Andy Lyons

Lyons has to earn the shirt back. I know there's underlying reasons for his performances but he's not been especially good this year at any point (understandably) and CJ, Thommo and Dale are all currently playing well and contributing when they've played.

I hope Lyons gets his chance and shines but I don't think he's an automatic pick. Certainly if Callum Connolly was still doing his wing wizardry, I'd be screaming for him, but the 3 who are sharing those shirts of late have done well.

I also am not totally sold on Lyons defensively.

CJ is currently undroppable in that RWB position. The LWB position is a little bit more up for grabs but Dale is probably the go to option in certain games and Thompson has put in a couple of good performances in so he has his work cut out there too. Not to mention Gabriel will soon be back adding more competition to the RWB position.

Great problem to have though and it’s a long season where we’ll no doubt pick up injuries and players will drop in and out of form so he’ll get a chance at some point. At the start of the season I’d have had him as our best wing back so I’d expect to play a real part this season, he’ll just have to be patient for now though.

I’d like to see Gabriel compete for that RCB role a bit similar to Kyle Walker. He’s big and has pace although he does need work in defensive positioning.

That would be a real statement if he was RCB and Hubby LCB with their ability to double up on the wings and overload.

Not for me. Would be chaotic. We have better players for the back 3 slots in my opinion.

I wonder if Lyons could do a job on the left or right side of the flat midfield 3. Negates his perceived lack of defensive instinct and free him up to get up and down the pitch with less responsibility.

He's also proven to be direct and good at timing his runs and getting in the box, can also help create overloads with the wing back on his side, with his ability to go infield or down the touchline.

Dale starting as LWB and Lyons at LCM means he can overlap Dale when Dale comes in on his right foot.

Normally wary about suggesting full backs move to centre mid, but this is a wing back moving slightly into the adjacent half space.

pullet header/headless pullet.

I told you wordz are phun
They are… mid match, upon hearing part of a shout about being in a ‘secret closet’, we had a family discussion as to the phrase being tautologous. We then resumed the normal ‘ref, have you got cataracts?’ Type stuff…

I’d personally start with Thompson and Lyons as wing backs if we are to play this rubbish system bring hamilton and dale late on. Or just play a formation that plays to our strengths preferably.

I know its tongue in cheek, but I never expected to see 'Callum Connolly' and 'wing wizardry' mentioned in the same sentence.😯

Gabriel is also quite good in the air, this could be a possibility.

The formation is playing to our strengths, we have only lost 3 games and we are in the top 6.
It allows us to put plenty of bodies in midfield and play 2 up front.
It also has a large degree of flexibility.
What would you change it to in order to play to the strengths that you think are being neglected?

Lyon’s was a stand out player last season and I’d have no probs sticking him straight back in down either side. Maybe right side of midfield to get forward and supply the strikers or to join them at times. I think he got 5 goals n for a defender over part a season that is superb.

Lyons should be a cast iron starter but his best position in 5-3-2 is RWB and you can't bench CJ for him. If he does come in it will probably be LWB and I think he would shine there. A curve ball perhaps but could he play as the right centre-back in preference to Pennington ?

Why not move CJ to the left?
