Appleton appreciation post

Did a proper job on the nobbers, considering the week we have had and the current injuries that could have been a difficult afternoon

Tactically spot on against a team that press high

Playing CJ was a master stroke as was Husband at left back as some of his balls down the line were brilliant

CJ isn't for everyone and I've been a critic of him, but yesterday he was brilliant and we played him the perfect way, getting balls over the top turning them around and having his pace to run on into the gaps

Can't play to his feet so have to play him this way, it was brilliant to see him use his pace to exploit the gaps

Appleton and his staff obviously did their homework on the nobbers and that was a tactical masterplan

Cj was probably motm for me

Well done Apples...

Schooled Lowe yesterday. Did a number on him. Let's get a bit more consistency now please.
Yep he did mate

Proper job on them, i actually thought they had more of the ball (not seen the stats) but every time we broke we looked really dangerous and CJ was key to this

Think they play a back 3 so we played 3 high and it worked a treat even though we were outnumbered in central midfield

They had more of the ball but bar one or two moments, generally our mistakes did they look dangerous. We scored an own goal and gave them a penalty. They are poor.

CJ was fantastic yesterday and I wish we saw more of that from him.

When you have the injury list like ours and off the back of a really poor defeat, that's when managers earn their money and it was a tick in the box for MA yesterday. For a team like theirs that don't concede goals, I thought we were properly able to exploit their weaknesses. It must've raised a few eyebrows starting CJ but it was a great call. The through ball from Carey for CJ just prior to our third was exactly the type of pass that CJ needs, and that he's been starved of. More of that please.

Yep 100% agree. Best game for CJ since we’ve been in the Championship by some distance. It’s a squad game and I agree MA got it just right yesterday. 👏

Said on another thread. The way we set up played to CJ’s strengths and it’s great that he flourished because of that. Jerry and the Gazzo will always allow you to pull their line in towards the halfway line and then New Charlie has the passing range to exploit the space behind and CJ the pace to stretch the oppo out. Will be interesting to see if we can achieve that on a regular basis or whether it was just about horses for courses.

I know Madine put himself about and made the first goal for Jerry but i would like a more mobile central striker

Madine looked knackered

Agree about Yates wide as well he just doesn't stop

Thought CJ, Jerry, Patino were magnificent

Also Dougall and Carey had good games with and without the ball and Husband was solid given he's not played any football

I don’t think he’s getting enough credit for moving Yates wide which now has him on 8 goals. Top stuff.

Appleton v Lowe tactically is a non-contest 🤣💪🏽
Absolutely.

I think we can firmly stop saying 'Jerry is not a winger'

We can say 'As a wide forward, Jerry is reborn and is playing at level that we've not seen Blackpool forward play at in a decade'
The energy of the man. Against Sheff Utd he tackled back and nearly won the game by starting a move with CJ on the end. Yesterday he did the same and it came off. The hardest working player, still fighting in the 95th and 98th minutes, in his own box after two of the most combative games we've seen in years - his all round play doesn't get enough credit and Appleton has found a place where he's so much more than a striker.

By 'knackered' I'll assume you mean 'the pinnacle of footballing standards that most can only aspire to' and let it pass. 🤣

Last season he would have been off between 60 and 70 minutes, assuming he started at all. Rotation bollocks. He's clearly a player who thrives on playing.

Where were you yesterday ?

CJ MOM also for me and my mate.

What I like about Appleton and his team of coaches that they are tactically astute in their game management they see things quickly and ain't afraid to change things.
Sometimes it comes off and with a stronger bench when players coming back can only be a positive.

Just get behind the bloke FFS he's doing a great job.

Diagonal balls and starting CJ to turn their defence, brilliant. Playing Patino further forward and Dougall deeper suited us too.
Fair play to Carey, he came in and looked to get forward and hurt them, which he did.
As for Jerry, first half felt like him and Gaz played too far apart, but both put in a real shift and we got the rewards.
Credit to Appleton for doing his homework and not setting us up just not to get beat👍
Edit to add, my 12 year old lad loved it.

All about consistency now...they have shown they can do it a few times this season most notably in the 3-3 draws, Watford and knob end. They cannot afford any more of the Hull Rotherham Barrow and Millwall performances. Yesterday was a massive game for Appleton and to be fair he more than exceeded expectation. Yesterday was also a coming of age for CJ, Patino and in particular Carey. Let's hope they can all kick on from here

To be honest i still dont think Appleton has managed to play his best team we have been hindered with injuries all season so i can excuse a couple or poor performances

Rotherham and Hull were poor thats about it all the rest of the matches were close

We all thought the same. Anyone who says different is lying.
I was surprised to see CJ start, but as I've previously said, play him in his right position, tell him exactly what you want him to do (applies to others as well), play to his strengths and you'll get a good performance.

He's never a 46 game starter in a year of Sundays, but certain games he'll thrive and should play. Credit to MA for playing him correctly in a game instead of wide right where he is nullified, at best.

The team needs to back that up with a good performance at Cov. Will CJ start? 50/50.

I’ve not been CH’a biggest fan but yesterday he was immense. The difference now is that we have Patino who can see a pass for him to run on to. Quite a few players have improved under Appleton which is down to his coaching.

I'd have to agree, Jerry has been transformed the last few games and I think that's down to Appleton and his coaching staff. It's taken a few games, but the improvement is there for all to see. Also the players know that under Appleton if they play well they are more than likely to start the next game, which breeds confidence. Under Critch you could score a hatrick and still get dropped.

got to say this. After the game, got in the car and had Talk Sport on. They were going thru the results of games already played and when they got to us they said that Appleton had been a guest on the show previous evening and said that anyone who thought Blackpool weren't in a relegation fight at the start of the season was deluded. I thought what the fuck, how can he come out with that shiite. We finished last season with 60 points and were never really close to the relegation zone once the season was a few games under way. Made me think how would the players feel if they heard that? Never really anything but positive things to say about him but he certainly went down a bit in my estimation. Anyone else hear it?

He's a pragmatist I suppose, we'd all just be happy to stay up this season let's face it, anything else is a bonus.

Look at this way, Lowe (with the help of his board) massively inflated Preston's expectations in the summer and look how that's going for them.

he might think it but he shouldn't say it. Certainly won't get the fans on side and also that the players aren't good enough for anything better.

He also said that we massively overachieved last season so he's set his stall out right there which I don't mind to be honest considering everything that's gone on but fair play to him yesterday as he managed to replicate Critchley's two goal winning margin from last season against PNE

well i never heard the interview so don't know what was said but even so, saying we massively over achieved is still decrying the players abilities. Surely, he should be bigging them up not putting them down. Anyway, we beat the nobbers so credit to him and the players for that.

Whether he was my choice or not I've always wanted him to do well, because if he does well, so does our team. We seem to be seeing an improvement so well done to all. That's with a horrendous amount of injuries too

That's why I didn't want to bawl him out after Rotherham cos he stuck with a side who'd got a good 3 points at Huddersfield and not tinkered - it didn't work, but he's obviously trying to build that confidence that he'll reward players for doing the job.

My beef with Appleton was when he played 5-4-1 against Rotherham which went horribly wrong and then he did the same mistake away at Millwall.

Hopefully it’s just part of the learning process.

Yeah, Millwall was a game too far, but also, to be fair to him around those games, there was a horrible lack of midfield players. It was one game too far for something that never really worked especially well/pretty badly, I agree.
