No Sonny Carey thread?

The classic 'we don't move enough' vs 'why is Sonny trying to look for space' argument.

'Hiding' ffs.

I think some of you won't be happy till we've got 10 outfield players rushing after the ball and brawling and hacking to get it, like it's 1872.
Oh dear. It seems my positive opinion of you was somewhat misplaced. Surely we can disagree on the merits of Carey without you resorting to ridiculous suggestions about the style of football I enjoy.

Having watched Pool play in all 4 divisions more than once, for me, a huge difference between levels is the awareness and speed of thought of good players, to add to any technical skill they may possess.

Carey looked like he'd be better off in the Peter Pan 11 earlier this season.

We haven't got any particularly good players unfortunately, only man in the squad who's agent will be busy this summer is Dembele.
Sign of a good Blackpool player for me is when you think there is a strong possibility that we will receive an offer we can't refuse, or sometimes we should but we still accept them!!
My guess is not one bid will come in for any player contracted to Blackpool this summer and any that are free agents will move sideways or downwards. This includes Carey.

Come now, surely you know by now that I always have one player who is beyond critique!

I would agree that he had a spell (a short spell fwiw) earlier this season when he looked lost. He hasn't played like that for months though and what I've seen of late (both in this spell and his earlier spell before Morgan (who I agree is a very good player and probably ahead of Sonny if you're only picking one of them)) took his place) has been a player who has wanted the ball and looked to do something with it and actually created most of what we've done in the last three games.

Earlier in the year I think he'd really lost a sense of what he was there to do - which, to be honest, after being played at 21 in the championship as a defensive midfielder with Patino for company the season before was probably not a great surprise. I think it's taken him some time to find his game again - some experienced players - Connolly for example, Marvin perhaps as another to an extent (though he's playing well now) have had similar crisis of confidence.

Like any player, there is a level of uncertainty about how good they actually are - but having also watched us in all 4 divisions (though sadly, only the lower leagues multiple times) I rate Carey as he has a certain quality to him that I think is quite elusive. I've gone through it above. Sometimes he doesn't always execute his skills perfectly, but my god, I'd rather he tried to be that player instead of trying to be an identikit midfielder.

I generally like players who are a bit idiosycratic - who don't always fit the mould of their position or whatever, so perhaps it's that to an extent but none the less, I think he's a positive force and if we're to have future as a club as a moulder and developer of young players then Carey is absolutely vital to persist with.

What I really dislike is that he's become a sort of symbol for 'what is wrong' and I think that's really unfair because I don't think he's 'what is wrong' at all. I think he's a player that for whatever reason it is, some have taken against. Similar in a way to how every flippin' week on here there was a 'Kaikai is the problem' thread.

I'm only teasing with the 1872 stuff, just as I'm only teasing with the Neil Bishop stuff. I actually like players like Bishop. You need a bit of all sorts to make a good team and the Bishps and the Careys need to be moulded into a whole effectively by a manager.

8 actually. The early set up was one goalkeeper, one deep defender, one midfielder and eight forwards, whose job it was to chase the ball upfield, where they would be met by the opposition eight forwards. Each side would link arms and lean (upright) into a scrimmage where the tactic was to kick the opposition shins in the hope that this would 'break' the opposition, releasing the ball into open play.

Think about the development of Rugby Union: 8 forwards linking in a scrummage or a ruck in an effort to release the ball into open play. That game has also retained one deep lying full-back, and the same off-side rule as football originally had.

See, I think that's partly about how we play. Critchley is cautious. He doesn't believe 'ok, we'll get another goal' - he thinks 'fine margins, keep it tight' and so on.

Peterborough are prone to lose the odd game quite badly. They're also prone to smash teams. You could really see when we played them (pk, be fair, we won one of those games) that they didn't worry at missing a chance or turning over possession. They believed deep down that they could just make another chance - and in all three games, the had long spells where they were excellent and just created opening after opening after opening.

I think Carey, Morgan, Joseph and a few other players (even Lavery to a degree) we have are those kind of players potentially. They would thrive in a forward thinking team. Byers too perhaps. Coulson I could see being decent thus.

I listened to Critchley before the game. Andy Bayes said 'how do you score more goals?' and Critchley said 'shooting boots, better finishing' and I thought... Neil... what about 'make more chances?' - it just seems to sum him up, he talks about 'quality in key moments' as the problem as if the system and process is unimpeachable.

WE'RE A LEAGUE ONE TEAM ON A LEAGUE 1 BUDGET.

The 'quality in key moments' is never going to be perfect, 100% clinical etc. If we want more goals, we need to make more chances and we're quite midtable in terms of the chances we've made. I'm getting tired of that 'it's the players not doing it perfectly that is the only problem' subtext.
"it's the players not doing it perfectly that is the only problem."

That is the key point in your post. We seem to need to score goals as they've been trained. It takes up time doing it and we aren't good enough to do it consistently. I'm not even a fan of it when it does work. I just wish we had the freedom to think... Advance to the edge of the box. If space opens up, belt the f*cker!

Has it taken 42 games for Critchley to realise he is our best midfielder and for Sonny to actually gain some confidence.
Apparent as soon as Morgan and Norburn came in and as much as I like Virtue he'll never change games.
Be interesting to see the released list and then we'll know what he really thinks of him!
