A sliver of positivity

I woke up this morning quite optimistic

We all knew in our heart of hearts that Josh would go and good luck to him - he's been a joy to watch over the last 12+ months

The money side of things in the Premier is seismic and when the call comes it's difficult to resist as it sets you up for life

At the end of the day whether we get £4m or £6m it's good business for BFC and just the type of approach we should be taking - take a chance on a young player with pedigree, give him playing time, sell for a profit and reinvest - ' the Brentford model ' if you will

To survive in this crazy league we have always known we can't compete financially with ' the big boys ' rather we need to box clever between spending money on young talent and then augmenting that with experienced pro's and a smattering of good quality loans

The acquisition of Callum Wright is looking particularly astute based on the ' gnashing of teeth' that's emanating from the East Midland this morning whilst Zak Emmerson appears to have great potential.

I suspect we missed out on one or two we'd have ideally wanted but that's the same for most other teams

As I said yesterday I am really looking forward to seeing Poveda get a run of games coupled as he looked very exciting to watch in his 10 min cameo whilst we have Arsenal's ' next big thing ' in Patino to bed in, two young full backs who love to get forward and a reasonably solid and experienced spine to provide the youngsters with the support they need

If we are ' missing ' anything I'd say it's an out and out goalscorer however they are at a premium

I suspect we will take a few beatings this season however I believe we have the depth of talent to hold our own whilst the team are far better on the eye than under Critchley and so it should be a fun ride - which is what football is all about

We as fans need to stick with this team and continue to provide the incredible unconditional support we saw last year at the likes of WBA etc

I've woke up alot more positive. Disappointing to lose Bowler, but we all knew it was going to happen. The fact we didn't get time to spend the money sucks however I do like the look of Wright. From the highlights I've watched and yes I know that highlights can make anyone look good but add that to what the Leicester and Cheltenham fans have been saying about him, he could be a serious gem. It's gonna be a tough season, but we will all be there backing the lads.

Completely agree and I am not sure why there has been such a meltdown immediately after the window shut.

Bowler leaving was inevitable. We all knew it and Appleton to his credit brought in Poveda as a replacement but we also have Corbeanu who has been excellent.

The general consensus was we needed another midfield player and we managed to get the highly regarded Callum Wright in to supplement the squad and we already have Patino, Fiorini and Carey to come back. Virtue was never going to be playing many minutes so got a good move.

Keepers seem ok.

Defensively I would have liked us to keep Casey at the club but I rate Williams and so did Klopp sufficiently to trust him in the Liverpool team for several games. Marv and he can build a decent partnership imo.

I confess I am still worried about the strikers. Lavery is woefully out of form goal scoring wise and Jerry not a lot better. Gary goals is clearly not able to play 90 mins anymore and never has been prolific. Beesley could be our best hope. I am pleased about Emmerson though and I feel he could do a job for us.

We may go down if things go against us but there is no reason why we could not mount a decent campaign with this squad. Let’s try and remember it is still only September and the team will improve over the next few months.

yep, good post TAM. I've already made enough posts on Bowler so I'm not gonna go down that route here. For me, we're now stepping into this transition period so somewhat into the unknown. Lot's of "promising" youngsters have come in either on loan or as permanent transfers and cutting straight to the point most of them need to step up pretty much immediately to ensure that we stay in this division. So a lot of pressure on young heads. I hope they are ready for the challenge. If they are then it could be exciting times ahead.

.. but we have £5 million in the bank and yet a decent goalscorer, who were were after, goes to Blackburn who keep their goalscorer!
the problem here is that signing an expensive striker will mean we have to substantially break the wage structure in place.

more than a sliver..
comparing players in to players out, we have a much better squad than 12 months ago.
it's now up to MA to get the full potential out of this very talented set of lads.
Don't hold back MA, use their ability.

Good to be positive. 👍

Wright, Emmerson and Poveda all cost money. Money spent doesn't neatly match money earned. Money comes in at irregular intervals and you spend it when you find the items you want at the right price. And we signed Bowler for nothing. He cost nothing. Except his wages. Dong forget wages. Lingard was a free transfer. But 10m in wages for one season.

I can't really understand what all the gnashing of teeth is about, Bowler was always going to go, he wanted to go! It appears we got a decent price for him, considering the time left on his contract, he got what he wanted and to an extent, so did we.
We seem to have some exciting loan players, a new permanent mid-fielder, a decent new left back and yet still we see, "we're going down", "nailed on for relegation" Really? What do some people expect? I've already seen a couple of uses for the ignore button this morning!

We were never, ever, going to go out and spend 2M plus on a 20 goal a season striker, even if we could find one.

It's time to stop the moaning and groaning and do what we're best at

I agree with the optimism. For whatever reason we have a plague of message writers (I won't call them fans) who like to put a negative slant on anything and everything to do with our club. I suspect there is an element who are a mixture of non Blackpool fans, people very sad and bitter about their own lives, Oystonites or just of low intelligence.
Critchley who was clearly starting to be found out left us with a squad containing too many injury prone players on long term contracts, and a number not quite good enough for the Championship. Appleton who I did not want has done well with what he has inherited, got rid of some of the lessor players, brought in what appear to be some excellent loan signings and we appear to have also brought late in the window one or two players of real potential.
Mansford and co also got an excellent price for Bowler if the £4m plus is to be believed. For a player with only 10 months left on his contract and who was not going to sign another it was a great piece of negotiating. I like Bowler but I am not sure he will make it in the Prem.
All in all we are in the early stages of the next phase of our player development. A new head coach, a big turnaround in players and funds in the bank to spend as appropriate. I think we will stay up and indeed have a good second half to the season when we have loan and contracted players returning fit from injury.

Spot on TAM. I feel quite positive about things. We’ve certainly got a stronger team than last season.

I have also woken this morning feeling more optimistic. Encouraging to hear Leicester and Brighton fans unhappy at losing such talent.

On the whole it is not too bad ,plus all the injured players we have coming back . I would have loved another experienced centre back though.

Anderson and Beesley to come back at some point. Anderson would be good for us now, Beesley the jury is still out on but he looked decent from the few games he played last season. Haven't heard an update on when either will be back. Bonkers really when Anderson at one point last season was our star man.

It'll be interesting to see if Appleton is willing to give Beesley a chance. He looked more of a goal threat than Wor Gaz in the few appearances he had last year, but without the physical presence and intelligence.

Good point about Keshi as well. No clue when he's due back but we could use him.

Poveda in his brief appearance showed he could fill Bowler's role. Corbeanu should hopefully start featuring on the opposite wing more regularly.

Anderson, Fiorini and Patini all returning at some point.

Our creativity isn't completely ruined with the departure of Josh Bowler when you think about that. Then with the money from his transfer, hopefully we crack on in January and secure some permanent transfers as 4 out of the 5 players mentioned there are all loans!

We will be fine I reckon. I dont disagree that it's been a poor window, but our squad certainly isn't the relegation-bound disaster some are making out.

Jury is still out on everybody, from the boardroom, to the coaching staff and the players. There’s no denying that this transfer window has been shambolic. If we don’t pick up a win soon what confidence the players have will drain away and the negativity will only grow further... let’s see how committed the loan lads are if we do take a few beatings...very easy to give up knowing whatever happens you won’t be here next season.
Poveda looked absolutely tremendous lightening quick
so is CJ

I’m pretty happy with the squad we have. Less happy about injuries but pray that improves quickly! I think Wright looks to be a good signing but obviously time will tell.

Bowler, he was always going to go as some have said, but good as he is, we were not a one man team, we’re hard working and resilient and looks like we have talent in Poveda, Patino, Wright, Carey, Fiorini etc who can hopefully really come on now.

I think we should have signed Bishop, but that’s how it goes. Generally I think we’ve a good chance of progressing with this squad.

We may have a better calibre of player (apart from in the forward line)
But one thing we don't have is the experience and players who can guide the youngsters
And next summer we will be behind the black ball again because
Few of the talented players are actually ours

I have also woken this morning feeling more optimistic. Encouraging to hear Leicester and Brighton fans unhappy at losing such talent.
All the Olympiacos fans saying they're happy hearing the Blackpool fans are unhappy at Bowler going 😁

Personally I think that we have had a good window.
Sold Bowler at his peak price (that we could have got), invested in a couple of youngsters with great potential and probably walk away with a pocket full of change. The fact that Bowler is going on loan to the Greek league tells you what NF actually think of his PL potential - he is a makeweight in the financial fair play wrangling that NF must adhere to. He walks away richer but diminished in my eyes, the Greek league is a lower level than the Championship. Good luck to him.
Anyway for us, this is how we have to operate. Buy low sell high, in this way we gradually manoeuvre into a better and better team with more resources. Appleton is a great coach for the youngsters, I expect us to survive comfortably this season and play some exciting football.

Can’t disagree with any of that. Unfortunately we do have a small number of negative bedwetters who can’t see pass their own noses but fortunately the vast majority on here just ignore them for what they are. Turning to Critchley and I’ve said many times on here now he would have been found wanting this season as a championship team manager and the cracks were beginning to show in the final 10 games of last season, but he also gave us some great times as well. Im confident that when we get the injured players back we’ll be a decent team just a real shame that Stewart is such an injury prone player as he’s exactly we need in CDM.

Great post. Spot on. Couldn't agree more.

As I've said on another thread, hopefully the forwards we've got will get more service with a midfield that's got a more attacking mind, leaving Dougall etc to do the spade work. More goals from midfield would be good too.
I'm positive today too - Appleton clearly likes to go for promising youth and an attacking mindset and hopefully with our full squad, things will click.
Within the parameters that Simon Sadler has set, I think we'll be alright this season.

the problem here is that signing an expensive striker will mean we have to substantially break the wage structure in place.
I'm going to be optimistic and suggest that the strikers we have got may come good over the season if they get the service from the creative midfielders once they are back and we have the young lad poveda. And I also think corbeanu hasn't had the credit he deserves I think he has real promise and already two goals. I still think our mistake was not bringing those two on early enough on Tuesday. Bowler is gone long live the 'pool
