And the smallest of details can be important.

What I see evidence of here is a total lack of emotional intelligence and a brash disregard for how those ‘small details’ might affect others.

It sucks 👎

Bifster. I sometimes wonder if different people post under your username.
I do agree completely with you when you say that "detail" is affected by the perspective of the individual.
As far as this book is concerned I already knew most of the generalities and was more than happy to accept the read on that basis. I'm just not anal about it.
No insult intended. 👍

Will do, thanks……. hopefully catch up soon 😀

It certainly reminded me very strongly of how important 2017 and 2018 were. The court case was a bit of a gift, but it still had to be exploited. And that long run up to Receivership was very frustrating, but was when critical mass started to develop. Not that it felt like that at the time, particularly.

I thought Nathan did a good job on setting out the genuine schism that developed between Owen and Karl - more like a chasm, by the end. And also he conveys how much different stuff went on over a long period ; some of it highly orchestrated, some not.

There is probably another book in the struggle with the EFL, if anyone can be bothered to write it.

I'm not really sure my initial comments were particularly anal. If you go back and check, I described them as "minor inaccuracies" Insy. Yep, there's been a subsequent discussion around that comment and I've expanded on the point. I don't think it detracts from the book, if anything I just feel a bit puzzled as to why certain things weren't corrected. It's just very odd

Probably a bridge too far.... Maybe a book on "The History of Magnolia Paint" might gain more traction😉

It's because it's a matter of perspective and opinion, which some will see differently. But you can't cater to everyone. You didn't see BST as a driving force, but I do. And, well, it's my book, so any editorialising will reflect my view to a certain point, although most of it was intentionally written with some distance. I'm entirely comfortable with how that line is written. I don't really have much more to say on the matter, at some point you have to accept people have different opinions.

That's a fair point foggy, I was just explaining where I am coming from to insider really. I didn't expect you to justify yourself again to be perfectly honest. 👍

It's cracked the top 200 a couple of days ago, which is utterly surreal. When you consider there's children's books, recipe books, self help guides which the author usually buys a ton of copies themselves for trade shows, celeb autobiographies etc. Its basically made 'the best of the rest' in my view, which is the best I could ever have hoped for

Thank you everyone for buying, and for all the kind words.

Gotcha, sorry I thought the last line about corrections was aimed at me
Think it was aimed at me 🤣

For the record ( as I’m sure you’ll confirm ) my proof-reading was focused on timeline accuracy not editing the narrative

And congrats on the sales !

I just think it's a shame that Fog's hadn't attributed allegedly nicking the SISA collection bucket to you...

I'm sure that would have flown through the proof-reading process🤣

Just back (via el pub) after picking up my copy from the P/O. Off under the bedclothes now with torch and some tuck, gosh looking forward to this! Night night.😀

Just realised, there is nothing about the meeting with Owen at the Hilton Hotel. Interviewed by Tim. Owen coming in (and out) surrounded by bodyguards amused me. Who was that who spoke and said what a wonderful person Owen was. Granddaughter or daughter? Seems ages ago now.

@foggy.
I've just read the Court Case chapter and can I compliment you on an excellent piece of descriptive and informative writing which at the same time makes me smile and captures the mood and camaraderie of the fans in the Courtroom. I was lucky enough to be there on the days when the Oystons and their team were giving evidence and reading it again today sends a little shiver down my spine (to go with grit in my eye at Brett's testimonial, which I'm pleased you didn't mention 😉) because that was the day I knew that "football was coming home.
Not much more to read know before I'm NAPM again. (Not A Page More)
Well done that man. 👍 👍 👍
I like the line, “Eventually, they [the fans] got their moment to watch Karl step up to the witness box. The court could have charged for popcorn.” 😂

I relistened to the audio during writing, Tim read through a draft and said a couple of times I should include it, but to me there wasn't really anything of note. I found it an incredibly frustrating listen, with Owen trying to tell his usual story of saving the club, interrupted every couple of minutes by members in the audience, who kept shouting out. While I applaud the effort from those involved, speaking from a journalistic sense, open forums such as those never get you anywhere. A one on one interview is always way better. Same with politics. I'd rather see a well-prepared journalist drilling each candidate in a one on one interview, rather than those 'debates' where 5 politicians at once are shouting over each other trying to get their soundbites in.

Yes, you are right Foggy. Nothing came out of that meeting. It was good that BST managed to get Owen to the table but It wasn’t a game changer. Allowed fans to spout off.

Still sore after my operation today , but back home about 6:30 & rather groggy 🥴 however I’ve managed a respectable 96 pages up to now. My conclusions so far, it’s incredible we got to the Prem (talk about hamstrung) my knowledge about everything being done on the cheap was correct, but not at that level Jesus wept, lastly K O was even more horrible than I could have imagined & I certainly didn’t hold him in high esteem. Think I’d better go to bed soon as the Mrs will think I’ve expired down here. But it’s very hard to put down. So far I can only say well done to Foggy for documenting this truly unbelievable chain of events, looking forward to the comeuppance part of this saga, it’ll give me something to take my mind off other things. 👍

I think the interactions with OO wee probably a bit of a mistake to be honest.
I think the amount of people who were there show it wasnt a mistake. BST is a fans organisation and its what many fans wanted. I dont think it achieved anything, but not doing it doesn't achieve anything either, you know? Worst way of looking at it is fans got a chance to vent their frustrations and that's no great bad thing. If anything, maybe it helped OO realise his view that a few wins would get the fans back was a delusion. I doubt he saw it that way though. It just wasn't worthy of inclusion in the book imo, and achieved little in the grandscheme of things. But even if you got Jeremy Paxman himself in the ring with him for an hour, that would have hardly changed anything either, in fairness.

Glad to hear everything went well Sooty. Get some rest! The tale of villainy will still be there for you tomorrow.
